FOR G. H. ZIMMERMAN Widely Known Business-Man And Citizen Of This City [picture] George H. Zimmerman George H. Zimmerman, one of Frederick’s best known citizens, died Saturday at 1.55 a. m. at his residence, 302 Rockwell Terrace. Mr. Zimmerman had been ill for some time but his condition did not become critical until the last few days. Born near Walkersville, May 11, 1850, Mr. Zimmerman was a son of the late William H. and Sarah A. Zimmerman. He spent his early life in Walkersville district where he acquired a general education in the public schools. When he was fourteen years of age he began life for himself by becoming a clerk in the store of Zimmerman and Schultz at Sykesville where he remained for about three years. In 1867, he came to Frederick where he has since resided. He was employed in his father’s grocery store until 1870 when he was elected teller of the First National Bank of Frederick. This position he filled for a period of seventeen years, when he resigned to accept the office of assistant cashier of the Frederick County National Bank. In 1887, he, with David Lowenstein, Thomas H. Haller, M. Eugene Getzendanner, and John Baumgartner organized the Frederick Seamless Hosiery Company, which in 1889 was absorbed by the Union Manufacturing Company, under the same management. In 1889 he severed his connection with the Frederick County National Bank and devoted his entire time to this new enterprise and at the time of his death was vice-president and treasurer. He was a director of the Frederick County National Bank and a trustee of the Home for the Aged. He served for a number of years as a trustee for the Loats Home. He was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran church in which he served in official capacities for many years. He was treasurer of the church school at the time of his death having served in this capacity for 40 years. Fraternally he was a Mason, being a member of Columbia Lodge, No. 58, A. F. and A. M. Enoch Chapter, No. 23, Royal Arch Masons, and Jacques DeMolay Commandery, No.4, Knights Templar. He was the oldest member of this Commandery. He was also a member of the Independent Hose Co., No. 1. Politically he was a Republican and served as a member of the Board of Aldermen from 1898 to 1901, during Mayor Wm. F. Chilton’s administration. Mr. Zimmerman was married in 1873 to Miss Florence V. Frazier, who died in 1911. He is survived by two sisters, Misses Amanda D. and Clara E. Zimmerman, and the following children: William D., Thomas L., Mrs. Willard Markey, and Miss Grace E. Zimmerman, of Frederick, and George C. Zimmerman, of Philadelphia, Pa., and three grandsons and two granddaughters. The funeral will be held from his late home this afternoon 2.30 o’clock with services at the house and interment in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Services will be in charge of Columbia Lodge, No. 58. A.
