Shelton Hazel J. Shelton, 71, of Mount Airy, died March 23, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Lebanon Fellowship Church, Damascus. Born June 15, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Alice Frye Frampton. Twice married, she was the wife of the late Robert Wilson Lehman Jr. She is survived by her second husband, Sherman V. Shelton. In addition to her husband, she is survived by six children, Arnold Lehman of San Ramone, Calif., Robert W. Lehman of Damascus, Loretta Ayers of Martinsville, Va., Allen Lehman of Rockville, Leonard Lehman of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and James Lehman of Somerset; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bert Frampton of Somerset and Dora Kline of Butler, Pa. The family received friends March 25 at Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus. Services were held March 26 at Mount Lebanon Fellowship Church, Damascus. Burial was in Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville. Norman H. Campbell Norman H. Campbell, 64, of Damascus died March 24, 1998, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. He taught at Sherwood High School for 22 years, retiring in 1986. Born Dec. 6, 1933, at Stanford, W.Va., he was a son of the late Herbert Campbell and Ursula Woolwine Campbell Bradley. Mr. Campbell graduated from Meadow Bridge High School in 1951. He received a bachelor's degree from Concord College, W.Va.; a master's degree from Marshall University, W. Va.; and a doctorate degree from the University of Maryland. Mr. Campbell began his teaching career at Meadow Bridge in 1956 and moved to Montgomery County in 1965. He began teaching at Sherwood in 1964. He is survived by his wife, Ava Lucy Campbell; two sons, Douglas Campbell of Jacksonville, Fla., and Gregory Campbell of Frederick; two grandchildren; and one brother, Dr. Roy Campbell of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Yogi Clay. The family received friends March 26 at Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus. Services and burial took place at Rainelle, W.Va. Wayne N. Scott Wayne Norris Scott, 51, formerly of Damascus, died Jan. 10, 1998, at his home at Tucson, Ariz. Born July 21, 1946, he was a son of the late Donald N. and Helen A. Miller Scott. Mr. Scott was a graduate of Damascus High and had lived in Tucson for a number of years. A graveside memorial service was held March 25 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, with the Rev. Gladys Marie Lloyd Glayds Marie Lloyd, 79, of Derwood died March 31 at the Collingswood Nursing Center in Rockville. Born in Halifax County, Va., she was a homemaker. She is survived by her sons Donald Karmel of Bowie, James Lloyd of Reston, Va., John Lloyd of Gaithersburg, and Joseph Lloyd of Lakewood, Calif.; daughters Mary Williams and Christine Miller, both of Gaithersburg; brother, Edward Thomasson of Tennessee; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Nehouse Mildred A. Nehouse, 88, formerly of Damascus, died March 30, 1998, at Citizens Nursing Home, Frederick. She had worked as a seamstress with the Montgomery County Public Schools in Rockville. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Cedar Grove, the Alpha Sunday School class and the United Methodist Women. Born Sept. 25, 1909, in Long Corner, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Francis and Erma Valyetta Heffner DeGrange. She was the wife of the late William J. Nehouse and was also preceded in death by six brothers and sisters, Blanche M. Mullineaux, Howard T. DeGrange, Ruth D. DeGrange, Helen L. Hardy, Buryle K. DeGrange and Austin A. DeGrange. Russell Sr. Glenn William Russell Sr., 70, of Damascus, died March 31, 1998, at his home. He was an accountant with the U.S. government and served with the U. S. Navy during World War II. Born Aug. 1, 1929, in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late Harry J. and Delia Marie Murray Russell. He is survived by his wife, Mary C. Dodson Jr., 76, formerly of Monrovia, died April 2, 1998, at Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin. Mr. Dodson was the retired owner/operator of Dodson Texaco in Rockville. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 86 of Rockville and VFW Post 7234 in Delaware. Born May 19, 1921, at Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late John T. Dodson Sr. and Elizabeth Putnam Dodson. He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Dodson; three sons, John T. Dodson III of Germantown, Russell E. Dodson of Mount Airy and James G. Dodson of Monrovia; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Pape of Marietta, Ga. Blank Margaret Anne Blank, 60, of Springdale Township, Pa., died April 5 in West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa. Born in Oil City, Pa., she was a 1956 graduate of Oil City High School and 1959 graduate of West Penn Hospital School of Nursing. She went on to work at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, and later in the obstetrics department at Citizens General Hospital in New Kensington, Pa. She was a member of St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church in Springdale and the Transplant Recipient International Organization. She is survived by her husband, Denis A. "Pep" Blank; son, Denis A. "Pepper" Blank Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren; mother, Agnes Armstrong Lauer of Englewood, Fla.; and sisters, Jean Ralston of Silver Spring and Joan Donovan of Gaithersburg. She was predeceased by her father, Leo H. Lauer; and daughter, Kathleen Wagle. Mr. Boone was born in Virginia and was a son of the late French R. and Miran McLaughlin Boone. He was a Realtor. He is survived by his wife, Helen Brown Boone; son, John T. Scee Edward Francis Scee, 81, of Gaithersburg died April 6 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born in Watertown, N.Y., he had worked as a second-level manager for the telephone company. Mr. Lyles is survived by his wife, Alberta Lyles; daughters, Joyce Gray of Raleigh, N.C., Sharon Williams of Fort Washington, Vanessa Darden of Clinton, and June Nolan, Geraldine Garnett and Kelly Lyles, all of Gaithersburg; sons, Irving Nolan and Troy Nolan, both of Gaithersburg; a number of grandchildren; sisters, Louise Nickens of Rockville and Norma Lyles of Urbana; and brothers, Bishop Merle Lyles of Ijamsville and George Lyles of Damascus. Mrs. Clay worked at Tom & Ray's Restaurant in Damascus before becoming a licensed practical nurse. She retired from Frederick Memorial Hospital and was a member of Thurmont United Methodist Church. Born March 18, 1933, in Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Ralph Wise and Lillian Zigler Emswiler. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Clay; daughter, Carolyn Jacobs of Damascus; sons, Mickey Clay of Damascus and Gary Clay of Olney; and five grandchildren. Jarvis Elmer Thomas Jarvis, 88, of Adamstown, died April 6, 1998 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Mr. Jarvis was a member of Ridgeville Pentecostal Church, Mt. Airy. He bowled with the Wednesday Night Bowling League at the Terrace Lanes, Frederick, and was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. Born Feb. 5, 1910, at Hamilton, Va., he was a son of the late Jack and Nellie Hamilton Jarvis. He was employed with E. Brooke Lee, a Damascus area farmer. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Marie Verts Jarvis; 11 children, Elmer Lee Jarvis of Monrovia, Patricia Ann Koontz of Jefferson, Mary Evelyn Fox of Cascade, Larry Gene Jarvis of Walkersville, Mabel Catherine Knight of Frederick, Donald Eugene Jarvis of Adamstown, Robert Thomas Jarvis of Frederick, Linda Marie Abrecht of Walkersville, Phyllis June Jarvis of Walkersville, and Sylvia Jean Summer of Adamstown; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Burns Laura Louise Burns, 83, of Frederick, died Monday, April 6, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Alfred C. Burns. Born Aug. 27, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edwin P. Morris. Survivors include six children, Buddy Matthews and Billy Matthews, both of Frederick, Bucky Matthews of Grasonville, Patsy Maxwell of Laurel, Anne Treanor of Frederick, and Larry Burns of Ijamsville; seven grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; and a half-brother, John Morris of Washington, D.C. Dech, 78, of Gaithersburg died April 3, 1998, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Schaeffer Dech. She is survived by her daughters, Lois Dech Robertson and Diane Elyse Cockrell; grandson Brian Russell Cockrell; and sons-in-law Joel Mark Cockrell and Stephen Holmes Robertson. Deppa James Walter Deppa, 89, of Gaithersburg died April 9 in his home. Mr. Deppa had lived in the Gaithersburg area with his wife, the late Louise Lange Deppa, since 1947, when they moved from Silver Spring to establish and run a retail nursery business, Country Gardens, which he and his wife operated until the mid-1960s while they raised their family. Born in Costello, Pa., and raised in Jamestown, N.Y., Mr. Deppa graduated from Michigan State College in 1932 with a degree in forestry, and joined the U.S. Forest Service in Arizona on the Crook National Forest. Married in 1935, the Deppas settled in Gallup, N.M., and were immersed in Navajo life, since Mr. Deppa was the engineer at Nakai-bito, building large earth-fill dams for erosion control, and supervising forestry projects and surveys on the 17 million acre Navajo reservation. A move to Albuquerque, N.M., followed his promotion to head forester at Rio Grande Watershed, Soil Conservation Service. A position in the War Production Board Lumber Division brought the family to Washington, D.C., in 1943. After his retirement from the nursery business in 1966, Mr. Deppa worked as a teacher, management consultant and real estate agent. In 1990, he published "The Marriage That Did Succeed for Mary, Queen of Scots," a book about the origins of the Deppa family name in 16th century Scotland, and about life in the Borders and in the Edinburgh area before and during Mary's reign. His lifelong interests included horticulture, writing, piano, archaeology, anthropology, geology, mathematics, the origin of language and speech, business and finance, landscape design, real estate investment, and participation in the activities and support of Grace United Methodist Church, where he chaired the music committee and played the carillon for many years. He is survived by four children, Bruce Northrup Deppa of Darnestown, Ellen Deppa Jojala of Edgewood, N.M., Roy Walter Deppa of Brookeville, and Martha Deppa Kirkpatrick of Sterling, Va.; six grandchildren, Brian Northrup, Susan Norlene, Janetta Michelle, Taylor Hayes Tracy, Scott Lange Kirkpatrick and Kevin James Kirkpatrick; and two great-grandchildren, Ian McDermott Deppa and Catherine Adrienne Deppa. A memorial service was held April 13 at Grace United Methodist Church. Mr. Deppa's ashes were buried beneath a monument in Forest Oak Cemetery in Gaithersburg. Read Nicholas C. Read, 81, a pioneer documentary filmmaker who has received many awards in America and abroad, died April 1 at his home in Chevy Chase. Mr. Read was born in Montgomery, Ala. and attended Kent School in Connecticut. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. As a special war correspondent, he filmed military operations at Normandy and in Italy, Yugoslavia and Greece during World War II, and produced films for the United Nations and the Canadian Film Board. After the war he established and directed the Southern Educational Film Production Service in Athens, Ga., making films on health and welfare problems in southern states. He came to Washington on assignments from the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery of the U.S. Navy, and as films officer in the Office of the Surgeon General of the Public Health Service. He headed Potomac Film Producers in the District and was a founder of the Washington Film Council (now the Washington Film and Video Council) and one of its first presidents. He was visiting professor of the Cinema Department at the University of Southern California, and founded, and for six years directed, the film and TV program at Howard University in Washington. His films have won awards from American Film Festival, the Boston International Film Festival, the Biennale di Venezia, the Edinborough Film Festival and others. Survivors include his wife, Dallas Johnson Read of Chevy Chase; a son, Nash Read of Montreal, Canada; a daughter, Rebecca Read Medrano of the District; and six grandsons. Arrangements were handled by Rapp Funeral Services in Silver Spring. *****Apr. 22, 1998***** Reppard M. Hinely Reppard M. Hinely, 94, of Olney died April 5 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born Dec. 11, 1903, in Springfield, Ga., he was a son of the late John and Effie Rahn Hinely. Mr. Hinely was educated at Sparks College in Sparks, Ga., and Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. He retired in 1968 from the D.C. transit administration as a depot clerk, where he worked for 33 years. His hobbies included gardening and bird watching. In addition to his wife, Leona M. Hinely, to whom he had been married for 60 years, he is survived by one daughter, Nancy L. Johnston of Woodbine; two sons, Douglas M. Hinely of Derwood and Gregory R. Hinely of Silver Spring; one granddaughter; five grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and a sister, Zelma Coursey of Decatur, Ga. Funeral services were held April 9 at the Muriel H. Dougherty Sherry L. Dougherty, 52, of Montgomery Village died April 19, 1998, of breast cancer at her home. She was a teacher and a co-owner/operator with her husband Frank J. Dougherty of Postnet Postal and Business Services in Germantown. Mrs. Dougherty, who held a master's degree in elementary education, served as a substitute teacher at Lake Seneca Elementary School in Germantown. She also was a member of the Germantown Chamber of Commerce. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Geoffrey R. Dougherty of Memphis, Tenn.; daughter, Christy L. Harris of McLean, Va.; brother, Robert C. Ellis of Dayton, Ohio; and parents, John and Margaret Ellis of Monroeville, Pa. Teunis Edna Marie Teunis, 89, formerly of Kensington, died April 17, 1998 at Montgomery General Hospital, Olney. She was the wife of the late Willard J. Teunis. Born July 9, 1908, in Portal, N.D., she was a daughter of the late Thomas A. and Agnes Patrina Larson Nelson. Survivors include a son, Herman J. Teunis of Damascus; two grandchildren, Jonathan H. Teunis of Frederick and Jeremy W. Teunis of Boston, Mass.; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Esther Holste of Rio Rancho, N.M., Sadie Kreilkamp of Cambridge, Mass., and Suzanne Dodd of Livermore, Calif.; and one brother, George Nelson of Las Vegas, Nev. Mrs. Teunis was preceded in death by a son, William N. Teunis; a sister, Ethel Jensen; and two brothers, Neal Nelson and Thomas Nelson. Schommer, 89, a furrier who specialized in the design, care, cleaning, and maintenance of furs, died of prostate cancer March 28 at his home at Springvale Terrace in Silver Spring, Maryland. Schommer retired about 1980 after having worked at various fur shops in Washington, including Ehrlebachers and as a consultant to Gartenhaus Furs. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Schommer was in the dry-cleaning business in Minneapolis before World War II. In 1941, he moved to Washington, D.C., to work as a researcher and professor at the National Institute of Drycleaning. He was also a noted authority on the care and cleaning of specialty fabrics.Schommer served in various capacities as an officer of the furrier's union and was a past president. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Silver Spring, where he also was a lector at Masses and a member of the Holy Name Society and St. Michael's Men's Club. He was head lector at Holy Cross Hospital. He was a fourth-degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Washington Assembly and a member of the Order of the Alhambra. His wife of 38 years, Helen Marie Guerin Schommer, died in 1982. Survivors include their five daughters, Kathleen M. Mahoney Robert Paul Mahoney, 69, of Macon, Ga., formerly of Frederick, died April 20, 1998, at Medical Center of Central Georgia, Macon. Mr. Mahoney was retired from Geico Insurance Co. and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Warner Robins, Ga. Born Oct. 9, 1928, at Frederick, he was a son of the late Joseph Paul and Mary Roelke Mahoney. He is survived by his wife, Hilda E. Mahoney; three daughters, Karen Altmire of Damascus, Stephanie Wilson of Germantown and the Rev. Melissa Mahoney of Arnold; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The family received friends April 23 at Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick. Services were held April 24 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Gaithersburg. The Rev, Ray Scheck, of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Damascus, assisted by Good Shepherd minister Pastor Rebecca Heber, officiated. Burial followed in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, with Pastor Tom Williamson performing the service. Barber Fannie Watkins Barber, 84, of Silver Spring, formerly of Cedar Grove, died April 17, 1998, at Seminole, Fla. Mrs. Barber was associated with the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, the Damascus Lions Club and other community activities. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Gaithersburg. Born June 5, 1913, at Damascus, she was a daughter of the late Harry H. and Margaret A. Musgrove Brown. She was the wife of Estel Barber. Her first husband, Guy D. Watkins, died in 1988. Surviving besides her husband are six sisters, Margaret Koontz of Frederick, Ruth Stinchcomb of Glen Burnie, Annie Bear of Ormond, Fla., and Ethel Wilmer, Mildred Calvert and Violet Floor, all of Baltimore; and three brothers, George Brown and Bernard Brown, both of Glen Burnie, and Howard Brown of Annapolis. Mrs. Barber was preceded in death by four brothers, Archie Brown, Wilbur Brown, Roy Brown and William Brown. The family received friends April 22 at the Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus. Services were held April 23 at Upper Seneca Baptist Church, Cedar Grove, with the Rev. Thomas Doubt officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Arthur L. Shifflett Sr. Arthur L. Shifflett Sr., 83, of Poolesville, died April 25, 1998, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. He was the husband of the late Reva M. Shifflett and the son of the late John W. and Matilda Shifflett. Survivors include seven children, Arthur L. Shifflett Jr. of Florida, Viola M. Ricketts of South Carolina, Edgar A. Shifflett of Virginia, Thomas G. Shifflett of Poolesville, Henry E. Odom of West Virginia and Charles E. Shifflett and Talmadge Shifflett, both of Damascus; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Magruder Carolyn E. Magruder, 69, of Washington Grove died April 22. She is survived by her husband, Donald E. Magruder; children, Jimmy Magruder, Susie Bowman, Sandy Spencer and Alice Jarvis; sisters, Mary O. Warfield and Jane Kilby; brother, Arnold Stull; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Osborne Ruby Grace Osborne, 66, of Livingstone Terrace in Frederick and formerly of the Gaithersburg and Rockville areas, died April 22 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born in Mountain City, Tenn., she was the daughter of the later James A. and Curly Blanche Osborne. Miss Osborne was employed at Roy's Place in Gaithersburg for 35 years. She was an avid fan of the Washington Capitols, Baltimore Orioles and Washington Redskins. She is survived by her step-mother, Hazel Irene Osborne of Mountain City; two daughters, Linda S. Norris and her husband John of Frederick, and Cynthia J. Curtis of Frederick; two sons, William G. Osborne and his wife Esther of Bethesda and James R. Osborne and his wife Sharon of Frederick; four granddaughters, Jennifer Norris, Kimberly Boyer, Katelyn Osborne and Christine Osborne; three great-grandchildren, Jacob Norris, Molly Norris and Kayin Boyer; two sisters, Bonnie Louise Mills of Rockville and Catherine Mae Trivett of Mountain City; three brothers, William Ernest Osborne and James A. Osborne, both of Mountain City, and Homer Paul Osborne of Thurmont; and a special sister-in- law, Mary Margaret Osborne of Mountain City. She was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Ruth Woods, and brother, Glenn Franklin Osborne. Funeral services were held April 25 at Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick. Burial was in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick. Norman E. Payne Norman E. Payne, 50, of Germantown died April 26 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Mr. Payne was an auto mechanic at Century Ford in Rockville. Born in Potomac, he was the son of Anna L. Payne of Mount Airy and the late Clarence E. Payne. He was the husband of Betty J. Payne. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three daughters, Christine and Jennifer Payne of Germantown and Jeannette Zelaya of Damascus; a son, Charles Payne of Germantown; sisters, Florence Foster of Gaithersburg, Ellen Sands of Mount Airy, Alice Gilmore of Monrovia and Doris Ann Scheetz of Hanover, Kan.; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Molesworth Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville. Theresa Doscher Theresa Barbara Doscher, 95, a resident at Rockville Nursing Home, died peacefully in her sleep April 24. Mrs. Doscher was a native of New York City. She married Harry Doscher there in 1926. The couple and their three children later moved to West Nyack, where they built a home and Mr. Doscher established a propane gas business. After the death of her husband in 1966, Mrs. Doscher lived for a time in Wheaton, Ill., and then moved to Rockville in 1986. She was active in senior citizens affairs, an enthusiastic bowler, and enjoyed traveling. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Theresa and Lindy Gulbrandsen of Westbury, N.Y.; Joan and Elwood McKee of Rockville, and Harriet Laliotes of Winfield, Ill.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Private burial services for the family will be held in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. Margaret MacDonell Balcom Margaret MacDonell Balcom of Denver -- who grew up in the Chevy Chase town of Somerset and who was a retired Presbyterian Minster -- died Jan. 27 after being struck by a car in Denver, Colorado on her way to a meeting of the Denver Presbytery. She was 80. Born June 1, 1917 in Washington, D.C., Balcom worked as a physicist at the National Bureau of Standards from 1937 to 1969. She then switched careers to church work, becoming the first female Deacon at the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church in 1971. In 1975, she was ordained a Presbyterian minister in Elkhart, Indiana. With a bachelor's degree in psychology from The George Washington University and a master's of divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, Ms. Balcom retired in 1985 after 10 years of ministry at churches west of the Mississippi River, but continued active participation in the Denver Presbytery. Ms. Balcom is survived by her sister, Harriet Ellis of Roxbury, Vt.; two nephews, Carl Ellis of Randolph, Vt. and David Ellis of Roxbury; and two grandnephews of Randolph. She was the sister of the late Robert Wilfred Balcom of Chevy Chase. A memorial service is scheduled for April 29 at 1 p.m. at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, 1 Chevy Chase Circle, NW, Washington, D.C., with interment at Rock Creek Cemetery, Rock Creek Church Rd. and Webster St., NW, Washington, DC. John A. Nasuti John A. Nasuti of Bethesda, a retired field representative and supervisor of Equifax, died of pneumonia April 24 at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He was 70. A Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School graduate who served in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Nasuti worked for Equifax, formerly Retail Credit Corp., for 40 years, retiring at 65. He pursued an active lifestyle, including part-time work, golf at the Montgomery Village Golf Club where he was a member of the senior's golf association, skiing, traveling and swimming at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase YMCA, where he also volunteered. Nasuti is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ellyn Nasuti; three children, Karen Nasuti of Bethesda; Patrice Gibson of Garrett Park; and Michael Nasuti of Woodstock, Md.; a twin sister, Joanne Sipe of Falls Church, Va.; a brother, Dana of Cherry Hill, NJ; and five grandchildren, Kevin, Ellyn and Charles Gibson of Garrett Park; and Brandon and Joseph Nasuti of Woodstock. Funeral services were held April 27.
