The family received friends at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, Sykesville, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday. A funeral liturgy was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Louis Catholic Church, Clarksville. Interment is in the church cemetery. Marie Funk Marie L. Funk, 92, of Mount Airy died Saturday, May 29, at Collingswood Nursing Home, Rockville. She was the wife of the late Joseph B. Funk, who died in 1991. Born on September 9, 1911, in Valley Stream, Long Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Daniel F. and Marie LeBeller Hannon. Mrs. Funk was a secretary for the city of Valley Stream N.Y. Surviving are three daughters, Joan Kellinger of Mount Airy, Marianne Cruz and husband Richard of Holbrook, N.Y. and Elizabeth Suzuki and husband Robert of Mountain View, Cal.; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Barry Scherer Barry Raymond Scherer, 51 of Mount Airy died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Carroll Hospital Center. He was the husband of Denise Ann Vidi Scherer. He was born October 19, 1952, in Baltimore, the son of Robert Raymond Scherer of Glen Arm and the late Mary Barry Scherer. Mr. Scherer was a 1970 graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. After graduating from Poly Mr. Scherer went to work for the FBI where he received training as a finger print technician. In 1975 he began working for the State of Maryland as a finger print technician and also as a police communications operator with the state police where he meet his wife. In 1984 Mr. Scherer left the state police and began his career with the State Highway Administration Office of Real Estate. Mr. Scherer loved camping, traveling and history. Surviving in addition to his wife and father are 2 daughters, Nicole M. and Katie M. Scherer, both of Mount Airy; 2 sisters and 1 brother, father-in-law Nilo Vidi, numerous other in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother. A Funeral Liturgy will be said on Friday, June 4, 2004. at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, in Libertytown, with Fr. John Dietzenbach officiating. Winfield, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with a Christian Wake Services at 7:30 p.m. Millie Merle Taylor Millie Merle Newton Taylor, 92, formerly of Woodbine, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick. Born December 1, 1911, in Blanchard, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Karl and Nellie Miller Newton. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 66 years, Tom Albert Taylor. She was a 1929 graduate of Dover High School in Dover, Ohio. She completed her education at Massillon City Hospital School of Nursing, Massillon, Ohio, in 1933. Her 43-year career as a registered nurse included general and private duty in Frederick, and operating room supervisor at Springfield State Hospital in Sykesville, and nursing home administrator and supervisor at Henryton State Hospital. She was a member of the State of Maryland's first sponsored class of nursing home administration. After her retirement, she was able to devote more time to her needlework and gardening. The azalea gardens that she and her husband planted at their Woodbine home were always open to and enjoyed by all who passed by their home. Her quilting skills earned her many ribbons from local shows. She particularly enjoyed making all white quilts and she became known as the White Quilt Lady. When not quilting, she also enjoyed crocheting and, in her last years, especially knitting baby caps for the Frederick Memorial Hospital nursery. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Jeanette Taylor of Santa Barbara, Cal., Jan and Rose Anne Taylor of Valkaria, Flor. and Tom Jr. and Linda Taylor of Malabar, Flor.; daughter Dianne Cleveland of Frederick, daughter-in- law Elaine Taylor of Mount Airy; brothers and sisters-in-law Tracy and Guyda Newton and Clarence and Maxine Newton, both of Dover, Ohio; 18 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her son, James Taylor, by her son-in-law William A. Cleveland, by her sister, Alice E. Brown and by her brother Robert Newton. Graveside services were held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. from Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Marriottsville with Pastor Scott Duffey officiating. Barnes, 82, of Winfield, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Lorien Nursing Home in Mount Airy. He was born April 14, 1922, in Winfield, the son of the late John Stem Barnes and the late Grace Pickett Barnes. He was the husband of Bernice Shipley Barnes of Winfield for 62 years, which they loved to spend the winters in Florida. He was an inspector for Retail Credit Company and an appraiser for the State Department of Assessments. He was a Lifetime Charter member of the Westminster Elks #2277. He was a member of the Westminster Moose Lodge #1381. He was a former charter and past member of the Taylorsville-Winfield Lions Club. He attended Ebenezer and Taylorsville United Methodist churches. He enjoyed farming and gardening; vegetables and tomatoes. Survivors besides his wife include his children, John S. & Gloria F. Barnes of Winfield and Jeffrey L. and Sylvia A. Barnes of Finksburg; brother Charles W. Barnes of Winfield; 5 grandchildren, Darren, Scott, Cindy, Matthew and Stephanie Barnes; 7 great grandchildren and 4 nephews, Kenneth Seitz, Charles Barnes, Jr., Douglass Seitz and Edward Seitz. Michelle Beavers Michelle Ann Beavers, 60, of Mount Airy and formerly of Chincoteague, Va., died suddenly Friday, June 4, 2004, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 21, 1943 in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Dorothy Gertrude Brim Hart of Chincoteague and the late Charles Ray Hart, Jr.. Mrs. Beavers was a homemaker. Beside her mother, survivors include three daughter, Pam Thompson of Mount Airy, Dawn Diaz of College Park and Kathy Blake of Fishing Creek; a son, Michael J. Beavers, Jr. of Edgewater; two brothers, John (Pat) Hart of Mount Airy and Charles (Chic) Hart of Chincoteague; 18 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her companion of 25 years, Samuel Yeagers, in February of 2004. Services will be held at the convenience of the family in Chincoteague. Kathryn Dennison Ms. Kathryn Elizabeth Dennison, 62, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at her home in Lewisdale, Maryland. Born Sept. 11, 1941, in Frederick, she was a daughter of the late Perry C. and Sarah M. Snyder Lewis. Mr. Dennison had been employed as a program specialist at the U.S. Department of Energy. She had been a government worker for 43 years. She was a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church at Browningsville. She was a volunteer at the Damascus Senior Center. Surviving her are two children, Loretta K. Wade of Westminster and Michael L. Dennison and his wife Shauna of St. Simons Island, Georgia; four grandchildren, Danielle Poe, Kelly Poe, Christopher Wade and Morgan Dennison; one great granddaughter, Makayla Lowery; four brothers and sisters, Bonnie Frederick of Germantown, Terry Sebolt of Boonsboro, Ronnie Lewis of Middleburg, Florida, and Mickey Lewis of Middletown. Memorial services were held June 9 at the Olin L. Molesworth P. A., Funeral Home, Damascus, with the Rev. Michael Leftwich officiating. Interment is in Bethesda United Methodist Church, Browningsville. Richard Hewitt Jr. Richard C. Hewitt, Jr., 84 ,of Frederick, formerly of Old Liberty Road, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at North Hampton Manor Nursing Home, Frederick. Mr. Hewitt was born May 13, 1920, in Sykesville, the son of the late Richard C. Hewitt, Sr. and the late Bessie Mae Naill Hewitt. Mr. Hewitt served in W.W.II in the South Pacific from 1941 to 1946 in the United States Army. He was a member of the South Carroll VFW Post 9952. He is survived by sister and brother-in-law, Claudia M. Goss of Walkersville and Franklin G. Goss. Services are private Arrangements were made by Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., Winfield. George Coleman Smith George Coleman Smith, 75, of Damascus, died June 4, 2004, at his home. Born Oct. 29, 1928, in Branford, Fla., he was the son of the late Marvin Loami and Ruby Coleman Smith. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dolores Naehr Smith. He served as an Army officer in the Korean War with the 187th Airborne Division. He was a member of the Korean Veterans Association Chapter 142 in Frederick, the VFW Post 10076, and the American Legion Post 171 in Damascus. He worked with the Atomic Energy Commission as an accountant from 1956 until 1968 and for NASA until he retired in 1978. He owned Damascus Tax and Accounting Services for many years. Mr. Smith was an active member of the Damascus Lions Club District 22C. He was awarded the "Lions of the Years" trophy for 1998-1999. He was involved with the organizing of Damascus Ecumenical Laymen's Association and Damascus Help. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Damascus and was a choir member for many years. He enjoyed acting in musicals with the Damascus Theatre Company. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, golfing, genealogy and card games. Survivors in addition to his wife include five daughters, Joan Smith and husband Al of Damascus, Diane Monk and husband David of Stafford, Va., Cynthia Hitchcock and husband Joseph of Frederick, Beverly Lambert and husband Timothy of Mount Airy and Anita Cheadle of Damascus; two sons, G. Michael Smith and wife Suzanne of Mount Airy and Lawrence "Rick" Smith and wife Angie of Shelbyville, Ky.; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Jenks of Augusta, Ga.; 22 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Hugh Smith and Marvin Leon Smith, and sister Alice Rae Smith. Mass was celebrated Tuesday. Burial was at All Soul's Cemetery in Germantown. Elsie Hall Davis Mrs. Elsie Hall Davis, 95, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at her home in Florence, Md. She was the wife of the late H. Dade Davis. Born September 4, 1908, in Newcomb (Royal Oak), Maryland, she was the daughter of the late G. Albert and Elizabeth Peters Hall. Mrs. Davis graduated from Easton High School in 1925. She was also a graduate of Salisbury State College and the University of Maryland. She taught at Florence School, Poplar Springs School and Lisbon Elementary School. When she was appointed principal at Lisbon Elementary and Junior High, she became the first woman principal in Howard County. Mrs. Davis was an active member of the Maryland State Teachers Association, past president of the Howard County Teachers Association, and a member of the Howard Education Association of Retired Teachers. She was a member and past president Landen Chapter- Delta Kappa Gamma, and a life member of M.P.T.A. Mrs. Davis was a volunteer member of the Howard County Board of Social Services, and a member of the Board of Trustees of Union Chapel, Glenwood. She was a member of Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was very active with the Sunday School since 1935. Surviving her are two daughters, Elsie Dade Sartorio, of Cockeysville and Lisabeth D. Little, of Woodbine; a sister, Jessie H. Eure of Royal Oak, Maryland; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church. Linda Lewis Linda A. Bennett Lewis, 90 of Mount Airy, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was wife of the late Eugene Francis Lewis who passed away in 1983. Mrs. Lewis was born August 30, 1913, in Howard County, Md., daughter of the late Charles Edward and late Mary Elizabeth Magers Bennett. Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker and took great pride in her vegetable garden, canning and making clothing. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society and a life member of Mountain View United Methodist Church in Purdum, Md. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Doris M. and George Woodfield of Mount Airy; brother Leroy Bennett, 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by 3 sisters, Edna Reedy, Florrie Gilbert and Addie Porter; 1 brother, Russell Bennett and one daughter, Norma Lee Watkins. Gillespie, 76, of Kensington died June 13, 2004, at her son's residence in Mount Airy. Born July 4, 1927, in Buffalo, N. Y., she was the daughter of the late William and Ailleen Hone Wait. She was the wife of Jack A. Gillespie for 53 years. Mrs. Gillespie was a homemaker and a volunteer with the American Red Cross, the American Lung Association, TRIO and she was a member of the Kensington Lions Club. Mrs. Gillespie started the first Breathing Club in Montgomery County in Kensington. She and her husband were on the Kensington Centennial Committee and were in charge of the Kensington Labor Day Parade for a number of years. In addition to her husband and her mother, Mrs. Gillespie is survived by two sons, Jay L. Gillespie and his wife Janet of Gaithersburg and Jack A. Gillespie II and his wife Jan of Mount Airy; an adopted son, Nesar Nusraty and his wife Soryla of Potomac; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; 2 brothers-in-law, Ronald Gillespie and his wife Rose of Texas and Richard Gillespie and his wife Kathy of Fallon, Nev.; a sister-in-law, Edith Ann Harrison and her husband Lloyd of Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services and burial will be held at 2 p.m. on July 13 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Arrangements were made by Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick. Ernest Moore Mr. Ernest N. Moore, 69, of Mount Airy, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born on January 8, 1935, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Hubert G. and Ethel R. Holland Moore. He was an electrician with IBEW Local 26, retiring in 1997 after more than 30 years service. Mr. Moore served in the U.S. Air Force. He enjoyed spending time with family. Surviving are 4 children, Kevin Michael Moore of West Virginia, Troy Garner Moore and wife Susan of Mount Airy, Kathleen Jo Watkins and husband Dean of Mount Airy and Shawn Patrick Moore and wife Tricia of Frederick; 8 grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Michael, Josh, Brady, Logan, Kyle, Devyn, and Kay Lynn; and 4 brothers, Mickey Moore, Joe Moore, Charlie Moore and Robert Moore. Funeral services were held on Monday, June 21, 2004, at Stauffer Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The Rev. Darren Siebert of the 1st Baptist Church of Green Valley officiated.
