Dixon O'Dell, of the County Surveyor's office, found in a heap of rubbish two interesting relics in the shape of two poll-books used in an election in Baltimore city on October 16, 1817. At the time of the election Baltimore city was embraced within Baltimore county. When the city became separated from the county a number of old documents, including these books were sent from the city to the county. On the back of one of the books is the representation of a cock pit, with two fighting cocks. The pit is surrounded by a crowd of sports in old colonial dress. A picture on the back of the other book represents a man, in colonial dress, sitting before a chess board. Under the picture are the words: "A Knowing One," while above it are printed: "If knowledge of the world makes men villains, may Juba live in ignorance." One of the books contained the names of the voters of "the First ward and Second district of the city of Baltimore," and a record of the votes cast for Edward G. Woodyear and Thomas Kell for delegates to the General Assembly. The other book was used in "the Eighth district of the city of Baltimore."
