Mr. Bateman was born in Baltimore, and graduated from Loyola College. He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the State Department after 30 years of service, including foreign postings in Bonn and Frankfurt, Germany. He was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church and Menís Garden Club, both in Bethesda. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gloria A. Bateman of Bethesda; six children, Sharon Addabbo of Kensington, Frances Shroyer of Germantown, Jeffrey Bateman of Darnestown, Gerald Bateman of Southern Pines, N.C., Lisa Carroll of Bethesda, and Kimberlee Couch of Crofton; and 12 grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Pumphreyís Funeral Home in Bethesda. He is inurned at Arlington National Cemetery. Amelia B. Eisel County resident Amelia B. Eisel of Gaithersburg died April 24, 2000. Mrs. Eisel was the beloved wife of the late John K. Eisel Sr., and loving mother to John K. Eisel Jr. and Debra G. Fergus. She is survived by two sisters, Bella M. Struntz and Beulah Brining; and a brother Nelson Holsinger. She was preceded in death by a brother Gordon Holsinger. She is also survived by two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services were held April 26 at DeVol Funeral Home in Gaithersburg. Interment was in Parklawn Memorial Park. Ethel D. Herrmann County resident Mrs. Ethel D. Herrmann, 85, died March 20 at Wilson Health Care Center. A resident of Gaithersburg, Mrs. Herrmann was born in Poolesville to the late Joseph Darby and Mary Chiswell Darby. She is survived by her son, Bill Herrmann and wife Nancy of Gaithersburg; a stepdaughter, Joy Fisher; and a sister, Lutie Culp. Mrs. Herrmann was predeceased by her husband, Ferdinand K. Herrmann, and one son, Joseph F. Herrmann. Funeral services were held March 23 at Interfaith Chapel at Leisure World in Aspen Hill. Burial followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Jones Sr. Taxi company owner Lee W. Jones Sr., 94, died April 17 at Royal Palm Skilled Care Facility in Florida, where he had been a resident for the past two and a half years. He was born in Washington, D.C., and had moved to Vero Beach from Miami 20 years ago. He was retired as owner of Silver Spring Taxi Co. of Silver Spring. He was a life member of the Masonic and Elks lodges and was a Protestant. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley L. Zeiler; daughter in law, Margaret Jones Stimeling of Vero Beach; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Jones was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, E. Lucille Jones, in 1995 and son, Lee W. Jones Jr., in 1989. Private services were held April 22. Lowther Cremation Service in Vero Beach handled the arrangements. Juanita E. Miller County resident Juanita E. Miller, 78, of Mount Airy, died April 24, 2000, at Montgomery Village Care and Rehabilitation Center, Gaithersburg. She was a member of Potomac Valley Assembly of God Church, Germantown. Born in Tampa, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Marvin and Rosalea Sanders Haynes. She is survived by her husband, Claude; a son, the Rev. Randy Miller and his wife Kathy of Mount Airy; a daughter, Linda Miller of Gaithersburg; three grandchildren; and five brothers and sisters, Paul Tindle, Mickey Martindale, and Virginia Griffin, all of Plant City, Fla., Louise Jenkins of Savannah, Ga., and Joe Rogers of Germantown. Harry Ramnarine Retired concierge Harry Ramnarine, 65, died April 13 at his residence, the Claridge House in Silver Spring, of a heart attack. Ramnarine was born and raised in Guyana, where he was a customs officer. He came to the United States at the age of 50 and became a citizen in 1993. Upon his arrival in this country, he became the concierge of the Claridge House on Lyttonsville Road in Silver Spring. He retired last year. He was preceded in death by his son, Kawalldarie Ramnarine, in 1993. Survivors include his wife, Surujdaie ìAgnesî Ramnarine; children, Routie Reddy, Leela Rampersaud, Dr. Seepaul Ramnarine, Chrisnoutie Cunnane, Dhanpaul Ramnarine, Ramphal Ramnarine, Devi Persaud and Doodnauth Persaud; brother, Roopchand of Queens, N.Y.; and two grandsons. She is also survived by a brother, Bruce Douglass of Dubois, Pa., a sister, Joan Hann of Altoona, Pa.; and 12 grandchildren. Mabel B. Wagner Missionary Mabel Burdette Wagner, 87, died April 14. She and her late husband, Paul Wagner, were United Methodist missionaries who concentrated their work in India and Nepal. Born in Browningsville, she was the daughter of the late Millard D. and Ethyl King Burdette. Mrs. Wagner was a 1930 graduate of Damascus High School. She attended Asbury College and Drew University. She is survived by four sons: Robert Wagner and his wife Aileen, of Sitka, Alaska; Stanley Wagner and his wife Heather, of El Paso, Texas; David Wagner and his wife Connie, of Eugene, Ore; Mark Wagner and his wife Mara, of Boston. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two sisters Mildred Mills and Betty Garriss. Robert E. Watkins Former Goodwill chief executive officer Robert E. Watkins, 90, former chief executive officer of Goodwill Industries International and an Asbury Methodist Village resident, died April 14 at Shady Grove Hospital of complications following a stroke. Mr. Watkinsí career, which began in 1935, was with Goodwill Industries, serving as executive director of the Dayton, Ohio, and Los Angeles, Calif., units before becoming chief executive officer of the international organization in 1966. He retired in 1973. In 1991, he was elected to the Goodwill Industries Hall of Fame. Seven years later the Robert E. and Charlotte Watkins Fund for Mission Advancement was established by Goodwill Industries to honor each year a Goodwill leader that brings to fruition innovative ideas in rehabilitation services. Mr. Watkins was a resident of Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg for 23 years and had been very active in resident affairs. He is survived by his wife Charlotte, four children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. "Zeke" Watkins World War II veteran Robert H. "Zeke" Watkins, 77, formerly of Mount Airy, died April 29 at his home in Largo, Fla. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired U. S. Army master sergeant and had been an Army recruiter in Frederick and Carroll counties. He and his wife were the owners of Mount Airy Bowling Lanes from 1967 to 1976. After moving to Florida, he was employed for 13 years with Goodwill Industries as a supervisor. He was a life member of VFW in Mount Airy and a member and past commander of Gold Star Post 191 American Legion, Mount Airy. He was one of the founders of the Little League in Mount Airy and coached Little League as well as high school teams. Born Dec. 13, 1922, in Mount Airy, he was the son of the late Herman and Beatrice Chaney Watkins. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy A. Watkins; a daughter, Janet Haines and her husband Lewis of Damascus; sons Ted Watkins and his wife Peggy, of Hastings, Pa.; Chuck Watkins and his wife Joyce, of Mount Airy; and Bobby Watkins of Largo, Fla and his finance, Paula Anastasia. He is also survived by five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three step- great grandchildren. Goldup Construction worker Anthony Brian Goldup, 34, of Laurel died May 5, 2000. Born August 16, 1965 in Baltimore, he grew up in Howard County and worked in the construction business. Kuklewicz, 84, of Germantown died May 7, 2000, in Pennsylvania while visiting relatives. He graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology and served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Africa and Europe during World War II. After the war, he continued his engineering career at Fairchild Aircraft. He moved with his family to Germantown in 1966 and worked at David Taylor Model Basin Naval Ship Research and Development Center until he retired. He and his late wife Helena were active in the Germantown Citizens Association and with the Germantown Oktoberfest Committee. They were both members of Neelsville Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Kuklewicz was a trustee for many years and was recognized for his outstanding service. He served Boy Scout Troop 489 as an assistant scoutmaster and an adult leader for many years, and earned one of scouting's highest honors, the "Silver Beaver Award,"for his service. He is survived by his daughter Gwen Kuklewicz of Vermont, his son Rhys Kuklewicz of Silver Spring, and his son Mark Kuklewicz of Damascus. Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Neelsville Presbyterian Church, 20876 Frederick Road, Germantown. T. Fred Linthicum Highway maintenance supervisor T. Fred Linthicum, 75, of Thurmont, formerly of Germantown, died April 24, 2000, at his home. Mr. Linthicum worked for Liberty Milling Company and the Germantown Store, both in Germantown, and retired after 30 years as a district supervisor for the Division of Highway Maintenance in Montgomery County. Born May 16, 1924, in Germantown, he was the son of the late Grover Daniel and Mary Virginia Carlisle Linthicum. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Purdum Linthicum; children Tom Linthicum and his wife Dale of Stafford, Va., Sandy Schiffer and her husband Rob of Ocean City, and Nancy Lee and her husband Mike of Frederick; grandchildren Eli and Mary Linthicum, Sarah and Rachel Schiffer, Travis, Michael and Shannon Lee; sister-in-law Anna L. Linthicum of Clarksburg, niece Mary Ann Beall of Clarksburg, and nephew Robert Beall of Silver Spring. He is also remembered by special great-niece Karen Skidmore. He was the husband of Sheila Brooks Lyles. Born in Montgomery County on Dec. 17, 1953, he was the son of Bernard Eugene Lyles Sr. and the late Phoebe Anna Anderson Lyles. Surviving in addition to his wife and father are two sons, Michael Lyles Jr. and Rashad Lyles; a daughter, Conelita Lyles; and a stepson Jamal Palmer, all of Gaithersburg; and four grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers, Bernard E., Clayton E., Arthur K., and Harry J. Lyles; three sisters, Anna Mae Smith, Patricia Ann Lyles and Doretha Ann Lyles; two aunts; one uncle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen Virginia Applegate Hairdresser Helen Virginia Applegate, 46, of Gaithersburg, died May 3, 2000, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Born July 7, 1953, she was the daughter of Roy W. and Lacey Madeline Miller Shifflet of Montgomery Village. Ms. Applegate had worked as a hairdresser. Besides her parents, she is survived by two sons, Eric Applegate and Kyle Applegate, both of Catonsville; one sister, Patricia Rodgers of Danville, Va.; four brothers, Gordon D. Shifflet of Olney, Warren C. Shifflet of Rockville, Keith A. Shifflet of Derwood and Wade C. Shifflet of Montgomery Village. She is also survived by a half brother, Archie H. Williams of Florida. James Wesley Childers Professor Dr. James Wesley Childers, 93, of Gaithersburg died May 6, 2000, of complications from Parkinson's Disease. Dr. Childers was born in Emma, Texas, June 21, 1906. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Chicago. Dr. Childers was a retired professor of romance languages at the State University of New York at Albany, where he also was chairman of the Modern Language Department. After Congress passed the National Defense Education Act in 1958, the Modern Language Association of America selected Dr. Childers to gather information on foreign language enrollment in U. S. schools, from elementary through graduate school, for the federal government. Childers subsequently incorporated the data from his study into his book "Foreign Language Teaching in the United States," which had several printings and was translated into Japanese. Childers also authored "Tales from Spanish Picaresque Novels; A Motif-Index." In 1964, Dr. Childers was elected to the International Society for Folk Narrative Research. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Alcorn Childers of Gaithersburg; one son, John B. Childers of Alexandria, Va.; one daughter, Margaret E. Shearer of Annapolis; and two granddaughters. Mary Eleanor Hoadley Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Lt. Col. Mary Eleanor Hoadley, United States Air Force (Ret.), 90, of Gaithersburg, died of heart failure April 9, 2000, at Wilson Health Care Center. Born May 5, 1909, in Iowa, Col. Hoadley was a registered nurse. She is survived by a niece, Sharon Little of Waterloo, Iowa, and a nephew, Dennis Russell of Eureka, Mo. Col. Hoadley is also survived by seven grand nephews. Burial with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Arlington National Cemetery. Jeanne Yeatman Umbarger Elementary school teacher Jeanne Yeatman Umbarger, 70, died of cancer April 28, 2000, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Born April 1, 1930, in Greensboro, N.C., Mrs. Umbarger was an elementary school teacher for 23 years and a member of Epworth United Methodist Church. Mrs. Umbarger earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education at the University of Maryland, and earned a masters equivalency in education. Survivors include a son, Kenneth Umbarger and his wife, Kim; two daughters, Anne Gardiner, and Leigh Adamson and her husband, Gary; and nine grandchildren. A viewing was held April 30 at Devol's Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Road, Gaithersburg. Funeral services were held May 1 at Epworth United Methodist Church, Gaithersburg. Norman Edgar Weddle Retired postal worker Norman Edgar Weddle, 56, of Shanks, W.Va., died May 8, 2000, at Winchester Medical Center. Born May 28, 1943 in Floyd County, Va., Mr. Weddle was a son of the late Luther and Iva Harmon Weddle. Mr. Weddle was a retired postal worker, having worked for 32 years in Gaithersburg. He was also a Vietnam veteran. He is survived by his wife Myra Teaford Weddle; one son, Christopher Thomas Weddle and his wife Nina of Mt. Airy; one daughter, Jodi Beth Stanton and her husband James of Germantown; one step-son, Daniel Nealis of Shanks, W.Va.; one step-daughter, Nicole Nealis of Shanks, W.Va.; two sisters, Francis Louise McDaniel of Nebo, N.C., and Norma Jean Weddle of Frederick, Md. He is also survived by two brothers, Arvin Weddle of Winchester, Va., and Melvin Ronald Weddle of Monrovia, Md.; and two grandchildren. She was the wife of William Bradley Dorsey for 62 years. Born in Damascus, she was a daughter of the late Rufus Uriah Waters and the late Bertha O. Mullinix Waters Burdette. Mrs. Dorsey was a homemaker and for many years she and her husband lived in Boyds, while farming and raising their seven children. She also provided daycare for 75 children. She was an avid supporter of the Montgomery County Agricultural Center and Fair and the 4-H Club for over 50 years. She was a member of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau and very active with the Montgomery General Hospital Annual Picnic and the Barnesville Picnic Fundraisers. Surviving besides her husband are seven children, Robert W. Dorsey and his wife JoAnn of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Mary Virginia Madden and her husband James Neal of Apple Springs, Texas; Larry W. Dorsey and his wife Joann of Boyds; William E. Dorsey and his wife Nancy of Monrovia; Mack L. Dorsey of Grand Lakes, Colo.; Jean O. Purkey and JoAnn D. Bice, both of Gaithersburg. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild and one half-brother Roger L. Burdette of Germantown. Mrs. Dorsey was preceded in death by a great grandson, Bradley Thomas Bowman; two brothers, William Uriah Waters and Rufus Edwin Waters; and one half-brother Paul D. Burdette Jr. Olin L. Ana Maria Fernandez Retired secretary Ana Maria Fernandez, 74, of Silver Spring, died April 28 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. A member of St. Catherine's LaBoure Roman Catholic Church in Wheaton, Mrs. Fernandez was born in Ribota de Sajambre, Spain. She was sent to Havana, Cuba, at the age of 7 to live with relatives. She attended two years of secretarial school in Havana and worked as a secretary for her family's business for four years. She came to the United States in 1985 via Spain with her husband and son after a brief visit to Spain to reunite with her son who was sent there to live with relatives shortly after the Cuban revolution. The family lived in Washington, D.C., for several years before settling in Silver Spring. Mrs. Fernandez's survivors include her husband of 52 years, Felix B. Fernandez of Silver Spring; son, Valentine F. Fernandez, and his wife, Marie L. Fernandez, of Monrovia; sister, Avelina Blanco-Diaz who still lives in Spain; and two grandsons, Michael and Gregory Fernandez A service was held at St. Catherine's LaBoure. Interment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring. Arrangements were handled by Francis J. Collins Funeral Home in Silver Spring. Keith Jacobson Auto salesman Keith "Jake" Jacobson, 66, of Walkersville, formerly of Germantown, died of lung cancer May 15, at his home. After a stint in the U.S. Navy, he served as a Maryland State Trooper from 1955-58. Mr. Jacobson then entered the automobile business, beginning as a salesman and retiring in 1993 as a general manager. He coached American Legion baseball and was an avid golfer. Born in Cownasque Valley, Pa., he was the son of the late Harold and Augusta Neuman Jacobson. He was the husband of Mary Rachel Kelly Jacobson, his wife of 46 years. Surviving in addition to his wife are four daughters, Jeanie Turner of Mount Airy, Mitzi Stolz and her husband Steve of Walkersville, Leigh Campbell and her husband Tom of Mount Airy and Kelly Hurtt and her husband of Prescott, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mr. Jacobson was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Robert Turner. Services were held May 17 at South End Baptist Church, Frederick. The Rev. Jimmy Inman officiated. Interment followed at Mt. Mildred Jordan Musician Mildred "Mimi" Jordan, 65, of Gaithersburg, died May 16, at her home, of inflammatory breast cancer. She was the wife of 46 years of Edward L. Jordan. Born and raised in Natchitoches, La., she was the daughter of the late Otis L. and Nellie Bordelon Young. She graduated from St. Mary's High School and majored in music at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. She was an organist at St. Giles Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, Texas and at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Glen Ellyn, Ill. She was an active member of Darnestown Presbyterian Church in Darnestown and sang in the choir and was a substitute organist. Ms. Jordan taught piano, enjoyed gardening, travel, the arts, painting, cooking, golf and swimming. She also volunteered for child patterning, as well as several charitable activities and organizations, such as Public School Art Appreciation, S.O.M.E. and the National Capital Children's Museum. Surviving besides her husband are five children; Lisa Chitour of Princeton, N.J., Julie Brown of Wauwatosa, Wis., John Jordan of Potomac, Diana Jordan of Arlington, Va., and Jared "Ted Jordan of Boyds. Also surviving are nine grandchildren. A memorial service was held Saturday at the Darnestown Presbyterian Church, 15120 Turkey Foot Road, Darnestown. Anna Larson Homemaker Anna Larson died May 16 after a prolonged illness. She was a homemaker. She emigrated from Sweden at the age of 14. She is survived by her husband Gus Larson of 66 years. During her lifetime she was active in her church work, serving on the altar guild at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. She is survived by a son, Richard, a college professor in Chicago, and a daughter, Linda Wescott, a computer software engineer in Darnestown. She is also survived by three grandchildren. Julia Madelaine Mancuso County resident Julia Madelaine Mancuso, 85, of Gaithersburg, died May 15 at her residence. She was the wife of the late Joseph M. Mancuso. Born in New Haven, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Enrico and Adeline Gigantino. Surviving are three children; Elaine Dunn of Poolesville, Michael Mancuso of Idaho, and Maria Ontko of Germantown. She is also survived by five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A memorial service was held May 19 at the Hilton Funeral Home in Barnesville. Ivey Frederick Rhodes Jr. Carpenter Ivey Frederick (Boss) Rhodes Jr., 66, died May 19, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Mr. Rhodes was a retired carpenter with Local Union No. 132, Regional Council of Carpenters in Washington, D.C. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife Betty E. Rhodes. He is also survived by two daughters; Emma F. Burdette of Brunswick, Md., and Hannah M. Murphy of Mt. Morris, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Dixie Walter of Gaithersburg and Thelma Norris of Rockville; two stepsons, Howard F. Saunders of Gaithersburg and Larry Golliday of Rockville; two sisters, Cora Hill of LaGrange and Ada Walker of Raleigh, N.C. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the chapel of Garner Funeral Home in Kinston, N.C., with Rev. Randy Spaugh and Worth Heath officiating. Entombment followed at Pinelawn Memorial Park with military honors.
