Nettie McCaughey Dillon Nettie McCaughey Dillon, 87, a Bible scholar and former elder of the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Rockville, died Aug. 5 of cancer at the National Lutheran Home in Rockville. Mrs. Dillon and her husband Gordon moved from a Chicago suburb to the Lutheran Home in 1984 and became members of the Church of the Cross. After Mr. Dillon's death that same year, Mrs. Dillon remained active in church affairs. She served on the church's board of elders from 1987 through 1990. Born in Racine, Wis., in 1909, she graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois in 1931 and married Gordon Dillon, an industrial chemist, two years later. They had five children. The couple shared a powerful Christian faith, and during the 1940s helped found the Berean Baptist Church in Adrian, Mich. After a move to Mt. Vernon, Ohio, in 1948, the Dillons joined with four other families there to found the Emmanuel Baptist Church. As Mrs. Dillon raised her children, she encouraged them to read. During the 1950s, as she read aloud the Narnia books by C.S. Lewis to her family, she carried on an intermittent correspondence with the British author, discussing with him the Biblical symbolism in his writings. For years she offered Bible classes to women and young mothers who sought her guidance. She was also active in the League of Women Voters. Her political views evolved considerably over the years. Mrs. Dillon had a keen wit and was a bit of a prankster. After a teenager once ran into her with his bicycle and failed to apologize, she followed him to a fountain, found him leaning over hurling stones at the goldfish, and shoved him in.
