Minish Notes From letter May 16, 1974, Dr. Lawrence T. Minish, Jr., to Robert A. Minish, paragraph 3. "My only knowledge is anecdotal handed down from 'Uncle (great) Will' that our forbearer reached Carrollton, Kentucky by raft or flatboat down the Ohio River. His origin was thought to be Maryland, but I am sure it could just as well have been any place east of the mountains." Note: the great- uncle'Will' refers to William Richard Minish Sr., 1840-1929. The following is my translation of the one page Journal of Richard C. Minish and party from Baltimore until they arrived at Redstone Fort on the Monongahela River. . From there they apparently took a flatboat down the Monongahela to the Ohio River at Pittsburgh (old Fort DuQuesne) and down the Ohio to the juncture of the Kentucky River with the Ohio. Redstone Fort was the terminus of an indian trail known as the Nemacolin Trail and was an ancient earthworks studded with reddish rocks, hence the name Redstone Old Fort. The Fort was built by Col. James Burd about 1759 and known as Ft. Burd or Redstone Fort. It is now Brownsville, Fayette County, PA, where U.S.40 crosses the Monongahela some 50 miles south of Pittsburgh. The original of this Journal page is in the possession of John Owen Suter of Campbellsburg, Kentucky. The Journal has "year 1801" written at the bottom but John Suter believes this was added by Wm. R. Minish Sr., during his genealogical work on the family in the early 1900s. We know that Richard was still in Salisbury until September 10, 1806, when his Indenture of Insolvency was filed, so the Journey to Kentucky would have been the next spring, 1807. Taken Before A. Dashiell J. Leatherbury From the Leslie Dryden Collection, at E.H.Nabb Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury State University, Salisbury, MD, in the Gillis section, page 179: Gillis family history, written by Rev. W.Wier Gillis. Richard Minish married Ellender Gillis in July, 1797. She was the daughter of Joseph Gillis and his wife Grace, and he was the son of John and Elizabeth Minish. They were both probably born near Rewastico Hundred in Somerset County. These notes were from a grand-son, W.R.Minish of Gratz, Ky. "Richard Minish & Nellie his l st wife, emigrated to Kentucky in the year 1807 in company with several other families, among whom were the Carricos, Wallers and probably the Lesters. Before leaving Maryland, Richard was a farmer, a teacher and a merchant, having kept a store at a place called "The Warehouse". It is also said that he commanded a vessel on the Chesapeake Bay. One of his sons, viz; George Gillis Minish told this to the writer in the year 1855-6, and the writer purchased from him, a spy glass or telescope, that had belonged to Richard Minish. After coming to Ky., Richard and some of the other members of the party settled in Gallatin Co., now Carroll, at the mouth of the Ky. River near Port William, now Carrollton. Among the families known to have settled here were the Wallers and Carricos. Richard was a farmer, an inspector of tobacco and an inn or tavern keeper. His home in Carrollton was on the 5th St., East side, between Main & High Sts. and was purchased by him from a Mrs. Sullivan." In addition to these above Dryden notes, there is a short History of the Minish Family of Gratz, Ky., compiled by William R. Minish, Sr. during the month of September 1909 (copy in possesion of Wm. H. Minish, Granger, IN, from John Owen Suter, grandson of Wm. R Sr.,) wherein "Richard Minish after landing at the mouth of Kentucky River settled on a farm a short distance up the Ky. River. He later moved into Port William...." In this same History "In some notes it says Richard Minish came to Ky. from Maryland in 1801 and besides the two sons George and Ezekile he brought two negro slaves". Again, the '1801" would really be 1807. See "Notes" under Sarah Lester Minish and under their "Marriage Notes" for the text of the January 2, 1808 marriage bond by Richard C. Minnish and John Lister Junr. The 1845 Family Bible of William H. Minish, October 11, 1971, the Last Will and Testament, and Codicil of Richard Minish: In the name of God, Amen! I, Richard Minish, of Carrollton, Kentucky, being of sound mind and disposing memory, though weak and feeble in body, and supposing the close of my life to be near at hand, do make ordain and constitute this instrument of writing to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other and former wills by me heretofore made in manner and form following that is to say. In the first place, it is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral expenses be first paid including the sum of one hundred dollars to my son Richard J. Minish, which I justly owe him in cash. Item: I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Sarah Minish, the tavern house and lots pertinent thereto on which I now reside, together with the household and kitchen furniture appertaining to it, free of rent, for and during her natural life in lieu of her rightful dower in my estate. Item: Having advanced to my married children, George Minish, Richard Minish, Elenor Harrison, Elizabeth Harris, and Catherine Bowling, severally upon their marriage, property to the value of forty dollars each. It is my will and desire and I hereby give and bequeath to my sons Thaddeus S.(W.) and William Minish the sum of forty dollars each in order to make their portions equal with the rest of my children before named. Item: The residue of my estate real, personal and mixed after payment of my debts, and the foregoing bequests: it is my will and desire shall be equally divided among all my children now living to wit: George, Richard J., Thaddeus S.(W.),and William Minish and Elenor Harrison, Elizabeth Harris, and Catherine Bowling share and share alike and including of course the estate bequeathed to my wife after the termination of her life estate to them and their heirs forever: with the exception of my daughter Catherine Bowling for whose benefit I desire the following arrangement to be made: I give and bequeath her share to her brother Thaddeus S.(W.) Minish as trustee in trust for her use and benefit and for the support and maintenance of herself and here children fully confiding that he will see to its proper appropriation to the purpose aforesaid: my object being to secure the same to her and her children free from the claim or control in any manner of George Bowling her husband. Should Thaddeus from any cause either now or at any future time fail to act as such trustee, it is my will that the Court of Chancery appoint a suitable trustee in his place. Lastly, I appoint my beloved wife Sarah and my son Thaddeus S.(W.) Minish executor and executrix of this my last will and testament. Item: I have omitted heretofore to say anything in relation to my negro woman Harriet and her child Servis. Harriet's freedom is secured to her at the age of thirty years which will expire of the twelfth day of November, 1847. In the meantime, it is my will and desire that Harriet and her child aforesaid serve my wife Sarah. Should my wife live so long or upon the death of my wife the unexpired time of Harriet's service as well as her said child should be adjudged a slave fall into the mass of my estate. Should the child be adjudged a slave it is my wish and desire that he shall be free on the twenty-forth June, 1870, at which time he will have arrived at the age of thirty years. In testimony whereof I have hereto subscribed my name and affixed my seal and published this instrument of writing as and for my last will and testament this 21 st day of June, 1843. Signed, sealed and published by the testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of the undersigned. (signed) Richard Minish (Seal) (signed) W.B.Winslow Will Scandrett James S. Wyatt R. Minish - Codicil Upon more mature reflection and deliberation, l, Richard Minish, the testator named in the foregoing will, being still of sound mind and disposing memory do add the following as a codicil to said last will and testament that is to say. In view of the fact that the property advanced to my son George G. Minish was perhaps less valuable than that advanced to my other married childrenn and in view of other considerations not necessary to be specified, I have concluded that it would be right and proper that he should have in the distribution of my estate the sum of twenty dollars over and above his equal shares with the married children according to the provisions of the will. I therefore bequeath to him the sum of twenty dollars in addition to the provisions made for him in the will to him and his heirs forever. In testimony whereof I have published this as a codicil to said will this 26th June, 1843. (his mark) Richard Minish Witnesses present (signed) W.B.Winslow James S. Wyatt Carroll County Court September 7, 1843. The last will and testament of Richard Minish, deceased, was presented in Court proven by the oaths of William Scandrett and W.B.
