"The Herald" Piedmont, West Virginia, Fri 22 Jul 1910: " Piedmont and War Times-There, died in Cumberland at the Western Maryland hospital, last Saturday evening, July 16, a lady, Mrs. Mary Reynolds Walsh, resident of Lonaconing, whose residence for a while in Piedmont's vicinity was a very painful one, and whose memory of the surroundings are vivid long years after, even until her death. The family resided here during the years of the Civil War, and if we are not mistaken, the home was on "old" Hampshire Hill. When one of the minor raids of the Confederate was made on us, the "Johnnies" were chased out of town by a skirmishing party of "Yanks" who, having a cannon, made use of it out on Bloomington road from Westernport. A ball from this piece of artillery entered the house of the Walsh's over on Hampshire hill, killing a dear little girl, and taking off the arm of a little boy baby. That boy is now well known in Allegany county, Md., where the family have long resided, he from early manhood engaged in the profession of teaching, at present, and for some years back, being principal of the large public school at Midland."
