Mrs. Phoebe Alice Garner, 75, inflicted the fatal shot about 6:30 a.m. in the living room of her home near Taneytown, while her husband, Jerry J. Garner, is reported to have been engaged in chores outside the house. Dr. James T. Marsh, deputy county medical examiner, has issued a certificate of suicide. No definite reason for the act has been given, but she is understood to have been in ill health for the past six weeks. Mrs. Garner was born in Frederick county, a daughter of the late Otho Augustus and Elizabeth Smith Shank. Her first husband, John Crouse, died many years ago. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran church, Taneytown, and formerly belonged to the Bible Class and Missionary Society. Surviving in addition to her husband, are two brothers and a sister, Clarence Shank, Baltimore, John Shank, Florida, and Mrs. Laura Newcomer, Taneytown. Private funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home in Taneytown Sunday afternoon at one o’clock. Rev. Glenn L. Stahl her pastor will officiate.
