B. Birely WAS RETIRED MERCHANT Elmer B. Birely, well-known citizen and retire merchant of Woodsboro district, died at his home in Woodsboro on Monday morning at 11.15 o’clock after an illness of more than a year, aged 72 years, 10 months and 26 days. He was a son of the late Adam and Jane Anders Birely and was for many years associated with his father in the warehouse and fertilizer business at Ladiesburg. After his father’s death he conducted the business alone for a number of years. The deceased became a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran church at Haugh’s when 14 years of age and continued to take an active part in the affairs of the church and Sunday school until the time of his death. Four years ago he moved into Woodsboro and transferred his membership to the Evangelical Lutheran church, that place, and manifested the same active interest in this congregation that he had shown in that at Haughs. He was a life-long Democrat of the old school and prided himself upon the fact. For many years he served as Democratic judge of elections for Woodsboro district. Mr. Birely is survived by his widow, Mrs. Katheryne E. Martz Birely and by four brothers: William F. Birely, Keymar; Jesse C. Birely, Collingsdale, Pa.; Clarence E. Birely, Philadelphia, and F. H. Birely, Ladiesburg. Funeral will be held Thursday afternoon with services at the late home at 2 o’clock, Rev. Herbert H. Schmidt, new pastor of Woodsboro charge, officiating assisted by Rev. Nelson C. Brown, pastor of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed church, Woodsboro. Burial will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery, Woodsboro. M. L. Creager and Son are funeral directors in charge.
