H. ETZLER Former Member Of Legislature, Well-Known Business Man. ILL SINCE SEPTEMBER Anderson H. Etzler, prominent citizen of Thurmont and well-known throughout the county, died at his home in Thurmont at 10:45 o’clock Monday night after an illness since last September, aged 74 years. Although he had been ill for some time, news of his death came as a shock to his many friends. Mr. Etzler was a son of the late Geo. W. and Margaret Albaugh Etzler, natives of Liberty district. He was born on a farm near Johnsville, February 23, 1861 and had a public school education. At the age of eighteen, he went to learn the milling business with Calvin B. Anders, at Detour, and completed his trade under A. O. Young, near Waynesboro, Pa. He then followed the occupation at Orville, O., for one year, returning to Maryland, embarked in the milling business near Middleburg, Carroll county. Turning his attention to farming, he lived for three years in Johnsville district. In 1889 he went to Woodsboro and built the Woodsboro Rolling Mills, which he conducted until March, 1904. He then organized the Glade Valley Milling Company and turned his plant over to the new concern. Shortly afterwards he purchased the Walkersville Elevator Company, erected a mill there and merged the concerns. He was president and general manager of the Glade-Valley Milling Company until 1904, when he disposed of his interest in the enterprise. In June 1906, he accepted a position as bookkeeper for the Woodsboro Savings Bank and in December 1907, was elected cashier, a position he held for a number of years. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank. For years he was a leading citizen of Woodsboro before moving to Thurmont, where he also became on of the prominent residents of the town, for a time operating the Thurmont Milling Company. He retired about ten years ago. Mr. Etzler was a staunch Republican and served as a member of the House of Delegates for three terms, ending in 1934. He was active in party affairs. Only recently, he had been named as a magistrate for Thurmont by Governor Harry W. Nice. He is survived by his wife by a second marriage, formerly Miss Dessie, daughter of the late Rev. John A. Saxten, Woodsboro, and two daughters, Mrs. Cora V. Barrick, Woodsboro and Miss Ada Virginia Etzler, Thurmont; one son, Roscoe E. Etzler, this city, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gertrude Etzler, this city; three grandchildren; one brother, Jeremiah Etzler, Woodsboro; one sister, Mrs. Harriet V. Devilbiss, Johnsville.
