The Rephann Family The Rephann Family was a very large family who lived primarily in the Eckhart region of Allegany County, MD. The Rephann name is also recorded as being spelled Rephorn. A clear explanation as to why the name change came about is unknown. Some members of the Rephann family retained the spelling of Rephorn. The first Rephann to be recorded in census records for Allegany County, MD is Henry Rephann. Henry Ludwig Rephann was born a native of Saxony, Germany on 14 Apr 1812. Henry immigrated to the U.S. in about 1833. It is said that Henry left Germany because of the many wars that was going on at time. Henry filed his intent to become a U.S. citizen on 22 Oct 1839 at the Allegany County Court House. He became naturalized on 2 Oct 1842. Henry married Mary Lydinger, daughter of Nicolas and Barbara Lydinger on 11 Mar 1847. The Lydinger Family, also from Germany, came to the US in the late 1840’s. Henry and Mary Rephann settled in the Eckhart, MD area and had a very large family, fifteen children in all. Eleven of these children were male.
