Mrs. Nettie Cronise Lutes, for many years a member of the bar of Ohio, and the first woman ever admitted to the practice of law in that State, will be buried in Washington Memorial cemetery at Valley Forge, Friday afternoon at three o’clock. Mrs. Lutes was a direct descendant of on of the old Frederick families, being the granddaughter of Henry and Susanna Cronise, nee Fundenberg, who were residents of Frederick in the early part of the nineteenth century. In 1827 Henry Cronise removed with his family over the old Cumberland road in a Conestoga wagon to Seneca county, Ohio, in the county seat of which, Tiffin, he established the first store, the first United States postoffice, and later published the first newspaper. He also served in a number of official capacities, including several years as Senator in the State legislature. Mrs. Lutes was born in Tiffin, Ohio, in 1842. She was not only the first woman admitted to the practice of law in Ohio, but the third woman in the United States to have that honor. Together with her husband, Nelson B. Lutes, she was a leading practitioner for many years in the courts of her native State and of the adjoining states as well as in the District and Supreme Courts of the United States. She was a personal friend of ex-Justice Clark an several other membders [sic] of the Untied States Supreme Court. Mrs. Lutes was admitted to the bar in 1873, and continued to practice until about five years ago, since which time she has suffered a long and trying illness, culminating in her death. The Women’s Club of Ohio and adjoining States are planning to erect a memorial to her memory as one of the pioneers of their sex in the wider field of women’s activities. Mrs. Lutes is survived by a sister, Miss Florence Cronise, also an attorney of Tiffin, Ohio, and three daughters, Miss Evlyn L. Lutes, Tiffin, and the Misses Elinor S. and Lillian C. Lutes, of Philadelphia. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral. Autos will leave 319 Cherry street, Norristown, for the Washington Memorial chapel at two o’clock sharp on Friday.
