State Trooper Grayson S. Dunlap said Mrs. Stakem was walking to church in Midland, a quarter mile from her home, when the machine, said to be traveling at high speed, rounded a curve and struck her. She was literally "torn in two," the trooper said, and the car careened from the road, upsetting in a field. Driver Badly Injured Atkinson was extricated from the wrecked car and taken to Miners Hospital, Frostburg, where he was reported in critical condition yesterday, with a fractured skull and multiple cuts and bruises about the head and body. Dennis Gallihue, 43, also of Frostburg, riding with Atkinson, was treated for minor cuts and bruises. The machine, owned by Webster Ball, of Frostburg, was traveling at such speed that it careened across the road to hit the woman, walking on the left side of the hard-surfaced highway, Trooper Dunlap reported. Leaves Ten Children Mrs. Stakem is survived by her husband and ten children, three of them serving overseas with the armed forces. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and of the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her children are: Jerome J., of El Dorado, Ark.; Clement, of Midland; Lawrence, of Baltimore; Joseph and Thomas C., with the Army in the South Pacific; James B. Jr., with the Army in England; Paul, at home; Mrs. Henry Milford, Lonaconing; Mrs. William Logsdon, at home; Teresa, of Baltimore; a brother, Anthony Sharp, of Frostburg; four sisters, Mrs. Christina Walters, Turtle Creek, Pa.; Mrs. William Logsdon, of Swissvale, Pa.; Mrs. Graff Haverstick, of Frostburg, and Mrs. John Cadden, of Ashville, Ky. She also leaves eleven grandchildren. Mrs. Stakem was a daughter of Anthony and Mary Sharp, of Midland. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, 9 a.m., from St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland, with the Rev. Lawrence Kilkenny, pastor, officiating.
