She was the wife of Francis Levine Gist. She was born August 6, 1927, in Westminster, the daughter of the late Harry Ambrose Nusbaum and Ida Martin Nusbaum. She retired after 29 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse for Springfield State Hospital and then worked for Senior Constant Care in Winfield for over 15 years. She was a member of Sykesville American Legion Post 223 and a life member of Westminster VFW #467 Ladies Auxialary. She enjoyed crocheting and was a member of MD Classified. She was also a member of Sykesville United Methodist Church. Surviving are son and daughter-in-law Francis W. and Karen Gist of Jarriottsville, daughter Carol R. McHale, Jr., 73, of Westminster, died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at his home. He was born April 8, 1931, in Baltimore, the son of the late Thomas M. McHale, Sr. and the late Angela Josephine Maddox McHale. He grew up on 38th Street in Waverly, Md., joined U.S.Coast Guard in 1949 with duty in Assategue, Va., and Long Beach, Calif., on the Cutter Ponchatrain. After discharge he married and moved to Randallstown, then to Marriottsville in 1968 and moved to Westminster, in 1996. He attended Cathedral Parochial School and Mt. St. Joseph High School. He was a telephone PBX repairman for C&P Telephone Co. & AT&T for 33 years. He was in the US Coast Guard Reserves 1953-1980 (Reserve Commanding Officer of Station Still Pond), Commander Catholic War Vets., MSGR Hugh Monaghan Post 736, and member of Catholic War Veterans, Coast Guard Combat War Vet., American Legion, Knight of Columbus, Mt. St. Joseph Fathers Club and Telephone Pioneers. He was the husband of Mary Catherine Furlong McHale, married April 14, 1956, at St. Phillip & James Church in Baltimore, MD He was the father of Maureen Johnson of Finksburg, Karen Sullivan of Baltimore, Michael McHale of Marriottsville, Mary Patricia Vielandi of Marriottsville, Shannon McHale of Owings Mills, and Thomas McHale III of Marriottsville. Rutherford, 91, of Carroll Lutheran Village, Westminster, died on Wednesday, August 18, 2004. Born September 25, 1913, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Hubert and Annie Phillips Rutherford. He was the husband of 67 years of Ruth L. Terry Rutherford of Westminster. He had worked as a salesman and credit manager in the trucking industry for the former Atlantic Coast Freight Line and Boss-Linco. He had been an avid fan of the former Baltimore Colts. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rockdale. He and his wife moved to Carroll Lutheran Village in 1997. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter Joan R. Flores of Dayton, N.J.; grandchildren Karen, Sharon, Kimberly and Melanie and great-grandchildren: Stephen, Ryan, Danielle and Nicholas. He was predeceased by daughter, Joan R. Anthony "Tony" Thomas Anthony Carroll "Tony" Thomas, 35, of Hagerstown, died Friday, August 20, 2004, at Bon Secours Hospital, Baltimore. He was born May 26, 1969, in Westminster, the son of mother and stepfather Ronald and Ellen Carole Hall Lyles of Hagerstown. He was an LPN at Springfield State Hospital in Sykesville. Survivors besides his mother and step-father include his son Anthony J. Lyles, aunt and uncle Michael and Anita Hall; numerous other uncles, half brothers, and half sisters and cousins. He will also be missed by devoted friend Towanda Wright. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Hilda and Alfred Hall. Latimer Watkins Mr. J Latimer Watkins, 95, of Damascus, died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary Allsip Watkins who died December 29, 1989. Mr. Watkins was born August 13, 1909, in Monrovia, a son of the late John S. and Melissa Day Watkins. He attended the one room school in Kemptown where he completed 8 grades, then transferring to Mount Airy High School where he graduated in the class of 1926. He went on to attend Western Maryland College where he played the clarinet in the ROTC Band and college orchestra. He sang in the Choir and Glee Club. His senior year he was promoted to second in command of the ROTC Band, as a Cadet 1st Lieutenant. He graduated "Honorable Mention" with a BA Degree in the class of 1930. The following year he took a post graduate course in Physical Chemistry at George Washington University. In December of 1931 he took a job with the F. W. Woolworth Co., in Washington, D.C., and soon he was promoted to the store on Eastern Avenue in Baltimore as assistant manager. From Baltimore he was transferred to the Market Street Store in Philadelphia. From Philadelphia he was appointed manager of the Mt. Holly, New Jersey store. He managed this store for 7 years. While in Mt. Holley he met and married his late wife Mary in January of 1948. In March of 1048 he resigned his position with the Woolworth Company and moved back to Kemptown. On September 6, 1948, he opened his own store in Mount Airy, Watkins 5 & 10 cent store. It was located in the Nichodemus Building on Main Street. He ran the store at this location until 1958 when he moved to the recently purchased Hood store further north on Main Street. Here in the newly remodeled store he was able to increase his business, and better serve his customers. Mr. Watkins sold the store in September 1976 and retired. After his retirement he and Mrs. Watkins took an extended bus trip each year. They installed a Conn Theater Pipe Organ in their home and joined the Potomac Valley Theater Organ Society. They attended organ recitals once each month either in the home of a member, or in a theater where a member played. Following his wife's death he decided to stay alone in his home. He had his lawn and garden to care for as well as his music T.V.. and the fall football games to keep him occupied. His life was made much easier by the help of two of his former employees Arlene Tressler and Rose Harne. They never lost touch with him. After his last illness Arlene and her family were constant caregivers to him for the past 20 months, and he will surely be missed by them. Surviving him are a sister-in-law Ruth Watkins of Ellicott City; three nieces Karen Watkins of New Market, Mardelle Fish and Susan Fisher both of Indiana, Pa.; and four nephews: Wayne Watkins and his wife Sandy of Mount Airy; Richard Watkins and his wife Olivia of Woodbine; Mark Watkins and his wife Jean of Finksburg, and Robert Fish and his wife Genevieve of Indiana, Pa. He will also be missed by special friends Arlene Tressler and family of Frederick; and Rose Harne and family of Mount Airy. Mr. Watkins was preceded in death by his only brother Roland Watkins on November 1999, and nephew Walter Fish. Services were held Saturday, August 21 at the Olin L. Molesworth P .A. Whitcomb, 70 of Sykesville died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at St. Joseph Medical Center, Baltimore. She was the wife of 38 years of John E. Whitcomb. She was born August 16, 1934 in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Lewis F. Schaffer and late Martha Louise Naperski Schaffer. Mrs. Whitcomb was a homemaker, a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Community, Eldersburg, and enjoyed collecting crystal. She was a homemaker and a member of Locust Grove Church of the Brethren in Mount Airy. She was the wife of the late Robert Urner Englar, Sr. Survivors include her sons, Timothy M. Englar and Jack M. Doris Ridgely officiating Interment will be in Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery. Donald Wilson Donald Roby Wilson, 82, of Mount airy, died on Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at his residence. He was the husband of Joan Field Wilson. They were married 50 years. Born March 30, 1922, in Fairland, he was the son of the late Roy Lee and Carrie frank Roby Wilson. Along with his sister, Mr. Wilson operated Family Cleaners in Kensington from 1949 to 1965. He then worked as a home improvement contractor from 1965 to 1991. Mr. Wilson served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was one of the original founders of the Mount Airy Baptist Church in 1967. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Kensington Lions Club and the Black Angus Cattle Association. He enjoyed sports, following the careers of Ted Williams, Willie Mays and Joe Gibbs and was a very patriotic man. Most of all, he enjoyed raising black angus cattle on his family farm since the early 1960s. Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, David T. Wilson and wife Denise of Knoxville, Tenn., Jefferson T. Wilson and wife terry of Mount Airy; Steven Judd Wilson and wife Christie of Hagerstown; and Penny J. Stork and husband Chuck of Baltimore. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; one sister, Audrey Finnance and husband Ernie of Daytona Beach, FL. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters. Branick Jeffrey Scott Branick, 49, of Sykesville, died Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at his home. Born August 23, 1922, in Westminster, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Ann Idzi. She was the wife of 66 years of John Frederick "Poppy" Horner of Sykesville. She had been a homemaker for most of her life. Surviving in addition to her husband are son and daughter-in-law John M. and Charlotte Horner of Dundalk, daughters and sons-in-law Joanne and George Knapp of Dundalk and Kathleen and Dennis McCrabe of Sykesville; brothers Marion Idzi of Dundalk and Theodore Idzi of Highlandtown, and sisters Dorothy Zorn of Essex and Theresa Lambert of Bel Air. Samuel David Lewis, Jr. Mr. Samuel David Lewis, Jr., 62, of Frederick, died Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Callie Sue Lewis. Born August 1, 1942, in Cedar Bluff, Virginia, he was a son of the late Samuel D. Lewis, Sr., and Lona Olivia Lowe Lewis Hearn. Mr. Lewis began working as a farmer in Cedar Grove on the Robert Tregoning farm for more than 20 years. He worked in excavating for Pleasant Excavating, Clarksburg, for 15 years and then for Daniel R. Moxley in Frederick for 5 years. In the 1970s he belonged to the Heart of Maryland Tractor Pullers Association. He was an avid fan of horse and auto racing, football and baseball, and spending time with his family. Surviving besides his wife are two children, Barbara Ann Hilton and her husband Gary of Mount Airy and Samuel David Lewis, III, and his wife Lisa of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia; three granddaughters, Sara Lynn Lewis, Samantha Ashley Lewis and Susan Marie Hilton; mother-in-law Donnie Josie Vean Wright; and numerous brothers and sisters. Sam Poole Sr. Sam Poole Sr., 84, of Ijamsville, died Sept. 5, 2004. Born Nov. 6, 1919 in Dawsonville, he was the son of the late Martin Luther and Leola Savage Poole. He was the husband of Virginia A. Poole. Mr. Poole served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He owned Sam Poole Heating and Air Conditioning until his retirement. Born November 27, 1980, at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. he is the son of Zane Shephard Clayton & Dorothy Marie Lewis Clayton of Mount Airy. He was a 1998 graduate of South Carroll High School and a member of the National Honor Society. He received a degree in Emergency Health Services from the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus. He was an employee of the Frederick County Fire and Rescue Services. He was a lieutenant with the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department, where he was as a firefighter and paramedic:. Currently he was also employed in the Cardiac Department at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. He had been awaiting a heart transplant. Liam was born October 9, 2003. He loved music and playing with his stuffed animals. Cynthia Ann Putnam Cynthia Ann Putnam, 70, of Brunswick, Maine, and formerly of Maryland for 30 years, died September 13, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. Born January 1, 1934, in Lowell, Mass, she graduated from Chelmsford High School in 1951 and cum laude from Lesley College, Cambridge, Mass., in 1956. She taught elementary school in Chelmsford and Orange, Mass., and in Montgomery County, Md., until 1980. She then joined the National Flood Insurance Program, retiring in 1993. Mrs. Putnam was married June 15, 1957, in Lowell,, Mass., to Paul Putman who survives her. Other survivors are son Clayton and his wife Cindy of Mount Airy; son Robert and his wife Deanna of Mount Airy, son Glen and his wife Judye of New Market, son Stephen and his wife Martha of Suffolk, Va.; seven granddaughters, one grandson; two sister, Bobbi Merkl of Highland Beach, Fla., and Janice Clarke of Naples, Fla. Shifflett, his wife of 35 years. Born May 13, 1951, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, he is the son of Dorothy Mae Payne Shifflett of Mount Airy and the late Franklin Shifflett, Sr. Mr. Shifflett was employed as a clerk for the last 35 years with A&P/Super Fresh food stores and he was a substitute bus driver for Montgomery County Public Schools for 20 years. Surviving besides his wife and mother are two sons, Terry Shifflett of Damascus and Daryl Shifflett and his wife Shanyne of Damascus; four sisters, Sandra Cooper and her husband Robert of Buckeystown, Brenda Stream and her husband Raymond of Smithsburg, Lorrie Hozhabri and her husband Farzan of Mount Airy and Deana Ramsburg and her husband Charles of Frederick; father-in-law Orvil Magers of Mount Airy and sister­in-law Brenda Kay Souders and her husband James of Martinsburg, W.Va. Born on March 19, 1921, in Sioux City, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Paul E. and Lena Chemelevskaya Bogdanow. Mrs. Parker was an administrative assistant for the U. S. Government in Washington, D.C. She loved classical music and playing the piano. Mrs. Parker also enjoyed sewing and loved her pets. In her younger years she was quite the tennis player. Her charming wit will be missed by those who knew her. Surviving are a daughter, Cheryl Leonard and husband Martin of Aguanga, Calif.; a son, Jerome E. Parker of Sioux City; 2 granddaughters, Amy Dodson and husband Thomas of Boonsboro and Nina E. Mento of Aspen, Col.; a grandson, Brandon "Brodie" Mento of California; 3 sisters, Vera Bogdanow of Frederick, Lana Stephen of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Leda Bogdanow of Emerson, Neb.; and a sister-in-law, Orva Bogdanow of Salt Lake City, Utah.
