_________________________________________________________________________ Ruth (Farmer) Twigg is my 4th great-grandmother. She was the wife of the infamous "Fleetfoot" John Twigg,. This marriage is believed to have taken place around 1784. It is from the story that Ruth (Farmer) Twigg was an Indian that the legend grew of the black-eyed and blue-eyed Twiggs. This story has been with us for around two centuries. It has been documented in just about every writing I have seen in reference to Allegany Co. history, including The History of Allegany County Maryland (1923). There are descendants of "Fleetfoot" John and Ruth (Farmer) Twigg who, to this day believe they are Indian. There are just as many believe Ruth was the daughter of John or Elias Farmer of Bedford Co. PA. Neither has been proven or disproven. Following is a copy of Ruth (Farmer) Twigg's will written 16 May 1837 and probated 14 February 1838 (Allegany Co. Wills A:418). There have been no spelling corrections. Make note that the witness David Twigg, later married Sevilla Twigg, Ruth's daughter. This marriage is believed to have taken place arount 1841, after Ruth's death. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF RUTH (FARMER) TWIGG: In the name of God, Amen: I, Ruth Twigg of Allegany County in the State of Maryland being sick and weak in body but of sound disposing mind, memory and understanding considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby be better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me hence do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say; First and principally, I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth to be deacently buried at the discretion of my executor hereinafter named and after my debts and funeral charges are paid, I devise and bequeath as follows: First I give and bequeath unto my sons Nathan Twigg, Elias Twigg, Francis Twigg, Brice Twigg, Greenberry Twigg, Osborn Twigg, Simeon Twigg, Aden Twigg, John Twigg, Robert Twigg, Sala Twigg and Elsy Twigg each the sum of twenty-five cents. 2nd I devise and bequeath all the rest and residue of my estate both real and personal to my daughter Sevilla; And lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my daughter Sevilla Twigg to be sole executrix of this my last will and testament revoking and annuling all former wills by me heretofore made ratifying and confirming this and non other to be my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have here unto set my and affixed my seal this sixteenth day of May in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and thirty-seven. her RUTH X TWIGG mark Signed sealed published and declared by Ruth Twigg the above testator as and for her last will and testament in the presence of us who at her request in her presence of each other have subscribed our names as witness thereto.
