I entered Fairfax on the 19th of last August with Typhoid Fever which has left me very much debilitated; at present being the only child of a widowed Mother and she being very ill, I desire both for her sake and my own to be near her. Sherwood was a sound man when he entered the regiment in 1861 and was wounded and captured at the Battle of Front Royal May 23, 1862. he was sent to Seminary Hospital from Raccoon Ford in Sep 1863, suffering from Typhoid Fever, and is now suffering the kidney disease. ------------------------------------------------------- 26 Sep 1879 John G. Hollyday, M.D. I hereby certify that I have been the family physician of Thomas N. Sherwood since 5 June 1875. During that time I have treated him for chronic inflammation of his kidneys, affording temporary but no permanent relief. Elarwood (Eclarwood?) of #363 Mulberry Street They were each neighbors and residents of Baltimore City, MD prior to 1861 and they knew personally Thomas N. Sherwood and had every occasion to believe that he was a sound and hearty man at the date of his enlistment and that they saw him on his return and he was then very broken down in health and visited him at his boarding house, he complained of kidney disease and of our own personal knowledge he has been suffering from the same disease up to the present time. ----------------------------------------- Declaration for Original Invalid Pension 29 Sep 1879 Thomas N. Sherwood, 49 years old. Enrolled on 11 May 1861 in Co. B, 1st Reg, Md Vols, commanded by Vergil T. Mercer. And was honorably discharged on 23 May 1864. Personal Description: Age 28, height: 5 feet, four and a half inches. Complexion: dark. Hair: dark. Eyes: dark. Cut on the head and captured at Front Royal, 1862. Contracted Typhoid fever at Raccoon Ford, 1863, which left him with kidney disease as a result, which he has been suffering up to the present time. Prior to his entry into the service the above named was a man of good, sound, physical health, being when enrolled a carpenter. That he is now totally disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries as above described, received in the service of the United States. He hereby appoints with full power of substitution and revocation Frank McDonald (?) of Baltimore. Mercer He has perfect and personal knowledge that Corp Thomas Sherwood was wounded in the head by a saber cut at Front Royal on or about 23 May 1862 while in the line of duty. And further that at Raccoon Ford Sep 1863 he was taken with Typhoid fever and sent to a hospital for treatment. He was a good and faithful soldier. He was a sound healthy man when he enlisted. I am satisfied and of my own knowledge he has been suffering since he left the army, so as to incapacitate him for labour. --------------------------------------------- Dept of Interior March 1, 1881 Application # 313,546 It appears from the rolls on file in this office that Thomas Sherwood was enrolled on the 11th of May 1861 at Baltimore , in Co. B. 1st Regiment of Maryland. June 30, 1862, wounded in action, present on parole in Baltimore. Company was in action May 23, 1862 at Front Royal, VA October 31, 1863 to Dec 31, 1864, absent sick in hospital, Alexandria. Feb 26, 1864, absent, sick in Baltimore. Apr 30, 1864, present Mustered out 28 May 1864 at Baltimore, MD. to date 23 May 1864. Also known as Thomas N. Sherwood. He was wounded and taken prisoner in action at Front Royal, VA, May 23, 1862. Location of wound not stated. He was released at Winchester, VA June 3, 1862. Corporal Thomas Sherwood, Co. B. Md Volıs entered G.W. Fairfax Seminary near Alexandria, VA Aug 19, 1863 with Typhoid Fever and was transferred 8 Feb 1864. He entered Jarvis General Hospital, Baltimore, MD 10 Feb 1864 with stricture of the urethra and was returned to duty 22 March 1864. ----------------------------------------------------- Claimantıs Affidavit 5 Aug 1881 in the matter of the original invalid pension claim # 313 546 of Thomas Sherwood, late of Co B. 1st Md Vol. personally appeared before me, a justice of the peace, on this 5th day of August 1881, living at 13 Monroe St, Corner of Low and Balt. Addresses for 5 years: Up to April 1857, I lived in Baltimore on Biddle Street near Grundy St. Then I moved to St Peters, Minnesota where I lived up to April 1859. Thence to Baltimore where I lived at 450 W. Baltimore Street up to my enlistment. My occupation was that of a carpenter. Since my discharge, I first lived at Swannıs Tavern, Baltimore, for 18 months and since have continually changed my residence but all the houses within the city of Baltimore or a mile there from. My occupation was that of a carpenter as far as I could follow it. My disability claim arises from cut over the head by saber at Front Royal, 23 May 1862 and also at Raccoon Ford, Sep 1863, was taken with Typhoid Fever which left me with kidney disease. I have received treatment from Dr. Montgomery 18 months immediately following my discharge. Dr. M. died about 1875. Dr. John Patterson from 1866 to 1874; he lives at NW corner of St Paul & Franklin. Dr. G. Hollyday to present time. He lives at corner of Monroe St & Frederick Road. ----------------------------------------------------- 15 August 1881 Dr. J. H. Patterson Resident of Baltimore City Treated Thomas N. Sherwood from the fall of 1866 to the fall of 1874 for chronic disease of the kidney & bladder, brought on by Typhoid Fever whilst in the United States Service, said disease wholly disabling him from all manual labour. For previous history of his care, I refer to Dr. E. H. Baer ----------------------------------------------------------- Declaration for an Increase of invalid pension 20 June 1889 Thomas Sherwood, aged 59. He believes himself entitled to an increase on account of the fact that he was originally rated too low considering the fact that his claim was allowed for 3 distinct disabilities, i.e. saber wound, disease of the kidneys, and disease of the bladder. He asks that he be re-rated and allowed an increase at the rate paid for similar disabilities. Sherwood, age 63, enrolled at the Washington, D.C. Pension Agency at the rate of $12.00 per month, certificate # 199763, by reason of disability from saber wound to the head, disease of the bladder and kidneys, the result of typhoid fever, incurred in the military service. He believes his pension should be increased because of increased disability -- is now wholly unable to perform any manual labor whatever. His disease of kidneys brought on a heavy cough and persistent coughing has caused . . .. Has not performed any amount labor for over five years. Same report to 31 Dec 1863. 29 Feb 1864, sick in hospital in Baltimore. Prisoner of war records show him admitted to Union Hotel, Rebel Hospital in Winchester, VA, May 26 1862, wound in head. Other records show him wounded 23 May 1862 at Front Royal, VA. Since the report of 35 March 1881, additional information: Treated as T. Sherwood, AM. Co. D, 1 and 26 May 1862 to - wound in the head: as F. Sherwood, Crp, Co B, etc Aug 13 to 19, 1863, Nephritis. As Thomas Sherwood, etc, 22 -24 March 1864, convalescent, returned to duty. May 13, 1864, malingerer, returned to duty. He was furloughed 7 Jan 1864 in Gen Hosp, Fairfax Seminary, near Alexandria and returned 23 Jan 1864. Anemic as result of fever, has also stricture of the urethra from inflammation of the mucous membrane.
