MD Estates where he is listed as having paid monies: Thomas BARCUS Estate 11 AUG 1817 and John BRIDENHAM Estate 10 APR 1806. (Maryland Counties* Philip Sr. died without a will. As a result, a William RIDGELY was appointed Trustee for the estate of Philip HANSEL Sr. on 18 APR 1822 by an Allegany Co. MD Court. Jacob acted as administrator of the estate from 1819 to 1823. Jacob later sued his brothers & sisters in Allegany County Maryland Court of Chancery on OCT 1823(Book 1,p.45) to force the sale of their dad's farm. The money was to reimburse Jacob for $44.89 that Jacob had overpaid the creditors of Phillip Sr. & in addition Jacob claimed that Phillip Sr. owed him $400. Interestingly, Jacob had been living on the farm & paying the estate $80/year rent since his father's death. Since brothers, George, John, & Solomon, were minors, the court appointed a John HAYES as their guardian in the case. The court ordered the sale to the highest bidder to be held between noon & 3:00PM 23 APR 1822 with 1/4 of bid payable immediately and the remainder in three equal annual installments. The Court papers describe the land as containing: * "..About 137 acres of Land, 70-80 acres of which are cleared, and laid off into convenient fields with about 15 acres of good timothy meadow the residue in timber. There are on the farm a comfortable dwelling house, a large barn, a saw mill a new Great mile house(?), 40 feet square. This property is on Jennings Run to Frostburg.."(Notice published in WESTERN HERALD of Cumberland MD) * Highest bidder: Jacob HANSEL, the complaintant, for $2,000. On 9 DEC 1823, Jacob HANSEL made a final accounting with the court & listed disbursements to: Jesse SPURRIER($6.375), Sarah HANSEL($150), George THISTLER($232.27), Morgan HUFF($73.189), Jacob WORKMAN($4.33), & Peter PRESTON($6.00). By 8 SEP 1832, Jacob had paid off the $2000 and the Estate's Trustee, Wm. RIDGELY, signed over the deed to the above mentioned Pumkin Hall tract with James AMOS & Jonathan SHAW as witnesses(Book Q, p.251). The other eight heirs maintained a 1/9 interest in the 'Pumpkin Hall' & 'Squirrel Neck' tracts until the late 1830's when most of them sold their interests to Henry KOONTZ, husband to Catherine(b.c1796MD) . Henry KOONTZ(b.c1785MD) was living in Allegany Co., MD in the 1850 Census but may have died in Monongalia Co., VA(WV) in 1854.
