Walter Wiggins officiating. Mr. Nicol had suffered with arthritis for the past several years. He had an attack of the flu about four weeks ago, which developed into pneumonia and caused his death on Saturday, May 2, at noon. John Nicol was born at Motherwell, Scotland, on January 1, 1866, the son of Andrew and Mary Devine Nicol, and was past 76 years of age at the time of his death. When he was five years old the family moved to America, settling at Lonaconing, Maryland, where he grew to maturity. He was united in marriage to Catherine Hausman at Lonaconing on October 30, 1891, and they lived in Maryland until 33 years ago, when they came to the Eden Valley community and settled on the farm southwest of the village. They observed their golden wedding anniversary last Octyober. Ten children were born to the couple. Two daughters preceded their father in death. Surviving with the mother are six daughters and two sons: Mrs. William (Edith) Hall of Nashua, Iowa; Mrs. Robert (Annie) Conway of Dexter, Minnesota; Mrs. Bennett (Marion) Smtith of Skyberg; Mrs. Lee (Verna) Larick of Austin; Mrs. William (Maryellen) Vogelpohl of Litchfield; Mrs. Ralph (Ruth) Driver, at home; Melvin Nicol of Eagle Grove, Iowa; and James Nicol of Eden Valley. There are 22 grand children and three great grand children. One sister and two brothers live in Maryland. Honorary pall bearers were John Wendroth, August Holtz, William Cashman, Elmer Parsons, Ed Summers and Alfred Hagelbeck. Active pall bearers were Herman, Engelhard, Elmer, Fred, Arthur and Theodore Wendroth.
