All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/md/mdfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Mark Ault meault@yahoo.com February 13, 2009, 11:45 am Manumission of slave called Bill Brown Written: August 8, 1822 Recorded: August 8, 1822 Frederick County Land Records – JS 16 282 At the request of Negro Bill Brown the following Manumission is recorded August 8 th, 1822 to wit: To all whom it may concern be it known that I Joseph Stauffer of Frederick County for divers good causes and consideration ??? thereunto moving have released from slavery liberated manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby release from slavery liberate manumitt and set free my negro man named Bill otherwise called Bill Brown about thirty two years of age, the said negro was divised to the said Joseph Stauffer by the last will and testament of his father Daniel Stouffer ???? bearing date the sixteenth day of August 1797 to be manumitted and set free at the age of thirty five years now this instrument therefore witnesseth that the said Joseph Stauffer hath manumitted and set freee the aforesaid negro man above named to be henceforth free from all manner of servitude or service to me my executors or administrators forever. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed by seal this 8 th day of August in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and twenty two. Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of Geo. Rohr} Joseph Stouffer {seal} Which was thus endorsed to wit Maryland Frederick County to wit On this 8 th day of August 1822 personally appears Joseph Stouffer party to the within instrument of writing before me the subscriber a Justice of the Peace in and for the County aforesaid and acknowledges the same to be his act and deed for the purposes within mentioned and the negro man within named to be henceforth manumitted and discharged from all service to him or to any claiming under him and to be free and manumitted according to the act of assembly in such cases made approved Acknowledged before Geo.
