Slaughter Dr. George M. Slaughter, 73, of Damascus, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, at home. He was the husband of Jane Slaughter. Dr. Slaughter was a Navy veteran with a doctorate in civil engineering. He taught and conducted research in fluid mechanics, hydrology, thermodynamics and computer applications in civil engineering for 28 years at Louisiana State University, the U.S. Naval Academy and Georgia Institute of Technology. He had been a registered professional engineer since 1959, serving as a consulting engineer in Maryland, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Neill Slaughter of Southampton, N.Y., Scott Slaughter of Atlanta, Ga., and Dean Slaughter of Gaithersburg; five grandchildren; and one brother, Robert D. Slaughter of Oceanside, Calif. Memorial services were held on Jan. 8 at Damascus United Methodist Church. Additional memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on March 15, at Amelia Plantation Chapel, Amelia Island, Fla. The Molesworth Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. Ethel M. Gates Ethel M. Gates, 86, of Silver Spring, died on Monday, Feb. 2, at Brooke Grove Nursing Home in Olney. Twice married, she is survived by her second husband, George A. Gates and was predeceased by her first husband, Ernest M. Montgomery. Born 1911, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Maggie Dudley Ford. She was a homemaker and of the Protestant faith. Surviving besides her husband are three children: Eunice Lawson of Germantown, Ernest Montgomery, Richard Montgomery of Millersville; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Barbour, 74, died Feb. 9 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born in Washington, D.C., she attended Eastern High School and was a housewife. She is survived by her husband, John Barbour; six children, Tom, Mary Ann, Jeanne, June, John and Tony; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Friends may visit today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the DeVol Funeral Home, 10 E. Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg. Davidson James Patrick Davidson, 23, of Gaithersburg, died Feb. 7, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Damascus. Born in Takoma Park, he was a son of James W. and Sandra Smith Davidson of Gaithersburg. Mr. Davidson was a 1993 graduate of Damascus High School. He was a gifted athlete and an avid soccer player from kindergarten through 10th grade. While in ninth grade he was invited to play soccer on the international level. He had been employed since graduation with P&R Drywall of Frederick. He was a Baptist. Surviving besides his parents are a sister, Victoria Rose Davidson of Gaithersburg; and two grandmothers, Ludie Smith of Dudley, N.C., and Katherine Necessary of Gray, Tenn. Funeral services were held Feb. 10 at the Molesworth Funeral Home in Damascus. Entombment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery Mausoleum in Frederick. Max Kelly Emerson Max Kelly Emerson, 74, of Gaithersburg died Feb. 5 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Frazier A. and Geneva M. Emerson. Mr. Emerson worked for the B&O Railroad during World War II. Toward the end of the war, he built and owned a gas station on Travilah Road in Rockville, where he worked until 1954. He spent the next 30 years with Montgomery County Public Schools as a supervisor of transportation. Toward the end of his career, he was the director of transportation. He retired in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Hazel R. Emerson, whom he married on Feb. 23, 1943. He also is survived by three children, Frank Emerson of Gaithersburg, Dick Emerson and Faye Emerson Rowe, both of Damascus; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Finneyfrock Sr., 64, of Chantilly, Va., died Feb. 5 at the Fair Oaks Hospital in Chantilly. Born in Washington Grove, he was the son of the late Calvin and Edith M. Howes Finneyfrock. Mr. Finneyfrock was a heavy equipment operator in construction. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Lee Wolfe Finneyfrock; seven children, Nancy Lee Polaski of Stafford, Va., Stanley F. Giovanetti, 91, died Feb. 6 at the Wilson Health Care Center at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Silvio and Emilia Giovanetti. Mr. Giovanetti was a retired clerk with the federal government. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He is survived by a sister, Evelyn Giovanetti of Gaithersburg. She was retired from the Montgomery County Clerk of the Court office. Survivors include a sister, Margaret P. Price of Rockville; and two brothers, Thomas E. Plummer of Rockville and William A. Born Jan. 17, 1903, at Tazewell, Va., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Atelia Gillespie Hagy. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and a longtime member of the Methodist church. Burial was in Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville. Russell F. Offutt Russell F. Offutt, 80, of Cedar Grove, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, at his home. He was the husband of Eleanor Watkins Offutt. Born Jan. 17, 1918, at Gaithersburg, he was a son of the late Walter C. and Esther Snyder Offutt. Mr. Offutt served in the U.S. Army and was a sergeant in Company A, 115th Infantry Regiment during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals. He was a member of American Legion Post 171, Damascus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and the 29th Division of Maryland. Mr. Offutt played bass for more than 20 years with the Johnny Glaze Band of Clarksburg. Surviving besides his wife is a sister, Gertrude Cherault of Gaithersburg. Mr. Offutt was predeceased by two brothers, Paul Offutt and Ralph Offutt. Memorial services were held on Feb. 15 at the Molesworth Funeral Home. Kehler Dorothy Lee Kehler, 56, of Damascus, died Thursday, Feb. 12, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. She was the wife of Lamar Kehler. Born Nov. 9, 1941, at Tower City, Pa., she was a daughter of Dorothy Hepler of Annville, Pa., and the late Leonard Schaeffer. Surviving besides her husband and mother are two daughters, Jane Kehler Schlosser of Germantown and Marie Ann Joholske of Silver Spring; one sister, Elizabeth Messner of Annville; and one brother, Leonard Schaeffer of Tower City. Nance Elizabeth F. Nance of Germantown died Feb. 15 at her home. She was 88. Born in 1909 in Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Ida Buchanan Arehart. Mrs. Nance was twice married and predeceased by her first husband, Houston Swink Sr. Mrs. Nance was a homemaker and a member of Germantown Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband: Lewis P. Nance; four children: Houston H. Swink, Jr. of Florida; Robert Swink of Baltimore; James Swink of Germantown; and Jan Melissa Swink of Poolesville; one sister, Estelle A. Studds of Bethesda; also, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Opal Pauline Combs Opal P. Combs of Germantown, formerly of Unity, died Feb. 13, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. She was 80. Born in 1917 in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Washburn and Barbara Lee Funk Reynolds. She was the wife of the late Charles Stanley Combs. Mrs. Combs was a homemaker and a former member of Laytonsville Baptist Church. She is survived by seven children: Kenneth Combs of Louisiana; Charles Sherman Combs of Woodstock, Va; Barbara Ann Keller of Taneytown; Richard W. Combs of Ijamsville; Sharon A. Wayne of Frederick; Deryell Combs of Jefferson; Kelvin W. Combs of Union Bridge; one sister, Elaine Campbell of Virginia; and numerous grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville. William F. Alderton William "Bill" Frederick Alderton, 80, of Gaithersburg died Feb. 16 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born in Ednor, he was a son of the late John Franklin and Mamie Cordelia Burriss Alderton. He was the husband of Catherine Cashell Alderton, whom he married Sept. 16, 1938. Mr. Alderton ran a chicken hatchery in Laurel during World War II. He later became a dairy farmer, then ran a milk route for Martin's Dairy in Olney. In the late 1950s he went to work for L.W. White and Son Hardware, from where he retired in 1997. Mr. Alderton was a member of Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church in Olney and had been head usher at the old church chapel, where he founded the ushers group which consisted of his three sons and nephew. Two of his sons still usher at Oakdale Emory today. Mr. Alderton had attended Sherwood School in Sandy Spring. He was a volunteer fireman with Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department in the late 1950s. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, William C. Alderton and his wife Deborah of Olney and Willard C. Alderton and his wife Jo Ann of Damascus; two sisters, Earlene Oursler and Dorothy Leishear, both of Brinklow; and 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Phillip F. David Corelli Alger David, 92, a nutrition educator who was active in civic throughout her life, died Jan. 23 at the Wilson Health Care Center at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg. Mrs. David served for 20 years as director of the Montgomery County Public School's lunch program, as an advisor to Montgomery College in establishing the college's two year course in food service management for the associate arts degree and as a consultant to the Maryland Department of Education. She also served as president of the Maryland School Food Service Association. A resident of Arlington, Va., for 50 years, she was a member of Arlingtonians for a Better County and The Coalition on Optimum Growth Inc. She owned a second home, a farm in Augusta, W. Va., and was honored in December by the Homemakers Club of Hampshire County. Born in Bridgewater, Mass., she was a 1927 graduate of Simmons College, with a bachelor of science degree in home economics. She taught in Orange, N.J., was a manager for Schrffts Restaurant in New York City, and wrote for the women's page of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. Her husband, Amos Ray David, died 14 years ago. She is survived by a son, Donald David; three daughters, Evelyn McKenney, Virginia Trulio and Carol David; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A family memorial service will be scheduled. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., where her great-grandmother, Corelli Caswell Williams, also of Massachusetts, was buried in 1889. William J. Hoffman William J. Hoffman, 81, died Feb. 13 at his home at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg. Born in Plainfield, N.J., he received his bachelor's of arts and bachelor's of science degrees from Columbia University. Mr. Hoffman was a Lt. j.g. in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He later worked as a civil engineer, and had been a member and president of the Plainfield Symphony Orchestra. He is survived by his wife, Marie H. Hoffman; sons, Dr. Gerald Hoffman of Warrentown, Va., and William C. Hoffman of California; daughter, Kathleen Coulter of Auburn, Ind.; and five grandchildren. Slagle, 61, of Woodbine, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Gilcrest Hospice Center, Baltimore. She was the wife of the late Donald R. Slagle. Born Sept. 5, 1936, at Erwin, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Nola Mae Buchanan Lloyd. Mrs. Slagle had been employed as a school bus driver with Montgomery County Public Schools for more than 27 years. Survivors include three children, Michael W. Slagle of Newport, Va., Kelsey Slagle of Woodbine and Brenda Denny of Charles Town, W. Va.; six grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; one brother, Thomas Lloyd of Tennessee; and one sister, Shirley Amoss of Tennessee. Arvella Brown Arvella Brown, 79, formerly of Gaithersburg, died of cancer on Feb. 8 at the McGregor Nursing Home in Bluefield, Va. Born in Kirby, W.Va., she was the daughter of John Christopher and Rosie Mae Smith Shanholtzer. She moved to Bethesda in the early 1940s and owned and operated Martin's Restaurant. She later moved to Gaithersburg and opened the Club 240 restaurant in Rockville. It was later renamed The Blue Fountain Inn. She was in the restaurant business for 30 years. She moved to Wytheville, Va., in 1976, and lived in the Fort Chiswell Mansion. She owned an antique shop in Wytheville. She is survived by three sisters, Velma Peters of Kirby, W.Va., Viola Jones of Romney, W.Va., and Nadine Hudson of Middleport, Ohio; a nephew, Gary Daugherty of Kirby; and many more nieces and nephews. She was the stepmother of Barry Bryan of Gaithersburg and Larry Bryan of Frederick. Funeral services were held Feb. 11 at the Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke, Va.
