Ruth Velten, 79, of Mount Airy died September 26, 2003, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of 60 years of Melvin A. Velten. Mrs. Velten was born February 2, 1924 in Baltimore. She graduted from Glen Burnie High School in 1942 and received a master's degree from Towson State. For over 20 years she was a first grade teacher at Arbutus Elementary School, retiring in 1974. Mrs. Velten was a past member of Arbutus United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and Young Adults groups. She was a former member of Magethy United Methodist Church where she held the office of financial secretary ad chairman of membership. She was a current member of Glen Burnie United Methodist Church and the Retired Teachers Association of Baltimore County. She enjoyed painting in oils, knitting, reading, flower gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Melanie V. Johnson of New Market and Margaret C. Hediger of Lutherville, 3 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 4, at 10 a..m. at Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, 2nd Ave and Crain Highway,SE, Glen Burnie. Interment will be private. Arrangements were made by Stallings Funeral Home PA., Glen Burnie. Jill M. Teunis Jill Maureen Teunis, 65, of Damascus, died September 27, 2003, at her home. Originally from Devon, England, Mrs. Teunis traveled to the United States in 1960 to care for the children of a British Army family stationed in Washington, D.C. Before the end of her one-year contract, she met Herman J. Teunis, a Montgomery County native. They married and in 1963 settled in Damascus. In 1979, after volunteering to write publicity pieces to help the Damascus High School band raise money to go to England and France to perform for the 35th anniversary of D-Day, Teunis was asked to write a regular column for the local newspaper, the Damascus Courier, which was later purchased by The Gazette. She went back to school and earned a bachelor's degree from Hood College. In 1989 Teunis was named assistant managing editor of the Damascus Courier- Gazette. She became an American citizen around 1990. In 1998 Teunis retired from The Gazette. She continued to write freelance stories for other publications and a monthly history column for the Damascus edition of The Gazette. She loved nature, gardening and birds. Despite failing health, she continued to write a column, "From My Window," every other week for the Frederick County and Mount Airy editions of The Gazette until April. Survivors in addition to her husband include two children, Jonathan H. Teunis and his wife, Kim, of Woodsboro, Md., and Jeremy W. Teunis and his wife, Shu Hui, of Kingston, Mass., and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 28325 Kemptown Road, Damascus. Kemp Mazie Henrietta Kemp, 91, of Mount Airy, formerly of Damascus, died Sept. 27 at Lorien Nursing Center in Mount Airy. Born July 6, 1912, in Ridgeville, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence E. and Rachel H. Cain Green. She was the wife of the late George F. Kemp Sr. Mrs. Kemp was a longtime member of Wesley Grove United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women of the church and the Evening Circle. Survivors include two sons, George F. Kemp Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Penhook, Va., and James E. Kemp and his wife, Lois, of Damascus; three sisters, Etta Crowthamel of Reisterstown, Eva Hargadon of Baltimore and Ivah Lucas of Brunswick; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Arrangements were made by the Olin L. Molesworth P.A. Funeral Home, Damascus. John W. Cervenka John W. Cervenka, 77, of Mount Airy, died Sept. 28, 2003, at home after a brief illness. Born February 17, 1926, in New York City, he was the son of the late William and Josephine Cervenka. He was the husband of Emmy Cervenka for 55 years. Mr. Cervenka served in the U.S. Navy (Pacific Theatre) from 1944 to 1946. He lived in Islip and East Islip, N.Y., until 1968 when he relocated for his job with Fairchild Industries. He was manager of the electronic research and development lab for Fairchild Industries as well as serving as their advisor for the 270 Manufacturing Association. Mr. Cervenka retired from Fairchild Industries in 1987. He served as a member of the Community Advisory Group for both Damascus High School and Frederick Community College, and he represented advisory groups to St. Anne's Episcopal Church and the Washington National Cathedral. He was a member and past president of Damascus Rotary Club. Survivors in addition to his wife include three children, Kenneth J. Cervenka and his wife, Cynthia, of Monrovia, Michael T. Cervenka of Damascus and Judith A. Rogers and her husband, Ward, of Frederick; one sister, Josephine Cervenka of Islip, N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Thomas Faber and his wife, Bunnie; and three grandchildren. Leo 'Bill' Moxley Leo "Bill" William Moxley, 84, of Mount Airy, died Sunday, September 28, 2003, at Westminster Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the wife of Brooxxie Bell Layton Moxley. Mr. Moxley was born on April 19, 1919, in Randallstown, Md., the son of the late James and late Virginia Moxley. He was employed by Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Lab as a carpenter. He was a member of American Legion Gold Star Post 191 Mount Airy and a veteran of the United States Navy. He also enjoyed gardening and woodworking. Carl LaRue White Mr. Carl LaRue White, 83, of Mount Airy, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Helen Jean McConnell White, his wife of 57 years. Born June 12, 1920, in Belair, Ohio, he was the son of the late Herman Ray and Goldie Crow White. In the past, Mr. White was very active with Church activities. Surviving are a son, Daryl White of Gaithersburg; a nephew, Dwayne White of Ohio; and a niece, Bridgette White of Ohio. He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond White. Born May 23, 1914 in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late Anthony Adam and Lavene Smith Nusbaum. She was the wife of the late Hulon Ballew. As a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Mt. Ranier, Md., she served many years on the Altar Guild. She retired after 30 years of service as a career federal employee. She was an avid theatre enthusiast both locally and in New York. She was a collector of fine porcelain. Surviving are stepdaughter Arlette Ballew of San Diego, Cal., niece Mary S. Pfefferkorn of Mount Airy and nephews Niles N. Spaulding of Virginia, William and Robert Nusbaum of Maryland, and Etta Lee Spaulding, wife of deceased nephew William W. Spaulding and many great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by brothers Anthony and William Nusbaum and sister, Sarah N. Spaulding. Howard Holmes Howard V. Holmes, 83, of Sykesville, died Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at the Carroll County General Hospital. Born August 5, 1920, in New York City, he was the son of the late Edmund and Johannah Malone Holmes. He was the husband of Dorothy J. Holmes of Sykesville. They would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on Oct. 17. He was a retired collections agent for the city of Baltimore. He was an army veteran of World War II. In addition to his wife he is survived by son Howard M. Holmes of Philadelphia, daughter and son-in-law Darice H. and Scot Ahrnsbrak of Silver Spring, brother Gregory Holmes of Chalfont, Pa., grandson Daniel H. Ahrnsbrak and granddaughter Rebecca D. She was the wife of Kenneth W. Hunter of Pasadena. She had been a retired biologist. Surviving in addition to her husband are sons and daughter-in-law Ken and Kathy Hunter of Sykesville and Bruce Hunter of Columbia and grandsons Matthew, Patrick and Jason Hunter, all of Sykesville. John James Kelley John James Kelley, 77, of Granite, Md. died Thursday, October 2, 2003, at Future Care, Randallstown, Md. He was the husband of Marthetta Brigstocke Kelley. He was born October 4, 1925, in Baltimore, Md., the son of the late John J. Kelley, Sr. and late Edith V. Yinger Kelley Mr. Kelley was a retired attorney for the Social Security Administration, a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII and a member of the Chesapeake Bay Submarine Veterans of WWII. Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Adrinenne P. Schiner of Glenelg, Md., Denise Leicester of Carrollton, Va.; one son, J. Paul Kelley, of Granite, Md.; and eight grandchildren. Marshall, Sr., 50, of Monrovia died Saturday, Sept. 27, at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore. He was the wife of Patti Ann Gumphrey Marshall, his wife of 30 years. Born Nov. 13, 1952, in Sand Spring he was the son of the late William and Cleo Smith Marshall. Mr. Marshall owned and operated E. L. Marshall Roofing Co., retiring several years ago. He was a Washington Redskins fan and enjoyed pitching horse shoes, taking trips to Atlantic City and family vacations to South Carolina Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Eugene L. Marshall, Jr. and Donald L. Marshall, both of Monrovia; three grandchildren, Sabrina Marshall, Eugene L. Marshall III and Isaih E. Marshall, all of Monrovia; two brothers, Archie Marshall of Mount Airy and Robert Marshall and wife Sally of Olney; two sisters, Dolly Moser, who raised him, of Mount Airy and Molly Weiss of Rockville; a brother-in-law, Kenny Collins of Florida; 8 nephews, 5 nieces as well as numerous great nieces, great nephews and friends. Richards James Arthur Richards, 77, of Damascus, died Oct. 6, 2003, at Sharon Nursing Home in Sandy Spring. Born April 26, 1926, in St. Claire, Tenn., he was a son of the late Joseph A. and Martha Way Richards. He was the husband of Charlotte M. Richards. Mr. Richards served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He owned and operated Damascus Upholstery for 31 years, specializing in furniture and auto upholstery. He was a member of Veterans Group ATF No. 96 and Damascus United Methodist Church. Survivors in addition to his wife include four children, James D. Richards and Donna Sue Abel, both of Mount Airy, Dianne M. Reeves of Westminster, and Darlene L. She had been a child provider and had worked for many years in "George's Jungle" at George Super Thrift grocery store in Eldersburg. She was born May 25, 1918 in Carroll County, Berrett, Maryland, the daughter of the late Columbus America Costley and the late Elenor Bell Dotson Costley. She was the wife of the late Carlton E. Berry She was a teacher for the Carroll County Board of Education and Baltimore City Public School System. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church in Taylorsville, Md. Numerous nieces and nephews survive her. Funeral service was held Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Directors, P.A., 1212 W. Ciepiela Carol Lynn Ciepiela, 62, formerly of Mount Airy, died on Saturday, October 11, 2003, at the home of her daughter. Born on March 16, 1941, in Baltimore, Md., she was the daughter of the late Emory Sr. and Margaret Ruth Schafer Horvath. She retired in 1996, after a lifetime of federal government service. Upon her retirement she revisited her pastime of painting and had been a member of several area arts councils. She is survived by son Greg Ciepiela of Sykesville, daughter and son-in-law Karen and Dean Pennington of Union Bridge, daughter Deborah Ruggles of Sykesville, brother Emory Horvath of CO and grandsons Dean, Jr. and Matthew Pennington. She was predeceased by a brother, Eugene Horvath. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2003, at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Rd., Sykesville. Albert Franklin Albert Augustus Franklin, 79, of Taylorsville, Md., died Friday October 10, 2003, at Kline Hospice House in Mount Airy. Md. He was born August 20, 1924 in Carroll County, Taylorsville, the son of the late Fred Franklin and the late Julia Ann Hooper Franklin. He was a truck driver and a farmer. He was the husband of the late Edna May Kline Franklin. He was the father of Ronald E. Yeager of Virginia and the late Connie J. Wolf. He was the brother of Luther J. Franklin of New Windsor, Mary Alma Franklin of New Windsor and Belva Richards of Littleton, Colo. Mr. Franklin is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Reed Roscoe Granville Reed, 88, of Sykesville, died Thursday, October 9, 2003, at Northwest Hospital Center, Randallstown. Born July 31, 1915, in Snydersburg, Md., he was the son of the late John G. and Virginia Irene Osterhus Reed. He was the husband of the late Dolores E. Reed. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1934-39. He was a member of the China Marine Association. He had been a plant manager with Maryland Glass Corporation. Surviving are daughters Romaine LaRue Becker of Finksburg and Judith Lee Reed of Hampstead, stepdaughters Charlene Gibbs of Sykesville and Laura Michael of Charlottesville, Virginia, and brother Weldon Norwood Reed of Wisconsin. He is also survived by several grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Ellen May Reed Gonzaga and by a brother, Arthur Reed. Patrick Arthur Shadoan Patrick Arthur Shadoan, 53, of Westminster, died Sunday, October 12, 2003, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital with his wife of 13 years, Julie Pryor Shadoan by his side. Born September 1, 1950, in Bethesda, Md., he was the son of Richard T. Shadoan of Sumter, S.C., and the late Lois Marie Shadoan Mr. Shadoan served four years in the U.S. Navy as an Electrician's Mate Second Class on the USS Saginaw. He graduated from Montgomery College and attended the University of Maryland. He worked in the information technology services industry for more than 20 years, the last 18 years in support of the U.S. Department of Energy as a programmer/analyst. Surviving in addition to his wife and father are his stepmother, Florence Shadoan of Sumter, S.C.; eight brothers, six sisters and four step-sisters, John R. Shadoan Sr. of Urbana, Michael Shadoan of Centerville, Va., William D. Shadoan, Peter D. Shadoan, Paul J. Shadoan and Guy G. Shadoan, of Sumter S.C., Lawrence D. Shadoan of Greenville, S.C., Claire R. Brown of Dalzell. S.C., Annette M. Murray of Severn, Md., Jeannette P. Wells of Walkersville, Md., Jacqueline I. DeMarco of Silver Spring, Md., Julie O.
