Samuel Nichols died at his home on East Main Street at 11 p.m. Monday. Mr. Nichols had been on poor health for several years having contracted disabilities in the army from which he never fully recovered. He served in “A” Company, 2nd Maryland Infantry a full term of three years. He was a native of Scotland, coming to this country before the Civil War. Mr. Nichols was married in Lonaconing in 1849 to Grace Laird, who survives him, as does also three sons, Archibald and Lindley, of Lonaconing, and Clarence, who is somewhere in Alaska. He leaves two brothers and a sister, John Nichols, of Lonaconing, and Benjamin, of Gardner, Kan., and Mrs. Elizabeth Morgan, of New Haven, Pa. Mr. Nichols was in his 69th year and had resided in Lonaconing since coming to this country, save for two brief periods. He lived in Jeanette, Pa., a short time and spent a year or so in Colorado. The funeral took place this afternoon, Georges Creek Valley Lodge, A.F. & A.M., of which decease was a member, having charge. McPherson Post G.A.R. paid the soldier’s last sad tribute to their departed comrade.
