Blatz, Olive M. Blatz, 87, of Eldersburg, died on Saturday, February 28, 2004, at the Carroll Hospital Center. Born on August 5, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Walter and Edith Sickles VanDorn. She was the wife of John H. Blatz who died in 1993. Mrs. Blatz had been a homemaker for most of her life. She was born and raised in New York and later moved to Altoona, Pa., where along with her husband and children lived for many years. She later moved to Maryland with her daughter and has spent the past several years there. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Ed Hennegan of Eldersburg; sister Ruth Loudage of Hendersonville, N.C., sister-in-law: Ruth Hook of Bayside, N.Y.; and grandchildren John T. and Jeffrey Sickle, Edward J. and James M. Cawlo and Catherine E. Smith. She was predeceased by a son, John W. Blatz, who died in 1971. A memorial service was held at 11a.m. Tuesday at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel (6416 Sykesville Rd.) Sykesville with Rev. Patrick Tonry, S.M. as celebrant. Interment will be private. Ielene Burnette Ielene Burnette, 74, of Taneytown, died on Friday, February 27, 2004, at her home. She was born on May 11, 1929, in Bluefield, Va.. She was the wife of the late Earl D. Burnette who died in 1998. Mrs. Burnette had been a homemaker all of her life. She loved flowers and animals and especially her cat "Tiger." She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Linda G. and Mike Wall of Sykesville, Patricia A. and Bill Lennon of Millersville and Melissa L. and Larry J. Early of Taneytown; grandchildren, Laura, Michelle, Cindy, Paul, Steven, Elizabeth and Amanda; great-grandchildren, Danielle, Justin, Jeffrey and Leah and a great-great-granddaughter, Grace. Chris Creech Chris Creech, 81, of Woodbine, died Sunday, February 29, 2004, at Northwest Hospital Center, Randallstown. Born April 24, 1922, in Tennessee, he was the son of the late Lewis and Maggie Witt Creech. He was the husband of the late Edna Mae Creech who died in 1996. He was a retired carpenter and was involved in the building of the Baltimore City Watershed and the Liberty Dam. He was a longtime member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local #1590-Washington, DC. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a member of Stony Ridge Baptist Church. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law Thomas L. and Judy Creech and Roger and Dorothy Creech, all of Eldersburg; daughter and son-in-law Shirley and Robert Poole of Woodbine, 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 1 great- great grandchild. Sibyl P. Dent, Sibyl Padgett Dent, 82, of Reisterstown, died on Sunday, February 29, 2004, at her home. Born on March 23, 1921, in Glennville, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Ivey and Miriam Brown Padgett. She was the wife of the late Don J. Dent, Sr. who died in 1988. She had been a homemaker for most of her life. She was a volunteer for the Maryland State Department of Health & Hygiene as a home care provider. She was a volunteer at the Reisterstown Public Library and an avid bowler for many years. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel L. and Mary Dent of Jacksonville, Florida, and Don, Jr. and LouAnn Dent of Marriottsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Bill Smith of Pasadena, and Mary E. and John Sharff of Tallahassee, Florida; and daughter, Deborah Dent of Berkley Springs, W.Va. Robert Gray Jr. Robert Joseph Gray Jr., age 52, of Mount Airy, died suddenly February 23, 2004, at his home. He was born September 7, 1951, in Patchogue, New York, the son of Robert Joseph Gray Sr. and Josephine Mercurio Gray of Clarksburg, West Virginia. He was a senior information specialist for CSSI, Inc. in Washington, D.C. He served in the US Navy for 23 years and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer, W-2. He was a member of the American Legion and the Jaguar Association. He enjoyed golfing and movies. Surviving besides his parents are one son Nathan Edward Gray of South Wales, U.K., one sister Terri Lynn Yoos and husband John of Clarksburg, W.Va. and two nephews, Timothy and Michael Yoos of Clarksburg, W.Va. Smith Reaney "Smitty" S. Smith, 74, of Taneytown, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, February 28, 2004, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Betty Ann Phebus Smith. He was born May 13, 1929, in Frederick, the son of the late Amos Abner and the late Katie Pauline Sappington Smith. Mr. Smith worked as a farmer for part of his life and later worked for Baltimore Gas and Electric and then retired from AT&T. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed playing bingo and watching Days of Our Lives and Western movies. He also enjoyed blue grass and country music. Born Oct. 8, 1950 in Westminster, he was the son of the late Carroll Barnes and the late Helen McCreary Barnes Stack. He was the husband of Kathlene Marie Nickoles Barnes. He had retired from Springfield Hospital Center where he had been an LPN for 29 years. He enjoyed playing pool and was a member of the American Pool Association (APA). He played in the APA national tournament in Las Vegas last year. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Sykesville. He was a member of the Westminster Moose. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He had Wegener's Granulomatosis and participated in research programs at Johns Hopkins Hospital to help further treatment and medical research efforts relating to this disease. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters and son-in-law. Born Feb. 11, 1922, in Middletown, she was a daughter of the late Charles Jacob and Bertha Marken Lutz. Twice married, she was the wife of the late William L. Donsife and the late Clifford J. Davis Sr. Survivors include a daughter, Connie E. German of Mount Airy; one sister, Ruth B. Williams of Mount Airy; a brother, Robert Dix of Virginia; two step-children, Tanya Gordon of Frederick and Clifford Davis Jr. of Woodfield; and one grandson. Bertha Gosnell Mrs. Bertha Mae Gosnell, 81, of Howard County died Sunday March 7, 2004, at the Continuum Care Nursing Home, Sykesville, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was the wife of the late James A. Gosnell who died in 1980. Born in Montgomery County on August 15, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Carlton and Helen Howes Oland of Woodbine. Mrs. Gosnell was a longtime member of the Lisbon United Methodist Church where she had served as past secretary and president of the Women's Society. She retired in 1984 as vice president of the Westminster Union Bank in Westminster. Surviving are five daughters, Rebecca Marquardt and her husband Ralph of Centerville, Joyce Gilliece and her husband James of Ellicott City, Darlene Koch of St.Cloud, Minnesota, Janet Taylor and her husband Robert Jr. of Columbia, and Karen Gosnell of Relay; 14 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and one sister, Lucille Massey and her husband William of Mardella Springs. Hubbard Mary Eleanor Hubbard, 85, of Marriottsville, died on Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at the Northwest Hospital Center. Born on December 6, 1918, she was one of seven children born to the late Eleanora and the late Richard Dauman. In 1920, she, along with a group of actors and actresses from Ford's Theater, Baltimore, posed as one of the first poster children for the Coca-Cola Company. She was a graduate of Southern High School in the advanced curriculum in 1936. She had been employed at the former O'Neill's department store located at Charles and Lexington streets, Baltimore. In 1939, "Peaches," as she was known in high school, married Edgar Samuel Hubbard, Sr., her high school sweetheart and who predeceased her. Edgar and Eleanor moved to Linthicum Heights in 1940. There they raised a family of three children and together in 1952, created Linthicum Nursery, Inc., a landscaping and design firm that ultimately serviced such clients as the Pimlico Racetrack, Horizon House, many residential clients and commercial building contractors, including a variety of roof top gardens on high rise buildings in downtown Baltimore. When the business expanded, they relocated to a farm in Marriottsville, in 1966. As the family grew, Eleanor and Edgar were able to retire. They enjoyed their dream fulfilled -- a country home -- where she enjoyed many years of flower and vegetable gardening during the summer months, and propagating indoor plants in the winter. Her green thumb was an inspiration to everyone. She was a member of the Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, Eldersburg. She was the loving mother of her beloved son, Edgar S. Hubbard, Jr. of Perry Hall and her devoted daughter, Sharon H. Jackson of Marriottsville, mother-in- law of Jeannie Hubbard and Alan E. Jackson; sister of Delma Brandenburg of Linthicum, Charles Williams of Glen Burnie and Alice Viehmeyer of Coatesville, Pa. She is also survived by her son, Richard Hubbard, and many nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the husband of the late Betty Lee Shaw. He had been a sergeant with the Baltimore County Police Department in Garrison. He was an Army veteran of WWII. Interment is in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville. James E. Stiles Sr. James E. Stiles Sr., 77, of Eldersburg, died Sunday March 7, 2004 ,at Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster. Born February 9, 1927, in Georgia, he was the son of the late Fred and Estie Clark Stiles. He was the husband of Willie Hyder Stiles of Eldersburg, his wife of 28 years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Joan Bishop Stiles. He served in WWII as a paratrooper in H Company 508th Regiment 82nd Airborne Division. In post-war Germany he served as an honor guard for General Eisenhower. After his service days, he worked at Bethlehem Steel and spent 39 years with CR Daniels as traffic and warehouse manager. Since retiring in 1988, he has delivered flowers for Hutchinson's Florist in Eldersburg. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter and son-in-law Colleen "C.J." Stiles and Steve Shatzer of Westminster, stepdaughter Lori Hyder Carter and her husband Ed Carter, stepson David Hyder and his wife Eddie and stepson Tom Hyder and his wife Jackie and 3 grandchildren. Dorothy Mary Riggs von Barby Dorothy Mary Riggs von Barby, 95, of Frederick, died from pneumonia on March 6, 2004. Mrs. Von Barby was born March 28, 1908 and would have been 96 years old at the end of the month. She was the daughter of the late Augustus Riggs III of Cooksville, and the late Amalia de Murguiondo Riggs. While finishing her education in Europe, Dorothy Riggs met her future husband, Baron Hans Wiprecht von Barby through mutual family members in Germany. They were married in Howard County in 1928 and moved to Holland where the Baron entered the import-export business. The Von Barby's and their two children Hans and Maria-Nomita, were living in Germany at the outbreak of World War II and unable to leave the country. During the war, Mrs. Von Barby found herself in a foreign country with two young children, her husband in the German Army, her brother in the American Army and her nephew, a prisoner of war near the Riggs family home who made frequent visits to them. After the war, the Von Barbys, who no longer used their titles, imigrated to America. They lived in Florida, Washington, D.C., and for the last 35 years, in Frederick. Her husband suffered a fatal stroke in 1986. Mrs. Von Barby is survived by a son, Hans Wiprecht von Barby Jr. of Evergreen, Colo.; a daughter Mrs. George M. Brady of Bethesda; three grandchildren, Dr. William Louis Amoroso III of Potomac, Rodi von Barby and Andrea von Barby Patterson of Colorado; six step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren. Born November 21, 1940, in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Charles "Butt" and Evelyn Rheubottom. He was the husband of Mary Mabe-Rheubottom of Sykesville. He had been employed by the Baltimore Luggage Company, Henryton Center and London Fog. He was well known throughout the area for his talent of playing the piano and organ. He was the organist for many churches which included White Rock and Fairview United Methodist Churches. He was also involved in a band known around Maryland as Everyday People. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, his family and friends. He lived life to the fullest. Thomas A. "Tom" Roberts Mr. Thomas Allen Roberts, 53, of Frederick and formerly of Darnestown, died Dec. 31, 2003, in Bountiful, Utah. Born Feb. 13, 1950, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, he was the son of the late Charles U. and Amy R. Roberts. Mr. Roberts was a graduate of Gaithersburg High School and lived most of his life in the Darnestown area. Survivors include one brother, William C. Roberts of Mount Airy. Herbert Vernan Ross Herbert Vernan Ross, 88, of Cranford, N.J., died on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at the Howard County General Hospital, Columbia, Md. Born on December 22, 1915, in Elizabeth, N.J., he was the third of 11 children of the late James and Madeline Fischer Ross, Sr. He was the husband of 57 years of Anne Warga Ross. He was the vice-president of International Matex Tank Terminal (IMTT) in Bayonne, N.J., until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the Financial Executive Institute and American Financial Association. As a child he was a member of the First Presbyterian youth group, the YMCA, Boy Scouts and had a newspaper and magazine route. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1935, and lettered in cross-country and wrestling. In 1937, he received his AA degree from Union Junior College in Roselle. A 1940 graduate of University College night school (now Rutgers University) with a double major in business administration and accounting, he attended Columbia University for graduate studies in finance. He began his career working at Wilson Jones in Elizabeth, N.J. and later joined the public accounting firm of Sperry Gyroscope in Manhatten. In 1944, he enlisted in the US Army. A veteran of WWII, he was an officer in the 1st and 3rd Infantry in the Transportation Division as a Second Lieutenant. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After retirement, Mr. Ross was a very active member at Rutgers , serving on the alumni board and Presidential Search committee. He was a volunteer tax accountant for the elderly in Cranford, N.J. He was one of the founding fathers, 50 years ago, of the Rutgers Club of Cranford-Scholarship Program, which still provides scholarships to Cranford High school graduates who attend Rutgers University. He was a member of Trinity Church for over 50 years; a Vestry member, Boy Scout & Youth Leader, and on the Sunday School development committee. He is a past Grand Master of Azure Lodge, and a member of the Clark American Legion. He lived in Cranford for 56 years, prior to living with his daughter in Maryland, since 2003. His hobbies were skiing, running, golf, swimming, reading, gardening and especially his family. Surviving in addition to his wife are son Douglas; daughters Linda Ann Dolin, Janet Susan Laycock and Virginia Ross Pecca; two brothers and their wives, Charles and Marie and George and Ann; 7 grandchildren and 4 great- grandchilderen. Mr. Rice was owner of Concrete Supply Corporation in Silver Spring. He also owned a farm in Cumberland where he raised crops and animals. Wagoner Simpson, who preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 1986. He resided in Baltimore & Baltimore County before moving to Mount Airy, where he was a farmer for many years. He was a crane operator for Arundel Crane and retired to farming. He was a veteran of World War II and was wounded in Europe.
