J.P.H. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JAMES P. HANDLEY PROMINENT FARMER DIED YESTERDAY Mr. James P. Handley, One of the Best Known Farmers In The County Died Yesterday Afternoon At His Home Near Cambridge. Had Been Ill For Six Weeks 6 May 1931 Daily Banner Death yesterday afternoon about two o'clock ended the suffering of Mr. James P. Handley, one of the best known men in the county. He had not been well for sometime but for the past six weeks had been critically ill with heart trouble and other complications and during that time had suffered a great deal of pain. His death occurred at "Ware Neck" Farm, the home farm where he had resided for nearly fifty years. This property was formerly owned by the Hurst family, having been the home of Bishop John Fletcher Hurst, one of the early bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church, while his brother Stephen Hurst, resided on the adjoining farm, "Bonnie Brook." Mr. Handley, who was one of the most progressive and successful farmers in the county, was the son of the late William J. and Mary Higgins Handley and was seventy-one years of age. He was a pleasant and genial gentleman and very easily made friends and having made them he held them. He was one of the first farmers in the county to turn from the habit of growing only the old standard crops, seeing the new opportunities that were offered to those who would grow vegetables and truck crops for the cities and home markets. In early life he became converted and joined Friendship Methodist Church, South, having been a member since he was eighteen years of age. He was a gentleman of excellent character. of sound judgement, reliable, kind hearted and charitable. In addition to being a member of Friendship Church he had been a loyal member of the Grace Church Baraca Class for a number of years. While a gentleman of excellent business judgement he never branched out into other lines of business but confined himself to his agricultural interests. He was a member and former President of Cambridge Grange, a former President of the Tomato Growers Association and always interested in everything that tended to improve the condition of those engaged in agricultural pursuits. He is survived by his wife, who before their marriage was Miss Sarah C. Seward, to whom he had been married for nearly fifty years, and by the following children: William J., of Cambridge; Mrs. James N. Sherman, East New Market; Mrs. Earle Fooks, raymond, and Charles H., of Cambridge, and Joseph Handley of Centreville. He is also survived by one brother Guy H. Handley, of Philadelphia, and by six grandchildren. The funeral services will be held from his late home, near Cambridge, tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon at half past two o'clock and will be conducted by the Rev. O.B. Carter, paster of Friendship Church, assisted by the Rev. W. L. Murphy, pastor of Grace Church. Interment will be in the Cambridge Cememtery. The active pall bearers will be Messrs. James C. Johnson, George B. Nabb, John S. Skinner, Russell P. Smith, William R. Davis and Marion H. Marshall. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHARLES HENRY HANDLEY Charles Henry Handley, Sr. of Cambridge, died Saturday night at 8:45 pm January 30, in the Cambridge Maryland Hospital. He was born in Cambridge on January 18, 1897, being 63 years of age, the son of the late James P. and Cornelia Seward Handley. He had lived the greater portion of his life on the Weir Neck Farm, near Cambridge, the home of his parents. For several yeas he resided at Sewards, MD. In 1938 he built his home on the home farm, where he resided until his death. He was a member of Friendship Church, and a veteran of World War I, and a member of the American Legion. He married the former Edith Helen Bradley, daughter of the late William and Edith L. Bradley, of Aireys, on January 23, 1918, who survives him. Survivors in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Willey and Miss Sarah Louise Handley, two sons, Charles H., William Dorsey Handley, all of Cambridge, 2 sisters and 2 brothers, Mrs. James Sherman, Mrs. Earl Fooks, Raymond Handley all of Cambridge, and Joseph Handley, of Centreville. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held from the LeCompte Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm with the Rev. George Bennett and Rev. Handley, of Centreville, died last night at the House in the Pines, Easton. She was born April 26, 1896, in Cambridge, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Summerfield Lewis. Mr. and Mrs. Handley moved to Centreville, and have resided at Pioneer Point since that time. In addition to her husband, whom she married on Oct 30, 1919, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Sewell R. Matthews, two grandsons, Sewell, Jr. and T.L. Matthews, of Cambridge, one granddaughter, Mrs. Howard German, Jr., of Easton; and a sister, Mrs. Clyde Henry, of Cambridge. Funeral services will be held from the Barton Brothers Funeral Home oin Centreville, at 1 pm Saturday. Interment will be in the family plot in Dorchester Memorial Park, Cambridge. Daily Banner 22 May 1969 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HELEN BRADLEY HANDLEY Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Bradley Handley, wife of the late Charles H. Handley will be held Friday at 1 pm in the LeCompte Funeral Home, with the Rev. Garry O. Parker officiating. Interment will be in the family plot in Dorchester Memorial Park. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Handley died suddenly Monday at her home on RFD2, Cambridge from a coronary attack. She was born in Dorchester County, Jan 28, 1900, being 69, the daughter of William and Edith LeCompte Bradley. She was employed for many years as a saleslady at Vane’s Millinery, and later at the Thrifty Shop, both located in Cambridge. Mrs. Handley was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Choptank Post Veterans of Foreign Wars, No 7460, and a member of Friendship United Methodist church, of Aireys, where she was a member of the choir, and also a member of the P.O. of A. Lodge. Her husband died in Jan 1960. Her survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Elmer Willey, of RFD2; two sons, Charles H. Handley, Jr. of Cambridge, and William Dorsey Handley, of RFD2; three sisters, Mrs. Elmer Donoho, of Preston, MD, Mrs. James Hilman, Hebron, MD and Mrs. Gilbert Waldron, of Baton Rouge, LA; two brothers, Allen Bradley, Hurlock, and Lee Bradley, of Boothwyn, PA. Another daughter, Sara Louise Handley, died in 1966. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; one great- grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Dorsey HANDLEY of RFD 2, Cambridge, died on March 26, 1972 in the Cambridge, Maryland Hospital.Mr. Handley has been ill for approximately five months. Mr. Handley was born May 18, 1923, being 48 years of age. He was the son of the late Charles Henry and Helen Bradley HANDLEY. As a resident of Dorchester County, Mr. Handley attended the public schools and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1941. Mr. Handley was the first commercial broiler grower of Dorchester County and in 1945 his operation was at the Handley Farm which had increased in size and was continuing in operation at the time of his death. In addition to the broiler business he was employed from 1952 to 1957 by the Centerville Milling Company, Centerville, Maryland. From 1957 to 1967 he worked at Bay Shore Food Inc. in Easton, MD where he held various positions. It was from this capacity that Mr. Handley resigned in 1967 to concentrate on expanding and improving his own broiler business. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.Mr. Handley's other memberships included the BPOE No.1272, the Dorchester County Farm Bureau and the Delmarva Poultry Industry. Mr. Handley is survived by his wife, Barbara Butler Handley, RFD 2; one daughter, Jean Handley, a student at the University of Maryland, College Park; one son, William D. Handley of Greenbelt, MD; one grandson, Christopher D. Handley. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Elmer Willey of Cambridge, a brother, Charles H. Handley, Jr. also of Cambridge and four nieces and one nephew. Services will be conducted on Wednesday, March 29, 1972 at 2 pm from the LeCompte Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard C. Hubbard officiating. Internment will take place in the family plot in Dorchester Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers those wishing to do so may contribute to the Dorchester County Heart Association or the Crippled Children's Fund. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JOSEPH S. HANDLEY Joseph Sterling Handley, 86, of Glenburn Ave., Cambridge, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 1985 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was the husband of the former Mary Blanche Leonard, to whom he was married on July 23,1971. Born Sep 15, 1898, in Cambridge, he was the son of the late James P. and Sara Seward Handley. Mr. Handley was educated in Dorchester County and had been associated with Raskob Estate of Pioneer Point Farms, Centerville, since 1929. He was an avid hunter, sportsman and skeet shooter. On Oct. 30, 1919, he married the former Mary Lewis, who died on May 21, 1969 In his earlier years he was a member of Friendship Methodist Church and since 1971, had been a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge. He was a member of Cambridge Lodge BPOE, the Cambridge Yacht Club and a charter member of the Sportsman's Club of Queen Anne's County. In addition to his wife, Mr. Handley is survived by a daughter, Virginia Handley Matthews, Cambridge; three grandchildren, Mary Jo German, Oxford, Sewell Matthews, Jr., Cambridge and Terry Lewis Matthews, of Chester; two great- grandchildren, Jason and Mary Matthews of Cambridge; two step daughters, Frances Flowers of Cambridge and Barbara Stevens of Easton; six stepgrandchildren, Ann, Jane and Dean Flowers, Christina Perry, Kevin Stevens and Kenny Kreiser, and several nieces and nephews Preceding him in death were two sisters, Nellie Fooks and Bertha Sherman and three brothers, Charles, Raymond and William Handley. There will be no viewing. Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Buford Painter officiating. Interment will follow in Dorchester Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sewell Matthews Jr., T.L. Matthews, Howard German Jr., Dean Flowers, Dr. Thomas Flowers and Kevin Stevens.
