Last Will and Testament of Mary Johnson Jamison Goldwait Dated September 6th 1821

In the name of God, Amen: I Mary Goldthwait of the City of Baltimore in the State of 
Maryland being sick and weak of body but of sound disposing mind and understanding, 
considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being 
desirous to settle all my worldy affairs and thereby be better prepared to leave this world 
when it shall please God to call me hence, do therefore make and publish this my last will 
and testament in manner and form following. That is to say; First and Principally I commit 
my Soul into the hands of Almighty God, and my Body to the Earth, to be decently buried 
at the discretion of my Executors hereinafter named, and after my debts which are but few 
and small, and all of my funeral charges are paid I devise and bequeath as follows: 

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Caecilius C. Jamison all the balance both principal 
andinterest of the money arising from my proportion of the Real Estate of my Father sold 
to my Brother Thomas Johnson to him and his heirs forever. 

Item I give and bequeath unto my said son Caecilius C. Jamison all my proportion of my 
Sister Ann Owings Estate, also all the balance due me from my Sister Rachel Woodward 
Estate to him and his heir forever. 

Item I give and devise unto my Grandson Mason Jamison twenty six shares in the Union 
Bank of Maryland(each share one hundred dollars) and ten shares in the Franklin Bank of 
Baltimore, to him and his heirs forever, with the request that my Executors hereinafter 
named by particular in giving him a Classical education to fit him for the study of Law, 
Medicine or Divinity, also I give and devise unto my Grandson Mason Jamison all my 
Silver Plate and Plated ware. Knives and forks as shall hereafter be named viz: One silver 
coffee pot, one silver tea pot,one pint can, one ? strainer and funnel, one dozen and nine 
Tablespoons(new) Two dozen and seven tea spoons, three pair sugar tongs, four salts, 
one soup ladle, one large gravy spoon--plated ware, two cake baskets, two quart cans, 
one set of castors, one tea cady, one small tea pot, one coffee pot, one chocolate pot, two 
pair of high candlesticks, two pair of low sticks, one pair of snuffers and tray(all good as 
new) one case of silver handled knives and forks, one with Ivory, two cream pots, and one 
sugar dish or bowl. It is my desire that my son C.C. Jamison will take particular care of 
the above named articles and transfer them safe and in good order to my said Grandson 
Mason Jamison if he should live to arrive to the age of twenty-one. I also give and devise 
to my Grandson Mason Jamison my Gold Watch(which is a very valuable one) also my 
Library and everything appertaining thereto. Also I give to my said Grandson Mason 
Jamison a lot or lots of ground situated in the City of Washington purchased of Moscrop 
by Samuel Goldthwait , my late husband, wherein his heirs forever, but in case of the event 
of my Grandson Mason Jamisons death before he arrives at the age of twenty-one, my will 
and desire is that my son Caecilius C. Jamison have and possess all the property herefore 
devised to him. Item my will and desire is that all my household and kitchen furniture that 
has not been heretofore devised be sold at Public Auction to the highest bidder, and the 
net proceeds be disposed of in the following manner. Viz: 

Item. I give and devise to my Negro man Carrollton, two hundred dollars which sum my 
Executors hereafter named is to be placed in the Savings Bank of Baltimore, the interest 
thereof is to be exclusively for his use, and for his heirs forever.. 

Item. I give and devise to my Negro girl Mary forty dollars which sum also is to be placed 
in the Savings Bank of Baltimore as above directed. The interest thereof is to be 
exclusively for her use, and for her heirs forever. Item. I

give and devise to my Negro Woman Darkey a suit of black. Item. My will and desire is 
that all my Negroes namely, Carrollton, Darkey & Mary be free and they are by this 
instrument of writing declared and pronounced free on the day of my death. 

Item. I will and devise to my Sister Elizabeth Fox all my wearing apparel. 

Item. I will and devise to my Niece Ann Augusta Sperry my Diamond Ring till her 
Daughter Elizabeth Emily Sperry becomes of age. Then she is to receive it as a Legacy 
from me to her and her heirs forever with a request that it is never to go out of her family. 

Item. I give and devise to my Brother John Johnson a sword cane now in my possession, 
not on account of value, but as a memento to my affection for him. 

My will and desire is that all the money arising from the sale of my household and kitchen 
furniture as heretofore directed, and all my money that may be found in my house, or in 
any Banks after the Legacies are satisfied and all my personal charges paid,the balance to 
be invested in the Stock of the United States Bank, or in the United States Stock at the 
discretion of Executors, which I give and devise to my Grandson Mason Jamsion to him 
and his heirs forever. 

My will and desire is to be buried at Pleasant Green alongside my Parents and that my 
Executors cause a Tombstone to be placed over my Grave as soon as Practicable under 
the immediate direction of my Brother Thomas Johnson. And 

Lastly, I do hereby constiture and appoint my dear Son Caeciluis C. Jamison and my 
particular friend Joseph Jamison to be Executors of this my last will and testament, 
revoking and annulling all former Wills by me heretofore made, Ratifying and Confirming 
this, and none other to be my last will and Testament. In Testimony whereof I have 
hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal, this Sixth day of Sept in the yearof our Lord 
Eighteen hundred and twenty one.

Signed, Sealed, published and declared by Mary Goldthwait the above named testa...as 
and for her last Will and Testament, in the presence of us, who at her request, in her 
presence and in the presence of each other, have subscribed our names as witnesses 
thereto.

Baltimore County on the 19th day of September 1821 came Thomas Johnson and Samuel 
Scott two of the subscsribing evidences to the aforegoing last Will and Testament of Mary 
Goldthwait, late of said County deceased, and Thomas Johnson made oath on the Holy 
Evangely of Almightly God and Samuel Scott solemnly declared and affirmed that they did 
see the Testating sign and seal this Will that they heard her publish pronounce and declare 
the same to be her last Will and Testament that at the time of her so doing she was to the 
best of their apprenhensions of sound disposing mind memory and understanding and that 
they together with Solomon Hook the other subscribing evidence thereto subscribed their 
names as witnesses to this Will, in her presence, at her request, and in the presence of each 
other. Sworn and affirmed to in open Court.

I, Joseph Jamison appointed Executor in the last Will and Testament of Mary Goldthwait 
deceased do hereby renounce my right to the said Executorship and all right that I may 
have under the same. Septemeber 24th 1821
