Mr. Welsh, who was 65 years of age, had been for a number of years watchman for the B & O railroad, and was stationed a short distance west of Piedmont, along the river just opposite the pulp mills. It seems that a freight car was being taken down the side-track, next the river that morning and at the time the pulp mill was blowing off the steam from its boilers, which obscured his sight, and he thought the noise he heard was from a train on the south track. The train struck him and a car passed across his body, but did not sever it. He was born in Ireland, but had spent nearly all his life at Piedmont. He is survived by five children, Misses Mary Ellen and Bridget and Messrs. Thomas, James and Joseph, all of whom are single and reside at home. Mr. Welsh spent his life in the service of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad and assisted to build the Philadelphia branch. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place Tuesday from St. Peter's Catholic church, Rev. Thos. E. Gallagher officiating. The pallbearers were John Kirk, Thomas Boyles, Michael Walsh, Patrick Codire, Patrick Malone and John Faherty. Among those who attended the funeral from out of town were his brother, Mr. Richard Welsh, and wife, Mr. Thomas J. Welsh and Miss Della Thornton, of Baltimore; Mr. John Welsh and two sons, Thomas and Richard, of Pittsburgh; Mr. Thomas Lee and wife and Mr. John Lee and wife, of Cumberland. Mr. Thomas Welsh, son of the deceased, is quite ill with typhoid fever." This file is located at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/md/allegany/obits/w/welsh-b.txt
