Evening Times, Cumberland, Maryland, Saturday, July 12, 1930:  
"John Shields, aged 75, a retired miner, and native of this section, died yesterday 
in Midland. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Shields, of County Clair, 
{sic-Clare} Ireland.  Besides his widow, he is survived two sons, John, of North 
Carolina, and Joseph Shields, of Frostburg; three sisters, Mrs. Laura Flynn, 
Frostburg; Mrs. Katherine Arnold, Mt. Savage and Mrs. Orlick, Baltimore, and two 
brothers, James and Charles Shields, of Frostburg.  Funeral services will be held 
Monday morning at 9 o'clock in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland.  Interment 
will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Frostburg."
