R. HAPER STRICKEN; DIES 20 MINUTES LATER Former Deputy County Treasurer Suffers Heart Attack As Prepares For Day’s Work. WAS ONCE POSTMASTER AT MONROVIA OFFICE Well Known In Lutheran Church Circles – Funeral Service On Saturday. [picture] Stricken with a heart attack as he prepared to start on his tour as a salesman for the Frederick Trading Company this morning, Charles R. Harper, one of Frederick county’s well-known citizens, died twenty minutes later. He was aged 64 years. Mr. Harper’s death occurred at 9 o’clock, a few minutes after a physician had reached his side. He had seemed in his usual good spirits on coming to work, and was talking with employees when he was stricken. The ambulance of M. R. Etchison and Son was called to remove him to the Frederick City Hospital, but Mr. Harper died soon after the arrival of the ambulance and Dr. Edward P. Thomas, who attended him. Mr. Harper’s wife died at their home in this city last January 19. Only yesterday he and members of his family had moved to their new home, 112 North Bents street. Serving a varied career as schoolmaster, deputy county treasurer, merchant and postmaster, Mr. Harper had many associations in Frederick county, and scores of persons were shocked today to learn of his death. He was born January 8, 1874, a son of Richard K. and Phoebe Craver Harper, of Hansonville. He received his education at Walkersville High School and subsequently taught for sixteen years in the Lewistown and Utica schools. Twenty-five ago he became deputy treasurer of Frederick county, under Frederick W. Cramer, treasurer. At the conclusion of this term, Mr. Harper moved to Monrovia, where he engaged in merchandising. He served as postmaster during the nearly score of years in which he resided there. Three years ago he moved his residence to this city. He was a man of jovial manner, cultivating many friendships. He sought unsuccessfully, the post of County Treasurer. As a Democrat he was active in party matters. As a Lutheran he was superintendent of the Sunday School of Utica Lutheran church for a number of years, and was also director of the choir. He was a member of New Market lodge I. O. O. F. Mr. Harper is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William E. Zimmerman and Miss Madolyn Harper, both at home; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Stottlemyer, Utica, and Mrs. William Shoemaker, Hansonville, and two brothers, Allen Harper, Hansonville, and Norman Harper, principal of Lewistown school. The body was prepared for burial by M. L. Creager and Son, Thurmont. Funeral Saturday afternoon, leaving the late residence at two o’clock, with further services in Utica Lutheran church conducted by the paster, Rev. F. R. Seibel, Jr. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.
