Shazer Brian Christopher Shazer, 18, of Damascus, died Monday, Feb. 23, at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda. Born Aug. 10, 1979, at Silver Spring, he was a son of Glenna McLarney Caffery of Damascus and Louis Blaine Shazer of Cumberland. He was employed with Boyer and Cramer Hardware of Damascus. Surviving besides his parents are a stepfather, Larry E. Caffery of Damascus; a half brother, Sean Caffery of Damascus; two stepbrothers, Steve Caffery and Tim Caffery, both of Iowa; and stepgrandparents, Phyllis and Larry H. Caffery, both of Iowa. The family received friends on Feb. 25 at the Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus, where funeral services were held on Feb. 26. Burial was in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick. M. Leola Butcher M. Leola Butcher, 99, of Damascus, died Thursday, Feb. 26, at Montgomery General Hospital, Olney. She was the wife of the late Grover C. Butcher. Born Aug. 9, 1898, at Clagettsville, she was a daughter of the late Basil Edward and Mary R. Brashears Moxley. Mrs. Butcher was a homemaker and a lifetime member of Montgomery United Methodist Church, Damascus. She was an avid flower and vegetable gardener. Survivors include four children, Dorothy L. Hobman of Sarasota, Fla., Hazel M. Duvall of Damascus, Paul C. Butcher of Montgomery, Ala. and Clifford E. Butcher of Brandon, Fla.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two step- great-grandchildren. Mrs. Butcher was predeceased by a brother, Roscoe Moxley. The family received friends on March 1 at the Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus, where funeral services were held on March 2, with the Rev. Ernest Bortner officiating. Burial was in Montgomery Methodist Cemetery, Damascus. Jennifer Lee Majack Jennifer Lee Majack, 37, of Rockville died Feb. 8 at her home. The cause of death was unavailable. Born April 6, 1960, in Geneva, N.Y., she was a wife, mother and college student pursuing a degree in psychology and criminal law at Montgomery College. She worked an internship with mentally handicapped residents of Montgomery County. She is survived by her husband, Stan Majack; children Daniel and David Rainwater and Anna Majack; stepson Daniel R. Majack; her mother, Sara Sanderson of South Carolina; three sisters, Cindy James, Marilyn Griffin and Dixie Alprin; and one brother, Jeff Sanderson. She was predeceased by her father, Alan Sanderson. Vada May Armstrong Vada May Armstrong, 87, of Gaithersburg died Feb. 27 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. She was born in Denton, N.C., and had been the valedictorian in her senior year of high school. She served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-51, and was retired from the Hecht Co. in 1972. She is survived by her daughter Michele Kloker and her husband Robert Kloker of Gaithersburg; grandson Leonard Armstrong and his wife Tracey Armstrong; granddaughter Vicki Cressell; great-granddaughter Mikayla Armstrong; great- grandson Jeremy Cressell; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association. *****Mar. 11, 1998***** Elizabeth Gude Doonan Elizabeth Gude Doonan, 78, a Derwood resident, died March 6 at Collingswood Nursing Home in Rockville. She had contracted pneumonia after a long illness. Elizabeth Gude was born in Washington, D.C., and moved to the Rockville area as a child. She graduate from Rockville High School and St. Mary's Female Seminary, now St. Mary's College, in St. Mary's City, Md. She married John W. Doonan, and the couple had five children. From 1957 to 1960 and from 1965 to 1969 they lived in Central and South America, where Mr. Doonan was a pilot for a company constructing the Pan-American Highway. Upon her return from Rockville, Mrs. Doonan helped to operate A. Gude Sons Co., her family's florist, nursery and landscaping business. She worked there as a floral designer and managed the company's business office until its closing in 1983. After retirement from the family business, Mrs. Doonan traveled and spent time with her family. She also owned and operated her own antique business, The Wisteria Vine in downtown Gaithersburg. She was a trustee for the Montgomery County Historical Society and a longtime volunteer for the Christ Episcopal Church Bargain Box. She is survived by four of her children, Inez Glover and James Doonan, both of Damascus, Frank Doonan of Jinzhou, China, and Elizabeth Doonan of Silver Spring; her brother, former U.S. Rep. Gilbert Gude of Bethesda; and 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson. She was predeceased by her husband, her brother Adolph E. Gude Jr., formerly of Potomac, and her eldest son, John Gilbert Doonan, formerly of Wheaton, Ill. Friends were received Monday at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home in Rockville, where funeral services were held Tuesday. Interment was at Rockville Union Cemetery. Lillian Gloyd Offutt Lillian Gloyd Offutt, 92, died Feb. 28 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda after a long illness. Mrs. Offutt was born and educated in Gaithersburg. She was the oldest daughter of the large family of Margaret Arnold and Henry Dorsey Gloyd. She married William M. Offutt of Garrett Park in 1928, and they had two sons before he died of Rocky Mountain spotted tick fever in 1938. After her husband's death, Mrs. Offutt returned to a job at the Library of Congress. In 1940 she bought the house at 4420 East West Highway where she lived for the rest of her life. When the National Naval Medical Center opened in 1943, Mrs. Offutt accepted a position as head of the crew's library, and transferred to the patients' record office after World War II. She worked at the hospital until her retirement. Mrs. Offutt was active in her church and as a volunteer at Suburban Hospital and the Thrift Shop. She is survived by her sons, William Offutt of Bethesda and Thomas Lee Offutt of Harper's Ferry, W.Va.; one sister, Rita Gloyd of Rockville; and one brother Paul Gloyd of Bethesda; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services were held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Bethesda on March 3. Interment is at the Darnestown Presbyterian Church's cemetery. Eva Irene Ward Eva Irene Ward, 87, of Rockville died Feb. 24 at Shady Grove Nursing Center in Rockville. She was born March 25, 1910, in Hagerstown, Md. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Ward is survived by four daughters, Joyce Lowe of Rockville, Bertha Sullivan of Falls Church, Va., Shirley Ward of Gaithersburg and Carolyn Ward of Mt. Airy; and 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren. A memorial service was held Feb. 28 at De Vol's Funeral Home in Gaithersburg. Donations may be made in her name to Shady Grove Adventist Nursing Center. Olivia C. Norton Olivia Chatard Norton, 39, died Feb. 24 at her home in Oak Ridge, Tenn., after a long fight against cancer. Born in Baltimore, she graduated from the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore. Formerly of Gaithersburg, she moved to Oak Ridge five years ago. She was very active in CHADD, and was a member of the board of directors of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. She is survived by her husband Steve Norton; two children, David and Sarah Norton; parents Albert and Olivia Chatard of Hunt Valley; and brother Albert Chatard of Baltimore. Arvella Brown Arvella Brown, 79, formerly of Gaithersburg, died of cancer on Feb. 8 at the McGregor Nursing Home in Bluefield, Va. Born in Kirby, W.Va., she was the daughter of John Christopher and Rosie Mae Smith Shanholtzer. She moved to Bethesda in the early 1940s and owned and operated Martin's Restaurant. She later moved to Gaithersburg and opened the Club 240 restaurant in Rockville. It was later renamed The Blue Fountain Inn. She was in the restaurant business for 30 years. She moved to Wytheville, Va., in 1976, and lived in the Fort Chiswell Mansion. She owned an antique shop in Wytheville. She is survived by three sisters, Velma Peters of Kirby, W.Va., Viola Jones of Romney, W.Va., and Nadine Hudson of Middleport, Ohio; a nephew, Gary Daugherty of Kirby; and many more nieces and nephews. She was the stepmother of Barry Bryan of Gaithersburg and Larry Bryan of Frederick. Funeral services were held Feb. 11 at the Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke, Va. Helen L. Andersen Helen Lorraine Andersen, 86, of Montgomery Village died March 7 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born in Pennsylvania, she was a housewife and was active at the Gaithersburg Senior Center and 50/50 Plus Club. She had been a business partner in an automobile dealership with her husband, Niels P. Andersen. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter Lorraine Donna Pentlicki; son William N. Andersen; sisters Margaret Sabol and Kathryn Vickers; grandchildren Stephen Pentlicki and Diane Donna Gruenwald; three great- grandchildren. Born in Howard County, he was a son of the late James Clifford and Maxine Bowman Brown. Mr. Brown had served in the U.S. Marines during World War II, and had worked about 45 years as an auto mechanic for Reed Brothers in Rockville. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed golfing. He is survived by his wife Lois Combs Brown; son Marion Lee Brown Jr. of Houston; sister Beatrice Roberts of Silver Spring; mother-in-law Edna V. Wright of Gaithersburg; and nieces and nephews. Giardino Rose Mildred Giardino, 88, of Gaithersburg died March 9 at Shady Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rockville. Born in Providence, R.I., she worked as a jewelry designer and manufacturer, and a silk floral designer. Mrs. Giardino and her husband Armando Raymond Giardino were owners of Melrose Jewelry Co. of Providence. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and was active in the Italian community in Cranston, R.I. She is survived by a daughter Gail Robertshaw of Gaithersburg; brother Frank Fondi of Washington, D.C.; sister Mary Napolitano of Sterling, Va.; grandsons Michael Robertshaw and Timothy Robertshaw of Gaithersburg. Born in Vancouver, Canada, she had four years of business school. Mrs. Knode, who was the wife of the late Harold Knode, worked as a secretary. She worked several years for the British government and with the embassy of India in Washington, D.C. She retired with 25 years of service with the Montgomery County Public Schools. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg. She is survived by her sons Brian, Keith and Mark Knode; daughter Brenda Lenda; daughter-in-law Jan Knode; and son-in-law Richard Lenda. Marie Ferington Marie Ferington, 72, of Sandy Spring died March 4 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. A former German teacher at Magruder High School in Derwood, Mrs. Ferington was also a former chair of the Olney Library Advisory Committee, former chair of the District 14 Democratic Club, a member of the board of Greater Sandy Spring Green Space and a member of Sandy Spring Friends Meeting. She is survived by a brother, William Warmbrodt; two daughters, Judith Ferington Strenio and Esther Ferington; and four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Andrew, Stephen and Sarah Strenio. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Spring Friends Meeting House. Benjamin J. Scrivens Benjamin J. Scrivens, 80, of Olney died Feb. 25 at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was the husband of the late Ruth W. Scrivens. Mr. Scrivens, a longtime resident of Olney, was the son of the late Benjamin and Alice McGarry Scrivens. He is survived by three sons, Patrick Scrivens of Potomac, Michael Scrivens of Kensington and Brian Scrivens of Coloca, Md.; three daughters, Penny Scrivens Chiville of Baltimore, Shelly Hawksford of Rockville and Susan Fix of Georgia; 11 grandchildren; and a special friend, Alva Cohen and family. Frank S. Depro The Rev. Frank S. Depro, 83, of Baltimore, died Monday, March 9, at home. He was the husband of Bernice J. Depro. Born Aug. 18, 1914, at Cumberland, he was a son of the late Albert E. and Anna Elizabeth Halley Depro. Rev. Depro was a graduate of Westminster Theological Seminary and had served in the following churches in the Baltimore Conference of the United Methodist Church: Broadway, Relay, Exeter Memorial and Hillsdale-Chatsworth. He came to Damascus in 1961, serving at Damascus UMC from 1961 to 1968 and Damascus/Friendship from 1969 until his retirement in 1980. In 1978 he received the John Wesley Award of Merit for outstanding service. Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Elizabeth A. Grove of Buckeystown and Judith A. Holley of Apex, N.C,; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Alvona Simpson of Severna Park and Elizabeth Evans of Florence, Ala. Carrico Timothy Lloyd Carrico, 38, of Westminster, died Saturday, March 7, at University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Baltimore, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was the husband of Tammy Lynne Kauffman Carrico. Born Dec. 23, 1959, in Montgomery County, he was a son of George W.R. and Annie H. McDaniel Carrico of Libertytown. Mr. Carrico was a 1978 graduate of Damascus High School. He was employed with Timbers of Troy, a golf course in Columbia. He had previously worked at Willow Springs Golf Course in Ellicott City. He was an avid fisherman and golfer. Surviving besides his wife are a son, Brock Allyn Carrico; a sister, Elizabeth Carrico of Moorefield, W.Va.; a brother, Lloyd Richard Carrico of Indianapolis, Ind.; and maternal grandmother, Trella McDaniel of Jerome, Pa. Harrison, 67, of Mount Airy, died Wednesday, March 4, at home. Born July 31, 1930, in Howard County, he was a son of the late William N. and Mildred M. Phebus Harrison. He was a farmer. Survivors include four sisters, Esther M. Hilton of Woodbine, Lucy R. Webb of Frederick, Virginia Knight of Mount Airy and Mary Ann Gregg of Damascus; and a number of other relatives. The family received friends on March 6 at the Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus, where funeral services were held on March 7, with the Rev. Wallace Lusk officiating. Burial was in Jennings Chapel Cemetery, Florence. Fred J. Hughes Jr. Fred John Hughes Jr., formerly of Poolesville, Chevy Chase and Potomac, died Feb. 1 in Savannah, Ga. He was 79. Hughes graduated from the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the ROTC and later became a major in the U.S. Army in 1940. He served in the Seventh Cavalry and on the staff of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, receiving the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After the war, he opened Miller-Hughes Motor Company in Rockville. An ardent horseman, he was a top male rider in the Washington area, holding many jumping records with his horse "Black Cady." His horsemanship and love of the Cavalry led to a meeting with August Busch Jr. He then became the Washington area district manager for Budweiser in 1950. In 1970 he was offered the Budweiser District distributorship and opened Hughes and Hughes of Savannah, Inc. He was enshrined in the Maryland Horse Show Association Hall of Fame in 1986. Survivors include a son, Fred Hughes III, of Savannah; a daughter, Robin J. Hughes of Rincon; a brother, Francis Hughes of Hilton Head; a sister, Doris Hughes Miller of Silver Spring; and a grand- daughter, Kari Hughes of Rabun Gap. Moschetto, 82, of Gaithersburg died March 15 at Mariner Health of Bethesda. Born in Chicago, she had worked as a bookkeeper. She is survived by her husband Albert Moschetto; son Larry Milanich; daughters Lorraine Barnett and Sharon Lynch; eight grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Canchola, 71, of Rockville died March 15 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. The cause of death was unavailable. He was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Sonora, Mexico. Dr. Canchola was an alumnus of Johns Hopkins University and was a medical officer for the Food and Drug Administration. He had been a professor of microbiology and pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, and did research work in viruses at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He is survived by his wife, Aida S. Canchola; five children, Julia, Angela, Isabel, Raphael and Rebecca; one brother; and one sister. He was predeceased by one son, Joseph D. Canchola. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at De Vol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive in Gaithersburg. Olsavsky, 87, of Brookeville, formerly of Rockville, died March 12 at Brooke Grove Nursing Home in Sandy Spring. Born Jan. 10, 1911, in Illinois, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Tessie Lehrke Smart. Twice married, she was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Ross, and her second husband, Joseph Olsavsky. Mrs. Olsavsky had worked as a procurement clerk for the U.S. Coast Guard before retirement. She was of the Protestant faith. She is survived by a daughter, Harriett Ross Dailey and her husband Bob of Frederick; a son, Robert B. Ross and his wife Diane of Brookeville; seven grandchildren, Connie R. Blaine of Brookeville, Edward J. Ross of Olney, James R. Ross of Berkley Springs, West Va., and Robert E. Dailey III, Douglas A. Dailey, G. Scott Failey and Stuart R. Dailey, all of Frederick; 11 great- grandchildren; and one nephew and two nieces. She was predeceased by a brother, Gordon Smart. Funeral services were held Monday at Muriel H. Ponds Jr., 69, of Brookeville, died March 10 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. He was the husband of Betty J. Ponds. Born Jan. 8, 1929, in Louisiana, he was a son of the late Delia and Richard J. Ponds Sr. Mr. Ponds graduated from Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore and received his engineering degree from the University of Maryland. He had worked as a mechanical engineer at Vitro Laboratories in Aspen Hill for approximately 20 years. After retirement he began his own consulting firm, VPR. Mr. Ponds was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Brighton, where he served as a lay reader. He was a member of the American Legion in Brookeville and the Goshen Hounds, and was considered the champion chicken fryer for the annual Montgomery General Hospital picnic-bazaar. He was a helicopter pilot during the Korean War. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard J. Ponds III of Stevensville, Md.; four step-children, Peter Watkins of Derwood, Sara Watkins of Bethesda, Timothy Watkins of Middleburg, Va., and Susan Watkins of Takoma Park; and three grandchildren. Laporte, 73, of Germantown, died March 7 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. He was the husband of the late Lula Laporte. Born Nov. 18, 1924, in Massachusetts, Mr. Laporte served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had worked at Montgomery Vault in Rockville for approximately five years and also had worked as a maintenance supervisor in Lakeforest mall in Gaithersburg. He was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by three step-children: Gladys Hall of Phoenix, Ariz., Clarence O'Dell of Prince Frederick, Md. and Barbara L. Fossett of Frederick; a foster brother, Ray Morgan of N. Palm Beach, Fla. and a special friend, Richard Walters of Germantown. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by a stepson, Bruce O'Dell. Walters Joseph B. Walters, 77, of Rockville died March 22 at Mediplex in Montgomery Village. He was born Nov. 14, 1920, in Virginia, and had been a maintenance worker with the Montgomery County highway department. He is survived by six children, James Joseph Walters, Laura Bell Pritchard, Charles Wade Walters, Susan Ann Welch, Jan Loretta Saah and Mark Anthony Anderson; two brothers; two sisters; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great- grandchildren. Gray Schreiber, 72, died of colon cancer March 20 at her home in Rockville. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Schreiber attended New York University. She moved to the Washington area during World War II to enlist in the Army Nurse Cadet Corps. She received nursing training at the Providence Hospital Division of Catholic University. Professional assignments included working the premature nursery at Columbia Hospital for Women and serving as clinic manager for the Montgomery County health department. She also served as assistant director of Manor Care Nursing Home in Adelphi. Following her nursing career, Mrs. Schreiber established Individual Interiors, a residential interior design firm. Her interests included watercoloring and gardening. Mrs. Schreiber is survived by her husband of 19 years, Robert L. Schreiber of Rockville; five children from her first marriage to the late Dr. H. William Gray, Brian W. Gray of Toronto, Canada, Stephen J. Gray of London, England, Kevin D. Gray of Darien, Conn., and Lorraine M. Gray and Brenda Gray Reny, both of the Boston area; and 14 grandchildren. Helen T. Russell Helen T. Russell, 85, of Germantown, died Sunday, March 8. She was the wife of the late S.A. Russell. Born Feb. 22, 1903, at Hope, Ark., she was a daughter of the late George W. and Mary Sue Love Woolsey. Survivors include a son, George A. Russell of Friendship; four daughters, Marcia Stroble of Live Oak, Fla., Bobbie Ashrook of Lutz, Fla., Tricia Russell Cosner of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Pamela Fee of Germantown; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The family received friends March 12 at the Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus, where services were held March 13. Burial was in Washington National Cemetery. Kenneth R. Amoss Kenneth R. Amoss, 57, of Damascus, died Monday, March 16, at home. He was the husband of Alma Lou Amoss. Born May 30, 1940, at Marriottsville, he was a son of the late Stanley A. and Clara India Snowden Amoss. He was a retired traffic signal installer. Surviving besides his wife are two children, Susan Chapman and Laura Getz, both of Lusby; one grandchild; seven brothers, Earl Amoss of Frederick, Howard Amoss of Reading, Pa., Robert Amoss of Rocky Ridge, Richard Amoss of Detour, Norman Amoss of Panama City, Fla., Roy Amoss of Ellicott City and Lloyd Amoss of Mount Airy; and three sisters, Doris Gassaway of Mount Airy, Mary Gayer of Ellicott City and Gail Ridenour of Gaithersburg. Mr. Amoss was predeceased by a sister, Grace Shaw, and two brothers, Stanley A. Amoss Jr. and Russell Amoss. Memorial services were held on March 20 at First Baptist Church of Damascus, with the Rev. Moon, 88, of Spring Arbor, Mich., died March 19 at the Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio, after a period of failing health. Born in Gaithersburg, she was the daughter of the late McKendree R. and Edna F. Garrett Fulks. She was a graduate of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich., with a degree in elementary education. She taught in the Northwest School District in Jackson, Mich., from where she retired in 1974. She was a member of the Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church, the Michigan Education Association and, following retirement, enjoyed traveling in the United States, Europe and Japan. She is survived by two sons Dr. Henry W. Moon and his wife Joanne of Sanford, Mich., and Edward G. Moon and his wife Janet of Mantua, Ohio; one brother McKendree G. Fulks of Gaithersburg; one sister Frances F. Rogers of Charlottesville, Va.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held at the Rockville Free Methodist Church on March 24. Burial was in Forest Oak Cemetery in Gaithersburg. Mary Ellen Cashell Rabbitt Mary Ellen Cashell Rabbit, 84, of Silver Spring, formerly of Rockville and Annapolis, died March 16 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born Feb. 19, 1914, on the Cashell family farm in Olney, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Mable Barnsley Cashell. Mrs. Rabbitt was the wife of the late Bruce L. Rabbitt, who predeceased her in 1988. She was a graduate of Sherwood High School and a lifelong and founding member of Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church in Olney. She was a benefactor for the restoration of the Oakdale Emory Chapel. Mrs. Rabbitt retired after 30 years of service as a clerical employee with the national headquarters of the Machinist Union of America. Mrs. Rabbitt is survived by a brother, Arthur D. Cashell of Silver spring; a nephew, James Duncan Cashell of Maine; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held March 19 at Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church. Interment was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Aspen Hill. Funeral arrangements were handled by Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home.
