Quabbletown, New Jersey, 27 Feb 1777. Rec’d by the hand of Col. John Boyd, James Ramsay’s commission dated March 1776, being ensign in Capt. William Scott’s company, Flying Camp, 2nd Regiment, Pennsylvania line, and he hath served his country the above time with credit in his office, but through indisposition of body, is obliged to resign and this state[?] be his legal discharge, given under my hand this date, Nathaniel Greene, Major General of the forces of the United States of America. Col. John Boyd of the above regiment.” State of Maryland, Cecil County, April Court 1818: “James Ramsay, a citizen of the United States, and at this time residing in Cecil County and State of Maryland, doth declare that on or about the 1st of March 1776, he enlisted under Capt. William Scott of the Flying Camp in the 2nd regiment of Col. Clott’s [?] and 1st brigade, General Ewing, and that he served as ensign in Capt. Scott’s company till the 1st of January 1777, and at the time last mentioned, the brigade of General Ewing was paraded at Trenton for a discharge, and General Washington harangued the brigade and called for volunteers, and he, the said Ramsay, volunteered, stilled holding his commission as ensign under Capt. John Brown and Col. John Boyd, and continued in the service, until by indisposition of body, he was compelled to resign, about the 1st of March 1777; and that from his age and infirmity, is unable to support himself and family, not having any other property than a few articles of household furniture.” “Then appeared in open court, James Ramsey, and made oath on the Holy Evangel of Almighty God, that the several facts and circumstances stated in the above declaration are true. April 9, 1818. Sworn to in open court, test, Jamy Sewell” “To the honorable Judge of Cecil County Court: “The petition of James Ramsay, a citizen of the state of Maryland and Cecil county, respectfully showeth to your honor that he is entitled to a pension under an act to allow a pension to all enlisted soldiers either in the land or naval service. Whereupon, your petitioner prays that such pension may be allowed to him as the said law presents? On the conditions specified after complying with all the requisites of the said law. James Ramsay.” “It appears to the satisfaction of the Cecil County Court that the within named James Ramsay served in the Revolutionary War and the members thereof hereby certify and transmit to the War Department of the United States the testimony laid before them by the said James Ramsay in support of his intended application for a pension under the late act of Congress. 9 April 1818.” [Signature illegible] Written in different handwriting: “#9 months, and that he is in reduced circumstances and” [the rest is illegible].
