Patton, 81, of Sykesville, a well-known Carroll County homebuilder for more than 40 years and a World War II veteran, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, of natural causes at the home of his son and daughter-in-law Donald H. and Vicky Patton in Mount Airy. Mr. Patton was born on Nov. 11, 1922, Veterans Day, and will be buried today, Veterans Day. Born in 1922 in the small mountain town of Lansing, N.C., Mr. Patton moved to Baltimore with his wife and first son in 1954 to find work. He began as a brick mason, a trade he learned from his father, the late Walter Patton. He was also the son of the late Mimmi Caudill Patton. Soon after he started his own home-building business. Together with his sons he built over 4,000 homes in Carroll County and the surrounding area. He enjoyed making the dream of homeownership come true for many young couples by designing and building their first homes. As years went by he would also build their second homes and the homes of their children. Mr. Patton took pride that his business could do everything from purchasing land, building the home, to seeding the lawn and black-topping the driveway. In 1999 at the age of 75, he scoffed at the suggestion of retirement and built Nell's Acres Retirement Community, named for his wife, in Eldersburg because he wanted to provide senior housing for his contemporaries. Until the last few months, he still enjoyed being on the job sites with subcontractors and going into the office early each morning. Mr. Patton was most proud of his service as a sergeant with 94th Medical Gas Unit of the Third Army in World War II. Although no relation, he served under Gen. George S. Patton in the final campaigns of the war, which included the liberation of concentration camps in Germany. He was very active with the Army reunions through the rest of his life and was also proud that his birthday was on Veterans Day. In 1978, together with his wife, Nell, he purchased the old farm of Nell's uncle in Lansing, which they completely renovated. He enjoyed hosting the annual Patton family reunions there, where family members from Delaware to Florida would convene for cookouts and softball games. At the age of 70, Mr. Patton took up golf. He learned to play by watching it on TV. He enjoyed playing for the rest of his life, particularly with his sons and their friends. He steadfastly refused to play from the senior tees, preferring to play from the longer tees to keep up with his younger competitors. He was very fond of his two granddaughters Fallon and Sophia Patton and in his later years enjoyed talking and spending time with them. He was also a loyal supporter of local youth sports teams and the Carroll County 4-H. Mr. Patton is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nell Jones Patton of Sykesville, sons and daughters-in-law, Donald H. and Vicky A. Patton of Mount Airy, David S. and Kellie E. Patton of Finksburg; a sister, Maude Hall of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, William A. Patton of Petersburg, Va.; two granddaughters, Fallon and Sophia Patton, numerous nieces and nephews; special and devoted friends, Mike and Kathy Snyder of Reisterstown; Art Michaels of Hanover, Pa.; and his beloved dog, Scoobie. The family received friends on Monday and Tuesday at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., in Winfield, with a service Tuesday with his friend and pastor, the Rev. Earl Gray, officiating. Mr. Patton will be buried today at the Lansing United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lansing, N.C. where he was a lifetime member.
