Funeral services for John Thomas Walsh, 73, retired public school teacher, who died 
early Saturday morning at the Allegany Hospital, where he had been a patient since 
May 20, were held today at 9 a.m. in St. Patrick's Catholic church, with interment 
in St. Mary's cemetery, Lonaconing. Mr. Walsh, who taught for many years in the 
Allegany county schools and was a member of the Centre Street faculty when he 
retired, resided at the Walton Hotel here in recent years. When he was eighteen 
months old he lost his right arm at the shoulder during the battle at Bloomington 
bridge in 1864. He was asleep in his crib when a "pumpkin ball" from a large 
calibre rifle came through the roof of his home, which was in the line of fire as 
the Union and Confederate forces battled over the nearby fields. His sister, Mary, 
less than ten years old, crouched over the crib to protect the baby as bullets tore 
through the frame dwelling. The "pumpkin ball" struck her, inflicting fatal wounds 
and mutilated the baby's arm. Despite the loss of his arm, he completed his 
education and became a teacher in the county schools, serving for many years in 
the George's Creek region. He was active some years ago in Democratic party affairs 
in the county. Mr. Walsh is survived by three sons, Edward J., Washington, D.C., 
John G., Erie, Pa., and Francis Walsh, Piedmont, W. Va.; three daughters, Mrs. Lum 
Savage and Adele Walsh, Piedmont, and Mrs. J. A. Dexter, Baltimore; two brothers, 
Edward Walsh, Clarksburg, W. Va., and Joseph Walsh, Lonaconing; four sisters, Miss 
Mary Walsh, Lonaconing; Mrs. John McDonough, this city; Sister Cecelia Maria, 
Philadelphia, and Mrs. John Shields, Pittsburgh."
