Horst Mildred Elizabeth Horst, 89, of Sykesville, died on Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Golden Age Guest Home, Sykesville. Born August 2, 1914, in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Amy Rice Kencel. She was the wife of the late Arthur Horst, Sr. She had been a retail salesman for the Hecht Company, in Baltimore for 32 years. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Arthur, Jr. and June Horst of Woodbine, sister Hilda Elliott of Glen Burnie and grandsons Robert and Bruce Horst, both of Sykesville. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Ashlee, Ryan, Derick, Dalton, and Luke. She was predeceased by her brothers, James Kencel and Albert Kencel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Rd., Sykesville. Officiating will be chaplain, Barbara Sears. Interment will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Herman "Shorty" Keller Herman "Shorty" William Keller, 80, of Finksburg, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at his daughter's home in Finksburg. He was the husband of Alice Emma Cookson Keller. He was born February 5, 1924 in Moundsville, West Virginia, the son of the late William Keller and late Myrtle M. Kinney Keller. He worked as a farmer throughout his life. Mr. Keller served in the army during WWII as a sargeant in the 168th Engineer Combat Battalion and in the Battle of Normandy. He was a member of Mt. Airy American Legion Gold Star Post 191. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Mike Watts of Virginia, son and daughter-in-law Raymond and Debbie Keller of Mount Airy, daughter Kathryn J. Keller of Finksburg, daughter and son-law Barbara K. and Sam Duvall of Mount Airy; 6 grandchildren, Lisa Farley, John Keller, Ray Keller, Jr., David Watts, Matthew Watts and Chris Duvall; 3 great grandchildren, Shawn McCauley, Richard Farley, Robert Farley; and 2 great-great grandchildren, Caitlyn Keller and Morgan Watts. Thelma Jenkins Thelma Louise Jenkins, 90 Of Fairhaven in Sykesville, formerly of Woodbine, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster. Born September 8, 1913, in Woodbine, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Late Carrie M. Bloom Condon. She was the wife of James "Jim" A. Jenkins, who died in 1986. She had retired from Springfield Hospital Center where she was a Licensed Practical Nurse and later worked in the Rehabilitation Department as an occupational therapist. She was a member of Morgan Chapel United Methodist Church in Woodbine. Surviving are daughters Joan A. Jennings of Deltonia, Florida, and Dorothy L. Brown of Sykesville; brother Ralph Condon of Woodbine; 6 grandchildren, 8 great- grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Arthur S. Perkins, Sr., 90, of Westminster, died on Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Casey House in Rockville, and previously living for 5 months at the Golden Years Group Home. Mr. Perkins was born October 28, 1913, in Sykesville, the son of the late William and Amanda Austin Perkins. He was the husband of the late Inez Dotson Perkins. Mr. Perkins received his education at the White Rock School in Sykesville. He retired from the United States Army in 1945 and served in WWII. Mr. Perkins worked at Neumann Bookstore in Westminster part time and was a postman in Westminster for the United States Postal Service. Mr. Perkins retired from the post office in 1978. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church in Taylorsville He enjoyed reading, working around his house and visiting with family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. His example was an inspiration to all who knew him. Surviving him are his children, Aaron C. Perkins, Jr. and wife Yvonne of Randallstown, Larry Perkins of Arizona, Terry Perkins of Rockville, Wayne Perkins and Wife Gladys of Westminster, Jacqueline and husband Tommy W. Morris Martin Morris Morelock Martin, 79, of Westminster, died Tuesday evening at the Carroll Hospital Center. He was a recent resident of the Carroll Lutheran Village. Born September 20, 1924, in Westminster, he was the son of the late Morris and Edith Bish Martin. He was the husband of the late Marion V. Humbert Martin, who died in 1974. They had been married for 25 years. He was a life long farmer and local realtor. He was a member of the Boumi Temple, Western Maryland Shrine Club, Past Master of Door to Virtue AF & AM Masonic Lodge, Past Worthy Patron of Door to Virtue Eastern Star, The Beehive Club, Isaac Walton League, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Westminster Moose. He was a loyal Democrat. He was also a member of St. Benjamin's Lutheran Church. He is survived by daughter H. Wimberly, 53, of Monrovia, died on Monday, July 19, 2004, in Laurel. He was the husband of Ethel R. Davidson Wimberly, his wife of 19 years. Born on July 14, 1951, in Hyattsville he was the son of the late John Kimbrough and Helen Lousie Wilson Wimberly. Mr. Wimberly was a building engineer with GDR Management in Beltsville. He was an avid NASCAR and Washington Redskins fan, but most of all he loved to ride his Harley and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. She was the wife of the late George A. White Jr. Mrs. White was born February 21, 1921, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Herbert Madison and Katherine Huson Day. Mrs. White was a church secretary at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rockdale, Md. under then Pastor Donald Haas. She was a veteran of the U.S. Army WAC during WW II. She worked for the Federal Aviation Administration for almost 20 years and then retired. In later years she also helped Pastor David Schaffer at St. Benjamin's Church in Westminster and helped the Rev. Jimmi Schwartz at Carroll Lutheran Village where she was a resident for the last 14 years. She was a member of VFW # 521 Owings Mills. She touched so many lives with laughter and her jokes. Surviving her are sister-in-law Toni Day, of Delmar, Calif., nephew Kevin Day of Solana Beach, Calif., niece Robin Edwards of San Bernardino, Calif., one great nephew and two great nieces. He had retired as a forklift technician for McCall Handling. He was an Army veteran during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post #224 in Sykesville. She was born May 3, 1936, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Jacob Wilson Jenkins and the late Eleanor Jenkins. She was a homemaker and a manicurist. She loved shopping, dancing and oil painting. Evelyn Pickett Evelyn Virginia Walker Pickett, 85, of Poplar Brook Farm in Poplar Springs, died on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Merhle Purdum Pickett who died in 1993. Mrs. Pickett was born and raised on Mendelssohn Terrace Farm in Browningsville. She was born on July 13, 1919, and was the daughter of the late Ethel Virginia Day Walker and Eugene Samuel Wesley Walker. Growing up, she helped dress chickens and pick vegetables for the family's weekly trips to the Farmer's Market in Bethesda. Her special job, though, was to pick and arrange flowers to sell at the market. She continued her love for flowers throughout her life, taking much joy in her many flowerbeds, flower boxes, hanging plants, and violets. Music was another huge part of her life. She studied voice at Hood College and sang in live performances regularly as a young adult on WFMD radio in Frederick.Mrs. Pickett also sang for countless weddings, funerals, church services, and civic group meetings. Additionally, she performed as a soloist with the Browningsville Band and for Eastern Star Prudence Chapter #95. Mrs. Pickett was employed briefly in the early 1970s as a seamstress for Peck and Peck in the Columbia Mall. She was very active with the Poplar Springs United Methodist Church, arranging and providing flowers for the church every week for many years. She also sang in the choir, assisted with MYF, and participated in the United Methodist Women. In addition to church, she was on the Women's Board of Directors for Southern States Cooperative in Woodbine. She was a member of the Howard County Farm Bureau, and was a Farm Bureau Women's Director. She also served on the Maryland Soil Conservation Auxiliary. She volunteered her assistance to Glenwood Lions Club activities, and was a leader of the Poplar Girls 4-H Club. Of utmost importance to Mrs. Pickett was her faith in God and her love of her family. She is survived by three daughters: Merhlyn Barnes and husband, William, of Woodbine; Evelyn "Jeanie" Cushwa and husband, John, of Martinsburg, West Virginia; and Ann Horner of Poplar Springs. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Melanie Merkle and husband, Bob, of Lynchburg, Va.; Sharon Leavitt and husband Stephen, of Pasadena; Valerie Barnes, of Owings Mills; Lauren Barnes, of Woodbine; John Merhle Cushwa and wife, Kristin, of Hedgesville, W.Va.; Captain Michael Cushwa and wife, Christy-Ann, of Enterprise, Alabama; Christopher Cushwa, of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and Connie Horner of Poplar Springs; one step-great-granddaughter, and three great-grandsons; two sisters- in-law, Phyllis Walker and Bootsie Walker, both of Browningsville; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and others who loved her enough to call her "Mom" or "Na-Naw Pickett." Phyllis Steimel Phyllis Ann Brueck Steimel, 57, of Westminster, died Suddenly Thursday, August 5, 2004, at her home. She was born March 3, 1947, in Baltimore, the daughter of Edward Richard Brueck and the late Catherine Marion Brueck. She was the wife of James L. Steimel. She was a radiological technologist for 37 years. She was a member of Carroll Community Church. Mrs. Watkins was a nursing assistant at Pleasant View Nursing Home. She was a 1938 graduate of Mount Airy High School. Mrs. Watkins was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Prudence Lodge #95 Order of the Eastern Star, the Mount Airy 55+ Club, Mount Airy Senior Center and the Top of the Hill Gang in Woodbine. She enjoyed flowers and loved her cats. Barwick Sr. Thomas Andrews Barwick Sr., 65m of Eldersburg, died Sunday, August 15, 2004, at Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster. Born October 24, 1938, in Thomasville, Georgia, he was the son of the late James Barwick and the late Clara Fawcette Barwick. He was the husband of Katherine Joy Barwick of Eldersburg. Mr. Barwick served in the U.S. Navy, Army National Guard 20th Special Forces Group and in the Maryland Air National Guard. He worked for the Maryland Department of General Services for 15 years, most of that time as building manager of the District Court and Multi-Service Center in Ellicott City. Born on September 3, 1905, in Glenelg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Ephriam W. and Virginia Walker. She was the wife of the late Irving L. Brown who died in 1962. She had been a homemaker. He had been a professional truck driver since the age of 19. He most recently worked for Watkins Motor Lines from which he retired after 14 years of service. He had also worked for IML Transportation. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in Vietnam.
