Mr. O'Brien enlisted in the Third Maryland Regiment Potomac Home Brigade, and served as a private in Company A. He was, with his comrades, surrendered by General Miles to Confederate General Hill at Harper's Ferry, and afterward paroled. While at Parole Camp at Annapolis, he had a paralytic stroke from which he never fully recovered, and was never able to afterwards do manual labor. He was receiving a pension from the government.
