All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/md/mdfiles.htm ************************************************ Baltimore County Union January 18, 1902 HUNT, JOSEPH CURTIS - At his residence in Baltimore, January 12, 1902, JOSEPH CURTIS HUNT, aged 77 years, son of the late Caleb Hunt, of the 10th district. Capt. J. Curtis Hunt died at his home in Baltimore, on Sunday last, after a brief illness, aged 77 years. He was a native of My Lady's Manor, Baltimore county, and when a young man became a conductor on the Northern Central Railway. Later he was employed by the Hanover and Gettysburg Railroad and the Western Maryland in the same capacity, retiring from the latter about twelve years ago. His widow, who was Miss Annie E. Curtis, survives him. He also leaves one daughter - Mrs. James W. Jerome, of Baltimore. Deceased was a half brother of Mr. Levi Hunt, of Towson, and their father, Caleb Hunt, lived to be upwards of one hundred years of age, while his mother lived to the age of 107. BIRMINGHAM, LUTHER MEREDITH - On January 4, 1902, at "Birmingham," near Shane, Baltimore county, LUTHER MEREDITH BIRMINGHAM. Mr. Luther Meredith Birmingham, a well-known farmer and auctioneer of the 7th district, died at his home "Birmington," (as in paper) near Shane, on Tuesday, January 14th, aged about 68 years. Mr. Birmingham was born on the farm where he died and spent almost his entire life there. At one time, he conducted the hotel on the corner of Hillen and Forrest streets, Baltimore, known as Streett's Hotel. He was a life long Democrat and frequently represented his party as a delegate from the 7th district in county conventions. Although several times an aspirant for nominations he never held an elective office. His wife, who was Miss Alverda Hawkins, died about seven years ago. She was a sister of Mr. E. C. Hawkins and Mrs. John Hutchins, of My Lady's Manor. Mr. Birmingham is survived by four sons and two daughters. CROWTHER, WILLIAM CRAWFORD - At Mt. Repose, near Cockeysville, January 10, 1902, WILLIAM CRAWFORD, aged 19 years, eldest son of William B. Crowther. William Crawford Crowther, son of Mr. and Mrs. William B. Crowther, of "Mt. Repose," near Cockeysville, died on Friday night of last week, after a third attack of typhoid- pnenmonia, aged 19 years. He was the eldest of ten children and a grandson of Mr. John Crowther, Jr., president of the Towson National Bank. The funeral took place at Sherwood P. E. Church, Cockeysville, on sunday afternoon, the rector, Rev. A. T. Pindell, conducting the services. The pall-bearers were Bosley Jessop, Gwynn Crowther, Bosley Crowther, Summerfield Crowther, Guy Crowther and Charles Hiss. RUTTER, EDWARD T. - At Owings' Mills, January 12, 1902, EDWARD T. RUTTER. KIDD, JANE - In Baltimore, January 13, 1902, JANE, aged 73 years, wife of Jared D. Kidd, formerly of Baltimore county. SHEA, DENNIS F. - Near Mt. Washington, January 13, 1902, DENNIS F. SHEA, aged 37 years. THUMAN, MARY AGNES - At Catonsville, January 13, 1902, MARY AGNES, wife of HENRY J. THUMAN. Mrs. Mary A. Thuman died of consumption on Monday last, at her home on the Frederick road, west of Catonsville, in the 44th year of her age. She is survived by four children. Deceased was a devout member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, Catonsville. Her husband, Mr. Henry J. Thuman is a draughtsman in Baltimore. EVANS, THOMAS JOHNSON - Mr. Thomas Johnson Evans died at his home in Baltimore, on Tuesday last, in the 83d year of his age. He was a native of Baltimore, a son of Hugh W. Evans and a great-grandson of Thomas Johnson, who was once Governor of Maryland. In 1842 Mr. Evans married Miss Cornelia Gittings, daughter of Archibald Gittings, of Baltimore county, who survives him, with one son and one daughter - Nr, Henry Falls Evans and Mrs. William Bond, both of whom are residents of Denver, Col. The remains will be finally interred at St. John's Church, Kingsville. GROSS, JACOB - Mr. Jacob Gross, a large land-owner and successful farmer near Jarrettsville, died on Saturday morning last. He was born in Germany in 1820 and came to this county with his family who settled in Harford in 1827. When 28 years of age he married Kesiah Bryley, who died several years ago. He is survived by five sons, all of whom are farmers in Harford county, viz., William B., Thomas, Luther J., Richard and Frank Gross. He also leaves one daughter, who is the wife of Mr. James R. Barton. WORTHINGTON, MARY E. - Mrs. Mary E. Worthington, widow of J. Moores Worthington, died January 9th, at her late home, "Riverview," near Darlington, Harford county, after an illness of ten days. She was a native of Baltimore county and the youngest child of Abraham and Rachel Scott, and a sister of the late Edwin Scott, of Western Run Valley.nnShe was united in marriage to the late J. Moores Worthington in 1875, and is survived by three children - Edwin Scott, Helen Leo and Edith Dawson. The funeral took place on Saturday, 11th inst., union services being held at the house. Miss Lizzie Forwood sang very feelingly "Lead Kindly Light," a favorite hymn of the deceased. The interment was in Darlington Cemetery. CADOGAN, MRS. - Mrs. Cadogan, wife of Mr. Thos. Cadogan, of Dickeyville, Baltimore county, died of cancer on Monday last, aged 7? years. She was a native of Ireland, but had lived in this country forty years. Beside her husband she is survived by four sons and ? daughters. On Tuesday Mr. Cadogan's brother, Walter Cadogan, died at his home in Baltimore, from the effects of an operation. (see obit of Mrs. Cadogan) McPHERSON, HANNAH M. - Mrs. Hannah M. McPherson died at her home in Baltimore, on Monday last, at an advanced age. She was the widow of Capt. Wm. W. McPherson, a veteran of the war of 1812, and a daughter of the late Joshua Brooks, of Catonsville, Baltimore county. She leaves two daughters - Mrs. Lydia O. Kemp and Mrs. Heithe (?) S. Gill. HARE, WILLIAM F. - Mr. William F. Hare died on Tuesday last, at the home of his son, Mr. Wm. W. Hare, of Phoenix, N. C. R. R.,aged 89 years. The cause of his death was paralysis. For many years Mr. Hare was a resident of the 5th district. He is survived by five sons and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. KASTE, MARY - Mrs. Mary Kaste died at her home, Rare Hill, near Mt. Washington, on the 9th instant, of paralysis, aged 53 years.
