WHITEFORD Mrs. Mary E. WHITEFORD, wife of James R. WHITEFORD, died at her home at Cambria, on Friday night. Mrs. WHITEFORD has, for several years, been in delicate health, and for nearly a year has been confined to her home, being able to go out only on pleasant days and only for short distances. About the first of August she grew worse and although some days she seemed a little better she rapidly declined during the past six weeks, and died on Friday night last, as stated, surrounded by her family and a number of her friends. Mrs. WHITEFORD was widely known, and universally beloved. Her like was characterized by a firm christian faith and submission to the Divine will. She seemed to realize that the church is the body of Christ, and she as a member of the church was a member of Christ's body, and therefore she was always laboring for the spiritual and temporal welfare of the church, believing that she should thus extend the power of the preached gospel, and glorify her Lord the great head of church. Mrs. WHITEFORD was also specially devoted to her home and family. A faithful wife and mother. No sacrifice was too great for her if it would yield good to her husband and children. As a friend she was sincere. In the church, at home and wherever known, she had the affection and confidence of all. Her last hours were most precious to the Christian heart. Without a fear she spoke to her family of her approaching death and counseled all to live near the Saviour. A few hours before her death she expressed to her pastor her absolute trust in Chrust, and afterward sent for friends to sing for her. She selected the pieces and evidently enjoyed every word. One of her last requests was to sing, "It is well with my Soul." Less than a half hour afterwards she passed away. Her funeral took place on Monday morning. Services was held in the Slate Ridge church of which she was a member. Services was held in the Slate Ridge church of which she was a member. The pastor, Rev. A. Lewis Hyde conducted the services and preached from text 1 Thess. 4:18 "Wherefore comfort one another with these words." Rev. J. D. Smith also spoke, and Revs. K.J. Stewart, A.G. Parker, T.M. Crawford, T.H. Wright and J. Cadwallader took part in the services. The pall-bearers who were selected by Mrs. WHITEFORD, were Messrs J. Polk STREET, W. Scott WHITEFORD, J. Ross SCARBOROUGH, James DAVIS, James BUTLER and W. J. JOHNSTON. The funeral was one of the largest ever known in this vicinity, the church being filled and a large number unable to get in.
