Claimant 181 Pennsylvania Avenue, Baltimore, MD Declaration for obtaining a Motherıs Army Pension City of Baltimore County of Baltimore State of Maryland On this 13th day of March, A.D. 1863, personally appeared before me, Clerk of the Superior Court within and for the state and city aforesaid, Eliza Sherwood, a resident of Baltimore in the state of Maryland, aged 54 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made for and by act of Congress approved July 14th 1862. That she is the mother of Charles W. Sherwood who was a private in Company A, commanded by Captain William Gibson in the Purnell Legion, Maryland Volunteers, in the War of 1861, who died on the 30th day of December, 1862 at Camp A General Hospital, Frederick, Maryland. She further declares that her husband, Thomas G. Sherwood, died on the 6th day of February, A.D. 1841 and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as will more fully appear by referring to the proof annexed. She also declares that she has not in any manner been engaged in, or aided or abetted, the rebellion in the United States. Sherwood and Eliza Haswell previous to their marriage and was present at their wedding and saw them married by the Reverend Joseph Frey of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the house of the Father of the aforesaid Eliza Sherwood and that Thomas G. Sherwood, the husband of Eliza Sherwood, died February 6th, 1841 and that they know of no record of the aforegoing marriage or death except the family Record and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Nalls, Justice of the Peace State of Maryland, City of Baltimore On this 12th day of September, A.D. 1863, before me the subscriber, a Justice of the peace of the State of Maryland in and for the City of Baltimore, aforesaid, personally appeared Joseph F. Burke and John B. Ray, residents of the City of Baltimore, in the state of Maryland, who being duly sworn on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God, declare that they have been for twenty years well acquainted with Mrs. Eliza Sherwood, and with her deceased son Charles Sherwood, late a private in Company A, Purnellıs Legion, Maryland volunteers in the war of 1861. That the said Eliza Sherwood is the widow of Thomas G. Sherwood, and has been a widow during the past twenty years and during which time she has always been dependent on the services of her son for her support. That previous to the enlistment of her said son, Charles Sherwood, he contributed largely to her support, and has also contributed to her support since he has been in the military service of the country. The said Charles Sherwood was unmarried and has always lived with his mother until the date of his enlistment. He was employed as an upholsterer and contributed his earnings to his Mother in the same manner as one who is head of a family supplied the wants of his household. They are able to state these facts from an intimate acquaintance with the applicant and her deceased son, and further declare that they have no interest, either direct or indirect, in the application of Mrs. Sherwood for a pension. Sherwood, a private of Company A, Purnell Legion, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers, aged 22 years, 5 feet, 71/2 inches high, light complexion, eyes hazel, hair dark, born in the city of Baltimore in the state of Maryland, occupation upholsterer and enlisted in the service of the United States on the eleventh of November 1861 to serve for three years. Died suddenly at Camp A near Frederick City, Maryland, whilst in the service of the United States and in the discharge of his duty, on the 30th of December 1862, of what the surgeons stated to be inflammation of the stomach. Signed, Allen E. Forrester Camp, Company A, Purnell Legion, Infantry, Md Vols Liverpool Point, Md, May 7th 1864 I certify on honor that Charles W. Sherwood, private, Co. A, Purnell Legion who died at Camp A Hospital, Frederick, Md on the 30th of December 1862, was a man of very correct habits, his character as a soldier was excellent and he had the reputation in the company of abstaining totally from all intoxicating drinks. At the time of his death he was one of the guard at Camp A Hospital, two miles from Frederick City, Md. I being stationed at Regiment Headquarters in Frederick City received notice of his death on the morning of the 31st of December 1862 and immediately repaired to the camp. As then I learned from the attending Surgeon that his death was caused from inflammation of the stomach: he did not state what caused the inflammation. He also gave me a certificate stating the cause of death to enable me to send his remains to Baltimore and which I left with the Express Company that forwarded the body, in Frederick. The lieutenant and corporal of the guard informed me that Sherwood (the deceased) was taken sick on his post about 6 Oıclock A.M. on Dec. 30th and died about 10 O'clock P.M. the same day.5 Signed, John Reinicker First Lieutenant, Purnell Legion I certify to the good character and correct habits of Charles W. Sherwood, a private in Company ³A² Purnell legion, Maryland Volunteers Post office Address of applicant: Number 81 Pennsylvania Avenue, Baltimore,MD Claim for Motherıs Pension Proof Exhibited: The Adjutant Lieutenant reports that on the roll of November and December 1862, Charles W. Sherwood was stated to be present for duty, last paid to October 3, 1862. On Regimental Return for January 1863, he is reported died at Frederick, Md. January 1, 1863. Lieutenant Reinicker certifies that the soldier died of inflammation of the stomach, was taken ill on his post about 6 oıclock A.M. and died about 10 oıclock P.M. He, together with Captain Gibson, state that the soldier was a man of very correct habits and had the reputation of abstaining totally from intoxicating drinks. Dependence, etc: The death of the father, that the soldier left no widow or children, the relationship of claimant and that she was dependent upon the soldier for support, shown by testimony of two witnesses. Power of Attorney: None (approved by commissioner) Admitted June 22, 1864, to a pension of $8.00 per month, commencing January 1, 1863. Signed, Charles W.
