CAROLINE COUNTY to wit Be it remembered that in the 11th day of November 1788 same Michael Todd of Caroline County Ano brought a deed of bargain of sale with two endorsements thereon and prayed to have the same enrolled among the records of Caroline County and upon the same 11th day of November 1788 and the same deed and endorsements were enrolled as follows to wit: THIS INDENTURE made the 5th day of November 1788 by and between John Melvill of Caroline County in the State of Maryland planter of the one part and Michael Todd of the county and state of the planter as the planter of the other part witnesseth that the said John Melvill for and in consideration of the sum of 120 pounds current money to him in hand by the said Michael Todd at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof the said John Melvill doth hereby acknowledge and thereof doth acquit and discharge the said Michael Todd his heirs and assigns by these presents hath granted bargained and sold alienated enforced released and confirmed and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell alienate enforce release and confirm unto the said Michael Todd his heirs and assigns forever all that part of a tract of land called Devonshire lying and being in the Caroline County aforesaid. Beginning at the 53rd perch on the 2nd course of the said tract of land and then runs N 36 degrees W 132 perches, then N 38 degrees E 40 perches, then S 72 degrees E 125 perches then with a straight line to the first beginning containing 58 acres and half acre of land, be the same more or less also all that pat of a tract of land called Haphazzard Enlarged lying and being also in county aforesaid beginning at 19 perches on the 11th course of the original tract of land called Haphazzard Enlarged , then runs N 8 degrees E 89 perches, then N 27 degrees E 37 perches, then with a straight line to the beginning containing 42 acres of land more or less. Together with all houses and houses gardens orchards fences improvements appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining, and also all that estate right-title interest property claim and domain whatsoever either in savior equity of him the said John Melvill therein and thereto, and the revertion and revertions remainder and remainders rents and issues and services thereof and unto the said Michael Todd his heirs and assigns forever to his and their proper uses forever and to no other use intent or purpose whatsoever and the said John Melvill doth hereby for himself his heirs executors and administrators covenant promise and grant to and with the said Michael Todd his heirs and assigns by these presents that the said lands and promises with the appurtenances unto the said Michael Todd his heirs and assigns against him the said John Melvill and his heirs and against all and every other person or persons whatsoever lawfully claiming or to claim by from or under him them or any other of them shall and with warrant and by these presents forever defend. In witness whereof the aforesaid John Melvill hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year first above written, sealed and delivered in the presence of John Stevens Richardson. Signed by John Melvin Be it remembered that on the 5th day of November 1788 appeared before us the subscribers two of the Justices of the Peace for Caroline County in the state of Maryland the within named John Melvill and Nancy his wife and acknowledge this deed and the land and premises therein mentioned to be the right and estate of the within named Michael Todd his heirs and assigns for with according to the true intent and meaning of the same Nansey, his wife of the said John Melvill being by us first privately examined out of the hearing of her said husband declared she made her acknowledgement freely without being induced thereto by fear or threats of ill usage by her said husband or fear of his displeasure.
