De Tubeuf, a coal mining magnate in France, assumed the title of “Baron” upon coming to the United State to begin a new French settlement in the Americas and possibly to employ his coal mining techniques in this new land. In a letter to Henry Lee, then Governor of the State of Virginia, de Tubeuf stated that he wanted to colonize these lands with French immigrants. In that letter, de Tubeuf indicated that he expected numerous French immigrants to follow him to Virginia. In 1792, he purchased lands totaling at least 55,000 acres in then Russell County, Virginia (later to become Wise County, Virginia) with a mortgage of 600 pounds from the State of Virginia. The mortgage was cosigned by Charles De Spada, Louisa Duchesne, Eusebe Delaplanche, Simon Perchet, and Cesar Lefevre. Just as the new settlement was starting to take hold, Francois Pierre de Tubeuf was murdered at his home in 1795. The believed murderers were captured but subsequently escaped. The French colony never came to fruition. The sons of Francois Pierre Tubeuf eventually returned to France around 1800. The lands were abandoned and eventually reverted back to the State of Virginia. Possession of the lands was subject to extensive litigation as to their subsequent ownership and the mineral rights thereto (see Interstate Coal and Iron Company vs. Clintwood Coal and Timber Co., etal.). Charles De Spada was known to be deposed in the Clintwood Coal litigation in 1838. J Charles L De Spada was born to Charles and Louisa Margaret De Spada on May 17, 1800 in Virginia. The last known record of Charles De Spada’s whereabouts other than the above-mentioned deposition was the 1802 Personal property tax rolls of Russell Cty, Va. He does not appear in the 1810 personal property tax rolls and the Russell Cty census for 1810 did not survive. It is believed he moved to Baltimore, Md. with his family. It appears that he died shortly after the deposition because the 1842 death entry in this bible for his wife (or consort) , Louisa Margaret, refers to her as the “consort of the late Charles De Spada”. J Charles L De Spada married Ann Margritte West on March 9, 1824 in Baltimore, MD. According to another family bible (believed to be given to J Charles L by John P. West, brother-in-law, on his wedding day) there were two devastating floods in Baltimore; one in 1814 and another in 1837. The written account of the floods in this bible indicated that there was loss of life and millions of dollars of damage to the city. Historical accounts of Baltimore confirm that stone embankments and bridges were built following an even more devastating flood in 1868 to prevent the recurrence of such damage in the 1870s. (Please note that the the only other information in this Bible included the date of births of the children of J Charles L De Spada which are also included in the above Bible record.) It may have been the floods that eventually lead the De Spada’s to leave Maryland for Missouri. Ann Margritte died in 1855 in Clay Cty, Mo. In 1860, J Charles L De Spada lived next door to his daughter, Elizabeth Barbara De Spada Johnson, in Hannibal, Mo. Both his sons predeceased him with no known descendants. In 1916, Louisa Margaret De Spada died in Hannibal, Mo in the home of her grand niece and grand nephew. According to her obituary, she was the last De Spada descendant in the United States.
