Butler Jr Orchard owner George H. Butler Jr., 71, died June 25 at his home in Germantown. He was the husband of Shirley Butler. Born in Silver Spring, he was the son of the late George Henry Butler Sr. and Carrie Blue Butler. Mr. Butler graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1946 and the University of Maryland in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. Mr. Butler and his wife operated Butlerís Orchard in Germantown. He was a past president of Maryland Horticulture Society and North American Strawberry Growers Association. His lifetime work was providing farm fresh, quality produce and recreation for families of the greater Washington area. He was a pioneer in the pick-your-own concept. A member of the Salem United Methodist Church at Cedar Grove, he held many offices and served on many boards of the church. He was also a member of the Salem Cemetery Association. Besides his wife, he is survived by children, Todd Butler and his wife, Susie, Wade Butler and his wife, Angela, all of Germantown, Susan Butler of Germantown and Carol Butler and her husband, Neal Olson, of Dublin, Ireland; four grandchildren; and brother, Sid Butler of Nazareth, Pa. Buxton Montgomery Village Foundation board member William A. Buxton, 60, of Montgomery Village, died on Sunday, June 25, at his home. He was the husband of Jo Alice Buxton. Born in Chicago, he was the son of the late Robert A. and Margarethe A. Olson Buxton. Mr. Buxton was a 1961 graduate of Princeton University where he received his BA degree in English. Mr. Buxton attended Northwestern University where he did graduate studies. He had served in the Illinois Air National Guard and was a member of the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum. After moving to the Washington area in 1979, he served on the board of the Montgomery Village Foundation and was active in the Stedwick Homeowners' Association, of which he was president for several years. Mr. Buxton owned the consulting firm MDS of Gaithersburg. Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Jennifer Buxton Haupt, and her husband Peter of Gaithersburg; and one granddaughter, Julia Royall Haupt. Friends called on Thursday, June 29, at the Olin L. Molesworth P.A. Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. Interment was in Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville. Florence Jean Cairns Secretary Florence Jean Cairns, 70, of Damascus, died Tuesday, June 27, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Lutz and Bertha M. Plummer Lutz, and adopted daughter of the late John and Martha McComas Cairns. Ms. Cairns was employed as a secretary with Bechtel Power Corporation in Gaithersburg, retiring in February of this year. Surviving her are one daughter, Miriam R. Leech and her husband Thomas, of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Miriam Davis of Parsonsburg and Ruth Williams of Mt. Airy; one brother, Robert Dix of Woodbridge, Va.; two grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ms. Cairns was preceded in death by two brothers, Hubert Lutz and Ralph Snoots. Funeral services were held July 1, at the Olin L. Molesworth P.A. Funeral Home in Damascus. Interment was in Deer Park Cemetery, Reisterstown. Ruth Rosett Cunin Substitute teacher Ruth Rosett Cunin, 92, who taught in public schools in Washington, D.C. and Montgomery County for more than 60 years, died at her home in Kensington June 16. Born in Philadelphia, Cunin came to the District with her family as a child. She studied teaching at Wilson Teacherís College in the District, and in 1935 earned a bachelorís degree in education from George Washington University, where she later earned a masterís degree in education. Cunin taught at Barnard, Rudolph, Keene and Shepherd elementary schools in the District, and retired at the age of 70. For the next 10 years, Cunin served as a regular substitute teacher at Woodacres Elementary School in Bethesda and Rock Creek Forest in Chevy Chase. She retired for a second time at the age of 80. During her retirement, Cunin continued teaching, specializing in teaching English as a Second Language to new immigrants at the Jewish Community Center in Rockville. She also worked as a volunteer at the Montgomery County Thrift Shop in Bethesda. Cuninís husband of 49 years, Hyman Cunin, a noted architect and professor at Howard University, died in 1985. Cunin is survived by her sister, May Aaronson of Bethesda; three daughters, Janet Blumenfeld of Gaithersburg; Irene Glaser of Potomac; and Lenore Shavell of Potomac; five grandchildren and two great-grandsons. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Institute for Cancer Research, 1759 R St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20009. Cecil E. Emerson Retired analyst Cecil E. Emerson, 57, of Damascus, formerly of Rockville, died June 27 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born in Olney, he was a son of Hazel R. Emerson of Gaithersburg and the late Max Kelly Emerson. He was the husband of Connie F. Emerson. Mr. Emerson was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School, class of 1961, in Rockville. He retired from the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., where he had worked as an analyst. He had won numerous awards in his 30 years of service. He was of the Methodist faith. His hobbies were golfing and archery and he was a motorcycle enthusiast. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two children, Deonna E. Bricker of Prospect, Ky., and Dennis J. Emerson of Frederick; four grandchildren; one brother, Frank G. Emerson of Gaithersburg; and one sister, Faye E. Rowe of Damascus. Muriel H. Marcia Lynn Erickson County resident Marcia Lynn Erickson, 56, formerly of Gaithersburg, died Wednesday, June 7 at home in Arlington, Texas. Born in Washington, Erickson lived in Chevy Chase and attended Chevy Chase Elementary, Leland Junior High, and graduated from Bethesda- Chevy Chase High School. She attended the University of Maryland majoring in accounting. She was a member of Chevy Chase Methodist Church and very active in the youth fellowship from elementary through high school. She is survived by her husband, Richard F. Erickson of Arlington; son, Wayne A. Erickson of Arlington; daughter, Wendi J. Eddleman and her husband, Tommy Eddleman, of Arlington; parents, John L and Dorothea E. Meininger of Naples, Fla.; brother, Ronald E. Meininger of Gaithersburg. A funeral was held June 12 at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Contributions can be made in her name to the American Cancer Society. Dorothy J. Evans County resident Dorothy J. Evans, 82, of Hagerstown, formerly of Mount Savage and Gaithersburg, died Friday, June 30, at the Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown. Born in Mount Savage, she was the daughter of the late Bluford and Edna (Frankenberry) Gentry. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dexter A. Evans. She was a Methodist by faith. Surviving are three daughters, Sonia J. Blair, Greencastle, Pa., Linda E. Seeley, Gaithersburg, and Dotti S. Fulks, Hyattsville; one son, Dennis G. Evans, Hagerstown; two brothers, David Gentry, Ridgeley, W.Va. and George Witt, Texas; two sisters, Helen Paul and Leota Jenkins, both of Grantsville; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Chuck Ryan officiating. Interment was in the Mount Savage Methodist Cemetery. Virginia L. Foster Secretary Mrs. Virginia L. Foster, age 90, of Adamstown, Md., formerly of Washington Grove, died on Saturday, July 1, at the Victory House Group Home in Clarksburg. She was born in Germantown. She was the wife of the late Francis Foster. Mrs. Foster attended Poolesville High School and graduated from Strayer Business School in Washington, D.C. She had worked for 41 years for the Montgomery Mutual Insurance Co. in Sandy Spring as a secretary. After retiring, she went to work for Bruce Variety Store in Gaithersburg until they closed and then worked at the Ben Franklin Store in Gaithersburg. She was a member of the Neelsville Presbyterian Church in Germantown and was an active member there. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and loved to dance. She loved life and was active in her community. Mrs. Foster kept a daily diary from 1928 until she became ill in 1997. She is survived by two children, Mary Jo Morris and husband Robert of Orinda, Calif., and Thomas G. Darby Jr. and wife Ruth of Adamstown. She is also survived by five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Friends may visit at the Muriel H. Russell Eugene Hann Program manager Mr. Russell Eugene Hann, age 51, of Laytonsville, died on Saturday, July 1, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born in Amaranth, Pa., he was the son of Junia Garland Hann of Pennsylvania and the late Davic R. Hann. He was the husband of Peris Rowell-Hann. Mr. Hann graduated from Southern Fulton High School in Warfordsburg, Pa. and Strayer College in Washington, D.C. He was a program manager for the Montgomery County Government, where he had worked for 31 years. He was a member of the Amaranth Church of the Brethren in Warfordsburg, Pa. and a member of the Whitetail Deer Association in Maryland. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and softball. He was also a Redskin fan. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two children, Caleb E. Hann and David P. Hann, both of Laytonsville; two stepchildren, Terry Rowell and Laja Rowell, both of Rockville; three step-grandchildren, Cory Rowell, Tyler Rowell and Madison Rowell, all of Rockville; a sister, Janice I. Morse of Warfordsburg, Pa.; two brothers, Hervey Hann and Leon Hann, both of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by a nephew and a great nephew. Friends visited at the Muriel H. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to The American Cancer Society. Edward Ralph Harless Maintenance supervisor Edward Ralph Harless, 61, of Olney died June 26 at his home. Born in Rita, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lorenzo Dow Harless and Lucille Griffith Harless. Mr. Harless worked as a maintenance supervisor for 30 years with the Maryland- National Capitol Park and Planning Commission. He also served in the U.S. Army in Korea and Germany. He was a member of American Legion Post 0191 in Mt. Airy and Wheaton Moose Lodge 1775. He enjoyed golfing and especially enjoyed playing at the Needwood Golf Club. He also liked to hunt and fish. Mr. Harless is survived by a son, Edward Brown of Missouri; and three sisters, Janice Olinger of Spokane, Wash., Edna Campbell of Roanoke, Va., and Billie Vermillion of Lewiston, Idaho. John Lawrence Lyons Computer technician John Lawrence Lyons, 35, died after a lengthy battle with brain cancer on June 30 at his home in Gaithersburg. Mr. Lyons was born in Bethesda. He grew up and was educated in the Silver Spring area. He graduated from Sherwood High School in 1983 and attended the University of Maryland. He had a lifelong interest in computers that was reflected in his work for several years at V.F. Associates, an early computer maker and retailer, building personal computers in the mid-1980s. He created and acted as ìsys op,î or manager, of a computer bulletin board known as ìDeath Metal Productions,î enjoyed by many pioneer personal computer users. After attending the University of Maryland for several years, variously majoring in biology, psychology and photography, Mr. Lyons went to work for Crown Books in 1990, where he managed several stores, including the Kentlands Super Crown. In 1994, he married Jennifer Emily Martz and started a family in Rockville. Their family grew with the addition of three children, Kevin, Melanie and Jeremy. During that time, Mr. Lyons returned to his chosen field of computers, working for the National Science Teachers Association. In 1996 he joined MCI, where he worked as a computer technician and later as a Web designer, until he was disabled with a glioma brain tumor in early 1999. Mr. Lyons wrote frankly of his journey through the illness and, with the assistance of his wife, posted the journal regularly to a Web page he created called johnsfunnyfamily.com. The Web page, which remains on line, was named for the group of family friends who volunteered their time to provide food and services to him and his family. Mr. Lyons was a devoted family man whose passions and interests also included cooking, travel, reading, computer and fantasy games, and photography. He traveled extensively in the United States and Europe with his family and friends. He attended River Road Unitarian Church in Bethesda. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his parents, John and Laurena Lyons of Olney; his sisters, Vicki Lyons of Bethesda and Stephanie Lyons Lessick of Philadelphia; his parents-in-law, George and Susie Spangler of Gaithersburg; his grandparents-in-law, Walter and Barbara Scheiber of Bethesda; and other family and friends. Interment was held July 3 at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick. His memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held at 3 p.m. July 8 at River Road Unitarian Church. Arria Griffith McGinniss Guidance counselor Dr. Arria Griffith McGinniss, 86, of Kensington died of complications from pneumonia June 25. Dr. McGinniss was born in Covington, Ky., the oldest of three siblings. She moved to Kensington with her parents, Harry W. McGinniss and Artee Griffith McGinniss, in 1924, and attended Central High School in Washington, D.C. She graduated in 1931, and went on to Wellesley College in Massachusetts. She graduated in 1935, and began teaching at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. In 1942 she joined the Waves and served in the navy for 44 months, attaining the rank of lieutenant. At the end of the war she attended Northwestern University and earned her Ph.D. in counseling. She served in the counseling department at the University of Alabama until 1951 when she became dean of women at Lock Haven State College in Pennsylvania. Her first love, however, was high school students, and in 1955 she returned to being a guidance counselor in Hereford County high schools. After several years she returned to Kensington and served as a guidance counselor at Wheaton and Spring Brook high schools. She retired in 1983 at the age of 70. Since retirement she devoted her life to serving her church and community. She delivered food to AIDS victims through Food and Friends, prepared food for Meals on Wheels and volunteered with hospice. She was both a deacon and an elder at Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church. Dr. McGinniss is survived by her sister, Belle Wylde of Bradenton, Fla.; a nephew, Tom Wylde and his wife Donna, of Annapolis; and two nieces, Susan Youngman of Cape Coral, Fla., and Anne George, Nokomis, Fla. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. July 9 at Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church, 10123 Connecticut Ave., Kensington. Memorial gifts may be made in her memory to the church. Katherine W. McIntosh County resident Katherine W. McIntosh, 66, of Rockville died June 12 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Catherine Matthew. She was the wife of Charles N. McIntosh Sr. of Rockville and was a homemaker. She is survived by five children, Charles Norman McIntosh Jr. of Potomac, Claude Herman McIntosh of Woodsboro, and Matthew Ward McIntosh, David Andrew McIntosh and Edward Scott McIntosh, all of Rockville. Dorothy Lorraine Mills County resident Dorothy Lorraine Mills, 75, of Rockville died June 14 at Randolph Hills Nursing Center. Born in Gaithersburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Mayhew Melvin. She was the wife of the late Beverly Barnes Mills. Mrs. Mills is survived by one daughter, Dinah J. Jones of Germantown; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred Burroughs of W.Va., Ruth Ryan of Frederick and Mary Luhn of Potomac; and three brothers, Edward Thompson of Clarksburg, Cleveland Melvin of Baltimore and Jack Melvin of Florida. Mrs. Mills attended Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting. She attended Christian Life Center in Rockville and the Rockville Senior Center. Anthony Mocarsky World War II veteran Anthony "Tony" Mocarsky, 82, died June 18 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, Charlotte Hall. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in Panama. He retired from Bethesda Naval Hospital after 40 years. He was the husband of Catherine Gartner Mocarsky of Damascus. They had been married 38 years. Born in Ranshaw, Pa., he was the son of the late Adam and Josephine Mocarsky. Surviving in addition to his wife are six children: Pamela Plitt of Clarksburg, Sharon Stewart of Solomons, Patricia Lack of Frederick, Linda Chapin of Elgood, W.Va., Catherine Paris of Montgomery, N.Y., and Tracy Mocarsky of Nathalie, Va. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Mocarsky was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Perry, 78, of Big Timber, Mont., died May 30 at Livingston Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Lillian Perry. Born in Frederick, he was the son of the late Harry Clay and Nannia Bentz Perry. Mr. Perry was a lifelong member of Damascus Volunteer Fire Department. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He was a member of American Legion Post 19 in Big Timber, and a former member of the Damascus American Legion post. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter, Diane Colpo and husband, James, of Big Timber; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Harriet Gartner of Gaithersburg, Virginia Federline of Sun City Center, Fla., Ruth Bowman of Gaithersburg, Sue Wynne, Frances Kennedy and Dorothy Beebe, all of Frederick, Roxanne Stewart of Santa Fe, N.M., and Janet Bognaski of Columbia; and brothers, Harry C. Priebe, 82, of Silver Spring, formerly of Unity near Laytonsville, died June 24 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. He had worked as a laborer most of his life. Born in Unity, he was the son of the late Herman and Rubie Brown Priebe. Survivors include sister, Elsie P. Lyddane, and her husband, Bill, of Orange City, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by six brothers and sisters. Graveside and interment services were held June 29 at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Sunshine. The Rev. Janice Meyer, pastor of Mt. Barber Funeral Home in Laytonsville. Fred S. Rachel Jr. County resident Fred S. Rachel Jr., 50, of Gaithersburg, died on Friday, June 30 at the Washington Adventist Hospital. Hwas the son of the late Fred S. Rachel Sr. and Norma J. Riley Rachel. Surviving are brother Ben Rachel of Frederick, sister Tammy Haught of Mt. Airy and brother Kerry Rachel of Laurelton, Pa. Hester Becker Robbins Activist Hester Becker Robbins, 85, died at her Silver Spring home June 28. She had polycythemia, a rare blood disorder. Mrs. Robbins was born in Schoharie County, New York, and was a graduate of Gloversville High School and the Gloversville Business School where she took secretarial courses. Following school, she became a secretary for the Gloversville Chamber of Commerce. In 1937 she married Paul Robbins and moved to New York City where her husband was a professor at Cooper Union, and Mrs. Robbins was active in the wives' club. She stopped work in 1943 to raise a family. She was a member of Christ Congregational United Church of Christ in Silver Spring where she served on several committees and boards and taught Sunday school. She was also active in the women's auxiliary of the National Society of Professional Engineers where her husband was the executive director. She was also a member of the Columbia Country Club. She was a member of the Silver Spring Women's Club, the Forest Grove Parent- Teachers Association and was a Girl Scout leader. Other activities and hobbies included bowling, needlework, golf, traveling and cooking. In the 1970s, Montgomery County government cited her for her work in creating audiotapes for the blind. Survivors in addition to her husband of 63 years, include a daughter, Susan Gallinger of Danville, Calif.; son, David Robbins of Puyallup, Wash.; and two granddaughters. Royal, Sr. Field service manager Robert L. Royal, Sr., 75, of Germantown, died Thursday, June 22 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. He was born in Washington, D.C. ,Mr. Royal was a field service manager for a business machine company. He was the beloved husband of Mary A. Royal; loving father of Darla Tompkins of West Virginia, Cynthia Brilli of Cincinnati, OH, Robert L. Royal, Jr. of Rochester, NY and Bethany A. Shelton of Dallax, TX; brother of Doyle P. Royal of Bethesda and Norma Cannon of Tucson, AZ. Ten grandchildren also survive him. A Memorial Mass was offered at Mother Seton Catholic Church, Germantown. He was the husband of Paula Long-Simmons. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Richard Allen Simmons and June Wenrick Simmons. Mr. Simmons was a transportation supervisor for Montgomery County Public Schools, where he had worked since 1970. He was a life member and retired captain of the Glen Echo Volunteer Fire Department and an active member of the New Market Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Heather Marie Simmons, Elizabeth Andrea Simmons and Dustin Wenrick Simmons, all of Monrovia; four brothers, Michael A. Simmons and his wife Sande of Grantsville, Donald M. Simmons and his wife Carolyn of Hilton Head, S.C., Gary D. Simmons and his wife Brenda of Ocala, Fla., and Lawrence R. Simmons and his wife Sue of Monrovia; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives. Mr. Simmons is also remembered by a special friend, Gladys Martin-Budd of Rockville. Mr. Baugher graduated from Catonsville High School and the University of Maryland School of Engineering in 1958. He belonged to the ROTC while in college. He was president and owner of I.B. Baugher Co. Inc., a temperature control business in Highland, formerly located in Burtonsville. He attended First United Methodist Church of Laurel. Mr. Baugher was a golfer and loved basketball and baseball. His company sponsored the Baugher Co. Cardinals in Silver Spring, a Montgomery County sports team. Doris Freer Nuclear intelligence analyst Doris Moon Freer, 82, of Chevy Chase, a preservation pioneer and former nuclear intelligence analyst, died of a heart attack July 2 at the Washington Hospital Center. Mrs. Freer was the first Maryland president of The Questers, an international organization devoted to the study and preservation of antiques and historic buildings. Local recipients of Quester grants or antique furnishings have included the U.S. Department of State, C&O Canal, Bethesda Meeting House, and Stronghold, the historic mansion at Sugarloaf Mountain. As the Quester's national first vice president, Mrs. Freer organized 58 additional chapters across the country. She began a 30-year government career with the War Department and was one of the first people to work at the Pentagon. She later became an intelligence analyst at the Atomic Energy Commission, now the Department of Energy, where she developed a life-long interest in the prospects and challenges of nuclear energy use. Hoettges-Allen was born and raised in Wuppertal-Elberfeld, Germany, where she completed 12 years of schooling plus three years apprenticeship in sales. She worked for the U.S. Air Force Post Exchange in Wiesbaden, Germany, for several years after World War II. She immigrated to the United States in 1951. After immigration, she lived in Cumberland and the relocated to Washington, D.C. She moved to Silver Spring in 1962. She worked as a clerk/cashier for Acme Markets at Veirs Mill and Randolph roads for 30 years before retiring in 1982. Hoettges-Allen was active in volunteer work. She was a life member of Montgomery Cedarettes of Montgomery Forest, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Women of the Moose of Wheaton Lodge and the ladies auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Silver Spring. He was a member of the American Legion Post 191 and of the Wheaton Moose Lodge. He was the husband of Bertha E. Mayne. They were married for 52 years. Mr. Simmons was a transportation supervisor for Montgomery County Public Schools, where he had worked since 1970. Interment is at Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville. Robert E. Simpson Economist Robert E. Simpson, 83, of Potomac died from pancreatic cancer July 8 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. Mr. Simpson, a retired foreign service officer and economist, worked for the U.S. government for more than 30 years and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in Australia and New Guinea. Born in Chicago and raised in Ridgewood, N.J., Mr. Simpson lived in the Washington, D.C., area for more than 50 years and was active in many civic groups, including the Montgomery County Civic Federation as vice president and Common Cause Maryland as a governing board member. In 1938 Mr. Simpson graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College in Amherst, Mass. Twenty-four years later he graduated from the National War College in Washington. In 1964 he received a master's degree in international affairs from the George Washington University. Mr. Simpson started his career as an intern at the National Institute of Public Affairs in 1938 and played eight roles for the U.S. Government, including counselor of economic and commercial affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, Australia, from 1973 to 1978. He retired in 1979 as a director of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Office of Country Affairs. Mr. Simpson is survived by his wife, Anna Nelson Simpson of Potomac; his daughters, Karen Anne Simpson of Paris and Heather Margot Simpson of Marietta, Ga.; and his son, John Frederick Simpson of Vienna. Joan M. Whalen Bank vice president Joan M. Whalen, 77, a Suburban Trust Company vice president who was the first woman to manage a bank branch for Suburban, died of congestive heart failure June 30 at Potomac Valley Nursing and Wellness Center in Rockville. Miss Whalen, daughter of William M. Whalen and Alice McCarthy Whalen (deceased), was a 1940 graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, one of five female graduates of the Virginia-Maryland School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia in 1966, and a graduate of the American Institute of Banking. Born in Scranton, Pa., she was a longtime resident of Bethesda and Chevy Chase. During World War II, she served as a civilian payroll clerk for the navy in Redbank, N.J. After the war she moved to Bethesda, where she began her 30-plus year career with Suburban Trust Company in 1951, working for 20 years in its Bethesda office. In 1969, she was appointed assistant vice president and a year later was elected manager of the new Chevy Chase branch, where she stayed until her retirement in 1983. Named a vice president in 1975, she helped maintain the Chevy Chase branch's reputation for customer service by arranging commercial and consumer loans and advising customers on various checking, savings and investment accounts. Survivors include four brothers, Robert and Ted Whalen of Rockville, Mike Whalen of Chevy Chase, Neil Whalen of Tilghman Island; a sister, Janet Quantrille of Kill Devil Hills, N.C; and several nieces and nephews. Bowman and the late John Sterling Bowman, died July 23 of a heart attack at his home in Sarasota, Fla. He was born in Darnestown and grew up in Montgomery County. Following graduation from Gaithersburg High School, he attended Pennsylvania State University where he received a bachelor of arts degree and a master's degree in education. He met his wife Marjorie Moorhead at Penn State and in 1960 they were married. They moved to Oklahoma where Jack served three years in the Air Force. After his military service, they moved back to Pennsylvania where Jack taught school in the Philadelphia area. Jack was offered a position with Sears and they moved to Glen Ellyn, Ill. where he continued his education and received a degree in business management from the College of DuPage. Mr. Bowman was a manager/administrator for Sears in Syracuse and Chicago. He retired in 1993 and moved to Sarasota, Fla., where he continued in management for several businesses in the Sarasota area. Mr. Bowman was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Tom. He is survived by his wife Marjorie and three daughters, Brooke, Bridget and Bambit. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Robin Bowman and Carolyn Bowman, as well as nine nieces and nephews and two great nieces. All services are private. Antoinette DiGiacomo County resident Antoinette DiGiacomo, 84, of Germantown, formerly of Norristown, Pa., died July 20, at Montgomery Village Care and Rehabilitation. He was a lifelong resident of Montgomery County and a 1967 graduate of Gaithersburg High School. Rodney had completed coursework at Montgomery Community College and at the University of Maryland, College Park. The son of Meloise Driver and the late Walter C. Driver, and son-in-law of Matilda K. Gray, he is survived by his wife, Georgia R. Driver; daughter Stacey l. Gills and her husband, Michael; son, Aaron T. Driver and his wife, Ilaria; and two grandsons. He is also survived by his twin brother, Roland, and seven other brothers, Donald, John, Ralph, Frank, Gilbert, Robert and Alan. He is also survived by four sisters, Rebecca Garrison, Melissa Washington, Sally Tynes-Mboye and Sheila Moore; 10 sisters-in-law and six brothers-in-law; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Until his health failed, Mr. Driver was one of two capital project managers for the Facilities and Services Division of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation. He had been a Montgomery County government employee for 28 years. Mr. Driver and his brothers founded the Gaithersburg Corvette Club, or G-Burg Vettes, in 1977. Mr. Driver and the club supported many charities on local and national levels. He drove his Corvettes in several of Gaithersburg's Labor Day Parades along with other club members. A talented and self-taught guitarist, Mr. Driver and his twin brother, Roland, joined with high school friends to form a band named Cream and Cocoa that performed from 1965 through 1970. He was also a church musician, providing guitar accompaniment for the Sunday morning services, as well as performing with the church gospel groups The Seneca Players, The Seneca Choral Ensemble and The Seneca Mass Choir. He also accompanied his son, Aaron, a talented soloist, in various performances throughout the area. Services were held July 12 at Seneca Community Church in Germantown. He worked his way through the ranks to become a homicide detective, then head of the Major Crimes Unit, and rose to captain of the Germantown station. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Alicia Hendren Better. Memorial services were held Saturday at the Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville. Janis Wiggin Librarian Janis Wiggin, 80, of Montgomery Village, died July 20 of cancer. She was the wife of Ed Wiggin. Mrs. Wiggin is survived by two daughters, Emily Benner of Carmel, Ind. and Martha Rheaume of Londonderry, N.H. She is also survived by three sisters, one brother, two grandsons and one granddaughter. Born and raised in southwest Virginia, Mrs. Wiggin was a graduate of Berea College. Before moving to Montgomery Village in 1975, she worked as a librarian in Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Irvington-on-Hudson, N.Y. She was an active member of the 9-hole ladies' group of The Montgomery Village Golf Club where she served for a number of years as the group's official photographer.
