Marken Well Known Business Man Succumbed to Heart Attack. Ill for but a few days Victor M. Marken, president of Marken and Bielfeld, Inc., local printers, died at his home at Braddock Heights Sunday afternoon at 4 10 o’clock after a short illness of a heart attack, aged 76 years, 4 months, 9 days. He was taken ill Wednesday and never regained consciousness. A son of the late Josiah R. and Ann Buhrman Marken, Wolfsville, he was born in Frederick November 27, 1859, and was a lifelong resident of this city. Marken and Bielfeld, which Mr. Marken headed was founded in 1885 by the deceased’s father, Josiah Marken, and his partner the late Jonathan J. Bielfeld. The elder Marken died a few years after the formation of the original partnership, and upon his death the business was carried on by his son and Mr. Bielfeld. All the men were practical printers, although Mr. Bielfeld devoted most of his energies to the business while Mr. Marken supervised mechanical details. Upon Mr. Bielfeld’s death in January, 1918, another partnership was formed by Mr. Marken with Harry L. Kirscofe, for 30 years in charge of the composing room, and Richard P. Simmons. In 1925 the business was incorporated with a capitalization of $100,000. Mr. Marken, when he was in the plant, was rated highly as a hand compositor, was a good pressman and did a fair share of the cutting and trimming in the bindery. While not actively engaged in the business in recent years, Mr. Marken, nevertheless, went to the plant every day. He was one of Frederick’s leading business men, and was known to be conservative, frank, and democratic in nature. Politically he was a Republican. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Sue Herbert Marken, and one daughter, Mrs. Irving Abb, Braddock. One sister, Mrs. E. A Fox, Towson and one grandson, Irving Victor Abb, also survive. Funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock from his late home at Braddock Heights, with services conducted by Rev. Charles D. Shaffer, general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. Interment Mt. Olivet cemetery. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/mdfiles/ File size: 2.6 Kb This file is located at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/md/frederick/obits/m/marken-vm.txt
