GARRETT, BENJAMIN H. - At Govanstown, February 11th, 1902, BENJAMIN H. GARRETT, husband of Lavinia M. Garrett, aged 68 years Mr. Benjamin Howard Garrett died at his home in Govanstown, on Tuesday last, from a complication of diseases, aged 68 years. He was a native of the 7th district of this county and a son of the late Lemuel Garrett. He is survived by a widow and three children. For years Mr. Garrett was forman in a sash factory in Baltimore. He was a member of the Order of Odd Fellows.. APPOLD, SUSAN CORNELIA - At her residence in Baltimore, February 12th 1902, SUSAN CORNELIA, daughter of the late Samuel Appold. BETZOLD, MICHAEL - At Catonsville, February 9th, 1902, MICHAEL BETZOLD, aged 69 years. Mr. Michael Betzold was found dead in his bed at Catonsville, on Sunday morning last. When he retired the night before he appeared to be in his usual health. Dr. Charles L. Matfeldt said the cause of his death was heart disease. Mr. Betzold was 71 years old and came to this country from Germany shortly before the Civil War, settling in Catonsville, Besides his widow he is survived by two daughters and two sons. Mr. George A. Betzold, of Catonsville, is a son of the deceased. BAY, NATHAN - At his home, near Finksburg, Carroll county, February 9th, 1902, NATHAN BAY, in the 65th year of his age. SADTLER, C. COLUMBUS - In Baltimore, February 10th, 1902, C. COLUMBUS SADTLER, in his 70th year. Mr. Christopher Columbus Sadtler, for many years a resident of Baltimore county, died at his home in Baltimore, on Monday last, aged 70 years. He had not been actively engaged in any business for forty years. Mr. Sadtler was a son of Capt. Philip B. Sadtler and was a native of Baltimore city. One of his brothers is Rev. Benjamin Sadtler, who was for some years principal of Lutherville Female Seminary. Mr. Sadtler's wife, who survives him, is a daughter of the lat Samuel Brady, Sr., of Green Spring Valley. He also leaves one son and four daughters, on of whom is the wife of Mr. Milton Morris. Deceased was a member of the Society of the War of 1812, and an honorary member of the Gardeners' Club. FLUHARTY, MARY E. R. - At Govanstown, February 12th, MARY E. R., aged 58 years and 21 days, wife of William R. Fluharty. Mrs. Mary E. Fluharty, wife of Mr. William R. Fluharty, secretary and treasurer of the Baltimoren Cemetery Company, died suddenly on Wednesday, from an attack of apoplexy, at her home on Woodbourne avenue, Govanstown, aged 58 years. Her husband and four children survive her. WATKINS, JAMES CAREY THOMAS - At Roland Park, February 8th, 1902, JAMES CAREY THOMAS, son of Frank D. Watkins. Mr. James Carey Thomas Watkins, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Watkins, died last Saturday, after an illness of eleven weeks, at his home, Woodlawn road, Roland Park. His bad health had prevened him from finishing his college course and engaging in business, as well, but he was well known to and beloved by a wide circle of friends. Mr. Watkins was a member of the Society of Orthodox Friends and took an active interest in the work of the church. HOFSTETTER, JOSEPH - In Baltimore, February 8, 1902, JOSEPH HOFSTETTER, in his 77th year. PHILIPS, MARGARET S. - Mrs. Margaret S. Philips died at her home in Baltimore, on Saturday last, from the effects of a stroke of paralysis. She was the wife of Mr.Charles Philips and a member of the Cline family of the 1st district of this county. Two sons also survive her. The late Daniel Cline, who was once warden of the Towson jail, was a brother of the deceased. CLARK, WILLIAM - Mr. William Clark died suddenly of apoplexy, on Thursday last, at the home of his brother-in-law, Mr. Joseph C. Whitney, in Green Spring Valley. He had been an invalid for several years. Mr. Clark was the eldest son of the late William Clark, of Howard county, and 51 years of age. He was unmarried. KANE, THOMAS - Mr. Thomas Kane, who had been sick a long time with consumption, died at his home in Texas, N. C. R. R., on Thursday last, aged 32 years. He was unmarried and is survived by his mother, three sisters and one brother. Two of the sisters are teachers in the public schools of the county. HARDINGE, HENRIETTA KEMP - Henrietta Kemp Hardinge, second child of Mr. Harold Hardinge, cashier of the Patapsco National Bank of Ellicott City, died on Saturday morning last at Hannah More Academy, Reisterstown, after a short illness from pneumonia. She was 13 years of age and had been a student of the academy a few months. The child's mother, who was with her when she died, is a daughter of Col. Thomas H.Hunt, a well known citizen of Ellicott City. UPTON, ELIZABETH - The funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Upton, wife of Mr. John W. Upton, a well known farmer of the 2d district, took place on Sunday last at Mt. Olive M. E. Church, Rockdale, and was largely attended. Rev. G. F. Farring, of Harper's Ferry M. E. Church; Rev. L. M. Chambers, of Sumerfield Circuit,and Rev. C. E. Redecker, of Hebbville Evangelical Church, conducted the services. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Luther Timanus, Henry Reiblich, George Reiblich, George W. Longley, William F. Piel and David Kalb. Mrs. Upton, who was 73 years of age and a life-long resident of that section of the county, died on Thursday. COFIELL, CHILD - Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Cofiell lost their youngest child with scarlet fever a few days ago. BARTON, JAMES - Mr. James Barton, a well known citizen of the 7th district, died on Monday last, at his home on the road leading from the York turnpike to Rayville, aged about 75 years. He had been in feeble health a long time. Mr. Barton is survived by a widow two sons and three daughters. HAPSON, LEE - Mr. Lee Hapson, who had been employed at the Beaver Dam Marble Quarries, died of pnuemonia at his home at Oregon, on Thursday, in the 32d year of his age. He was a native of Virginia. A widow and three children survive him. WALKER, CLARA R. - Mrs. Clara R. Walker, wife of Mr. Henry G. Walker, died February 1st, at her home, Pleasantville, Harford county. She was the youngest daughter of the late George R. and Rebecca Hunt, of Long Green, and was in the 41st year of her age. She had been a great sufferer and her death was due to a complication of diseases. Although Mrs. Walker was subjected to the most excruciating suffering her cheerful disposition and implicit trust in God were her constant companions to the end, and during the last hours of life the four little children that survive her were called to the bedside to receive a parting blessing. The interment was at Friendship Church. The pall-bears were Messrs. C. C. Coale, Frank Riley, W. H. Grey, W. S. Scarff, J. B. Twining and Carvil E. Amoss. The pastor of the church officiated. RITTER, MARTHA A. - Mrs. Martha A. Ritter died on the 7th inst., at her home at Rockland, Falls road, aged 73 years. The cause of her death was a complication of diseases from which she had suffered about three years. For twenty-five years Mrs. Ritter had been keeper of the tollgate at Rockland. She was twice married. Her first husband was Thomas A. Smith, by whom she had five children, four of whom survive her. They are William H. Smith, of Union Bridge; John R. Smith, of Mount Washington; Mrs. J. Thomas Staines, of Arlington, and Mrs. David Hare, of Green Spring Valley. Her second husband was Mr. Henry T. Ritter, by whom she is survived. Mrs. Ritter was one of The Union's oldest subsscribers.
