Most of the surnames researched are associated with this family either by marriage or land ownership. Other surnames are recorded because of the listing of heirs if the ancestor died intestate. Charles Baker of Charles County, MD Escheat land – head of Wicomico River on 21 June 1570 granted to William Coombs (Coomes?) for 150 acres who sold to John Allen and by him mortgaged to Thomas Gerrard who sold to Richard Robinson, the petitioner’s grandfather, who together with the petitioner’s father and ancestors have possessed the same for 60 years, so they wish to purchase the escheat land. Penelope Beale of Charles County State of Maryland, whereas Penelope Beale of Charles County, widow, mother and natural guardian to Allanson Ford Beale, Martha Tennison Beale, Mary Penn Beale and Penelope Ann Beale, children of Charles Beale, late deceased, by her petition to the honorable, the Chancellor, did set forth that the said Charles Beale had in his life time, to wit, on the 12 January 1793 surveyed for him a tract of land called “Green Brier”, lying in Charles county and containing one acre, one rood, and ten perches by virtue of a warrant for 5 acres obtained by him, the 3 of October 1792 as appears by the certificate thereof returned to the land office. That the said Charles Beale departed this life in the year 1793 without having made a will, leaving the first three mentioned children and Charles Beale infants. That the said Charles Beale, the infant, died shortly after his father and Penelope Ann Beale was born after the decease of her father. That the equitable interest in the said land being now vested to the children above mentioned and the composition due on the certificate thereof fully paid, the petitioner prayed that a patent may be issued. Chancellor ordered that a patent be hereby granted to Alanson Ford Beale, Martha Tennison Beale, Mary Penn Beale and Penelope Ann Beale. Granted 21 August 1794. MD LW&P 1792-1795, FHC Film 0013125, page 419. John Baptist Boardman – Charles County 52 acres of land – assigned from Thomas Holland out of warrant for 100 acres 23 August 1720. Tract of land called “Boarman’s (sic) Intention” lying in Zachia Swamp next unto the east side thereof.. MD LW&P 1727-1731, FHC film 0013083, page 39. Col. William Bruce - Charles county A special warrant to resurvey tract called “Bowle’s Purchase, originally 10 November 1733 granted William Cole and Rebecca Tyer for 483 acres. MDLW&P, 1801-1808, FHC Film 0013131, page 25 John Chandler, Charles County Land now escheat, tract of land called Capock’s Log?, originally on 10 October 1668 granted Charles Capock of Charles County. 100 acres another tract of land called “Lamon”. Purchase originally 30 July 1674 granted to John Capock, 100 acres. Another tract called Hispaniola on 20 August 1675 granted unto John Lomair of Charles county, 100 acres (“Lamon” may be “Lomair”). John Lomair conveyed land to John Capock on 10 March 1680 and he died leaving no will. Land became right of Sarah Capock, his only daughter by whose death, without heirs, the land became escheat. Land granted to Chandler, 3 November 1722. MD LW&P 1727-1731, FHC film 0013141 William Coomes of Charles County 20 acres About two acres of the above land is cultivated and has on for improvements one dwelling house, sixteen feet square with an outside chimney and a closet. The lower floor plan….five years old, clabboard wood, one kitchen 10 feet square with an inside chimney, two years old, one hen house 10 feet long, set on loggs about three feet from the g……., one tobaco house 30 feet long, 22 feet wide, corigetted (sic) two years old and about ….perches/parcels of fence. MD LW&P 1739-1747, FHC Film 13141 Clement Craycraft/Craycroft, Petitioner Petitioner’s grandfather, Ignatius Craycraft of Charles County had on 1 April 1707, surveyed and laid out for him land called “The Inclosure” (sic), 575 acres, 500 acres by consignment from William Joseph, part of a warrant for 1, 770 acres granted said William Joseph 17 January 1706 and 75 acres by assignment from Luke Gardiner. Igantius died and by last will and testament left land to John Craycraft, petitioner’s father, who died before he obtained his Lordship’s Grant. Granted June 15, 1742. MD LW&P1739-1747, FHC Film 0013141 Samuel Deale/Teale AA County Allen Davis –“Allen’s Addition”, Charles County, East side of the Patuxent adjoining “Allen’s Grove”. Tract of land on south side of Patuxent St. Mary’s Co. originally 1648, granted unto Cornelius Kenedy 100 acres. Kenedy died with no heirs. James Heech/Keech – land called “Hillfield” MD LW&P 1787-1790, FHC Film 0013123, page 187 Thomas Gant 1704 – Mattawoman Creek – tract lying partly in Charles county, partly in Prince George’s Co. Mattawoman Creek divides Charles and Prince George’s Co. MD LW&P 1684-1714, FHC Film 0013083, page 266 Samuel Garrett – Charles County 70 acres virtue of warrant parcel of land called “Bridgemaster” beginning bounded oaks, land near bounded trees of John Thomas called “The Bowling Green”. Granted 11 October 1731. MD LW&P 1730-1734, FHC Film 0013083, page 241 Robert Hanson of Charles County, gentleman Intermarried with Violetta, the widow and Relict of William Hoskins, late of the said county, deceased and with Walter Hanson of the said County, gentleman, who married with Elizabeth Hoskins, one of the daughters and co-heirs of the said William Hoskins, set forth that William Hoskins 8 August 1726 had resurveyed and laid out tract of land called “Harwood”, containing 1, 266 acres, lying on the West Side of Portbacco Creek. Before the patent was issued, he died intestate, leaving Violetta, his widow and two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary Hoskins. MD Land Warrants & Patents1739-1743, FHC Film 0013089, Page 111 Petition of John Slye of Charles County Petitioner’s grandfather, Robert Slye of Charles County, had on the 21 August 1669, surveyed and laid out for him a certain tract of land called “Char (?) Doubt” – 300 acres by virtue of a warrant granted him the 7 August 1669. He died and by his last will and testament gave same to his son Robert Slye. Father also died, land descended to petitioner. Granted 20 January 1742. MD LW&P 1739-1747, FHC Film 0013141 Frederick Stone, John M. Daniel, Frances or Travers Daniel - Charles County, MD Petition of John M. Daniel and Margaret, his wife, and Frances Daniel and Mildred, his wife, of the commonwealth of Virginia humbly showeth that Michael Jenifee Stone, guardian to Frederick Stone, late of Charles county, deceased, on the 13 August 1788, obtained out of the Western Shore Land Office a special warrant to resurvey for the said Frederick Stone the following lands lying in the county aforesaid and contiguous to each other viz: “Howsell’s Discovery”, “Shaw’s Trouble” and part of “Mobberly”, which warrant not being executed on 17 day of April 1789, leave was given to include in the resurvey a tract called “Shaw’s Barrons” contiguous to the lands aforesaid. In pursuance whereof a resurvey was made and a certificate thereof returned by the name of “Mobberly Enlarged”, by which it appears the same were found to contain with 123 acres, 2 roods and 5 perches of vacant land added the quantity of 285 acres, 3 rd and 25 p, which vacancy and improvements thereon hath been fully compounded for, agreeably to law. That Frederick Stone since departed this life, intestate, leaving the petioner, Margaret (who since intermarried with John M. Daniel) and Mildred, (who since intermarried with Travers (sic) Daniel, his sisters and heirs-at-law. Your petitioners therefore pray that patent be issued to the said Margaret and Mildred for the said land. Patent issued 23 December 1806 MLW&P, 1801-1808, FHC film 0013131, page 477. James William Thomas 7th Generation of family founded in Maryland by Thomas Thomas who had warrant for 1000 acres situated on north side of the Pautuxent River, near Buzzard’s Island, March 31, 1656. Succeeded by his son, James Thomas of “Ware”, Charles County, MD, born in England prior to 1651. Will probated November 29, 1701 by first wife, Teratia, had children John and Thomas. Thomas Tracy, adminrix (sic) to estate in St. Mary’s County. John Thomas of Charles County 400 acres originally granted to John Bogne, 100 acres to John Thomas, land called “Nading” 2 September 1714. Land on west side of Swanson Run, formerly called Graceham Creek, the P. Marche run being the run that divides Charles and Prince George’s County. MD LW&P 1718-1724, FHC film 0013083, page 157.
