She was the wife of the late Leroy F. Bennett. In addition to her children, she also raised 25 foster children. Born in Damascus, she was the daughter of the late Frank W. and Helen M. Hilton Shipley. Surviving are children Douglas L. Bennett and his wife Brenda of Ijamsville, Sandra Bennett Walters of Frederick and Mark W. Bennett of Germantown; grandchildren Michele and Meredith Walters, and Sherry, Kevin, Ashley, Douglas and Christopher Bennett; and sisters Doris Medairy and Willie Sier, both of Damascus. Edna Eddins Collie County resident Edna Eddins Collie, 93, died Oct. 16 at Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg. She had resided with her son, Wesley Collie, and his wife in Brookeville for nearly 10 years before moving to Gaithersburg. She had been a longtime resident of the Pleasant Grove community in Nash County, N.C. Mrs. Collie was preceded in death by her husband, Van Buren Collie. Mrs. Collie is survived by six children, Doris Osborn of Fridley, Minn., Van Collie of Indialantic, Fla., Myrtle Harper of Virginia Beach, Va., Ben Collie of Tower, Minn., Wesley Collie of Brookeville and Mary Jane Fielek of McKenney, Texas; one sister, Pat Jones of Nashville, S.C.; one brother, Jack Eddins of Kathleen, Fla.; and 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great- great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the historic Oakdale Chapel of Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church, 3415 Emory Church Road in Olney. Luther H. Griffin Jr. County resident Luther H. Griffin Jr., 66, of Hedgesville, W.Va., formerly of Dickerson and Laytonsville, died Oct. 29 at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va. Born in Deerfield, Va., he was the son of the late Luther H. Sr. and Lena Varner Griffin and was the husband of the late Roselee Griffin. He is survived by three children, Mike Griffin of Derwood, Margaret A. Seabolt of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Sandy G. Hatfield of Hedgesville; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Salem Cemetery, Brookeville. Elva M. Hershey National Institutes of Health committee manager Mrs. Elva M. Hershey, 72, of Montgomery Village, died Oct. 27 at Casey House Hospice, Rockville. Born in Kensington, Md., she was the daughter of the late Martin and Ethel Wright. She was the wife of Walter H. Hershey, to whom she had been married for 50 years. Mrs. Hershey retired from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda after 30 years of service as a committee manager. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Ft. Myers and Ormond Beach, Fla. before returning to Maryland. Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Nancy M. Hershey of Gaithersburg. Funeral services and interment will be private. Ernest Eugene Musser Sr. Landscaper Mr. Ernest (Ernie) Eugene Musser Sr., 72, of Smithsburg, Md., died Oct. 11, at his residence, of melanoma. He was the loving husband of Cora E. Musser, whom he married Sept. 9, 1950, at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Gaithersburg. Born in Germantown, he was the son of the late Henry Marcelus Musser Sr. and Mary E. (Gartner) Musser. He attended St. Martin's Catholic School in Gaithersburg and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was also a retired landscaper and tree surgeon. Mr. Musser was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church of Hagerstown, where he served as a lector. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. In addition to his wife, Ernie is survived by seven children; Catherine Smith of Keedysville, Ernest E. Musser Jr. of Smithsburg, Nancy Skeen of Smithsburg, Paul A. Musser Sr. of Middletown, Edward A. Musser of Hagerstown, Christopher L. Musser of Smithsburg and Ronald H. Musser of Hagerstown. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mr. Musser is also survived by three brothers and five sisters; Elizabeth Jacobs of Arlington, Va., Henry M. Musser Jr. of Gaithersburg, Francis Hister of Rockville, Emma Linthicum of Middleburg, Leah Collins of Boyds, Janet Musser of Arlington, Va., Charles F. Musser Sr. and Lawrence H. Musser Sr., both of Gaithersburg. He was preceded in death by three brothers; infant Alan Musser, Thomas W. Musser Sr. of Leonardtown, Robert H. Musser Sr. of Morningside; and one sister, Margaret Kelly of Birmingham, Mich. Mr. Musser donated his body to the Maryland Anatomy Board for medical research. A Memorial Mass was celebrated in his honor at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick on Saturday, Oct. 28. Milton Joseph Russ Sr. 84, of Hagerstown, died Oct. 26 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, WV. Born on in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of the late Charles A. and Lilly May Woodhouse Russ. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He moved to Hagerstown in 1972. He was a member of Trinity Christian Church, Clear Spring, Md. He was a Layman Minister of the First Assembly of God Church on Cedar Lane in Gaithersburg. He was an ordained minister and Bishop with the Christian Ministerial Association Inc. of Boonsboro, Md. He was a life member of the Hagerstown VFW Post 1936, a life member of the Morris Frock American Legion Post 42-Hagerstown and a life member of DAV Chapter 14 of Hagerstown, Md. He retired after 18 years of service from the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda. He is survived by his wife, the Rev. Mary Kathryn Bridge Russ whom he married on Aug. 9, 1939; one son, Milton Joseph Russ Jr., Fairplay, Md.; seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, John Nelson Russ Sr.; a sister, Cora V. Belvin; three brothers, Wilson W. Russ, Norman A. Russ Sr. and Charles A. Russ. Attn: Gr048. *****Nov. 10, 2000***** Helen Holmsley Blunt Helen Holmsley Blunt, 75, a Bethesda civic activist and former chairwoman of the State Property Tax Assessment Appeals Board for Montgomery County, died of vascular disease Oct. 24 at Suburban Hospital. She was the unofficial "mayor" of her Edgemoor neighborhood in Bethesda, serving many terms as president of the Edgemoor Citizens Association and the Bethesda Coalition. She was executive vice president of the Montgomery County Civic Federation and was proud to be known as "sewer lady" because of her battles with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission over growth issues. Her activism prompted her to run, and win, election to the Maryland Democratic Central Committee from District 16. She was born Oct. 14, 1925, in San Benito, Texas, and lived in many small west Texas towns before moving to Dallas and then Houston. She received a chemistry degree from The Rice Institute (now University), where she met her husband, Robert, a physicist. During World War II, she worked as a chemist at the Humble Oil refinery in Baytown, Texas, taught celestial navigation, and flew submarine search missions with the Civil Air Patrol. After the war, she worked for Midcontinent Airlines and later ran a biochemical lab in Houston before being hired by the American Chemical Society for its Houston bureau. She transferred to Washington in 1951 to edit sections of Chemical & Engineering News. While Mrs. Blunt and her husband raised a son and daughter, she worked with the Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, PTA, and swim teams at the Edgemoor Club. She later worked for the Bureau of National Affairs until her appointment to the county's tax appeals board, which she chaired until 1997. In recent years, she helped administer the Lazarus Fellows Leadership Program at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Robert Blunt, of Bethesda; a daughter, Laura Blunt of Hyattsville; and a son, Robert Blunt of Alexandria, Va. Homer L. Reighard Homer L. "Rick" Reighard of Bethesda, 75, died of congestive heart failure Oct. 2. Dr. Reighard, a former head of the Federal Aviation Administration's medical staff, had a career of more than 50 years in aviation medicine. After his retirement from FAA in 1984, he worked as a consultant and expert witness. Dr. Reighard earned a bachelor's degree from Franklin and Marshall College and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His medical degree was earned at Temple University where he served his internship and later worked as physician-in- charge in the emergency room. Dr. Reighard also held a master's degree in public health from Harvard. Entering the Air Force in 1950, Dr. Reighard served two years as a flight surgeon and received training in aviation medicine and accident investigation. He entered private practice after leaving the Air Force. He joined the Civil Aeronautics Administration, the predecessor to the FAA, in 1953 and worked in various positions, rising to become the director of all FAA's medical activities from 1975 to 1984. During his service with the FAA, Dr. Reighard developed the first major revision of medical standards for pilots since they were adopted in 1926. In 1959 he began the first formal medical investigation of fatal aircraft accidents. He also chaired an international committee that drafted a major revision of international aviation medical standards. Dr. Reighard chaired the U.S. Task Force on Deterrence of Air Piracy that developed the first procedures used in security screening airline passengers. After retirement from the FAA, Dr. Reighard served both government and airlines as a medical review officer in drug testing programs for pilots. He also worked as a consultant and expert witness on aviation medical matters, including pilot age limits. His many awards included FAA's Distinguished Career Service Award and the Harry G. Moseley Award from the Aerospace Medical Association. In addition to his wife, Barbara S. Reighard of Bethesda, Dr. Reighard is survived by two brothers, George Reighard and Floyd Reighard, both of Pennsylvania; three children, Marthe C. Reighard of Connecticut, Janet D. O'Brien of Germantown, and Paul D. Reighard of Bethesda; and five grandchildren. Joseph Arena Sr. Joseph Arena Sr. of Gaithersburg and formerly of New Bedford, Mass., died Oct. 29, 2000. His wife, Millicent E. Arena, and son Joseph Arena Jr. and his wife, Sandy, survive him. He is also survived by two grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Gilholm, Philamena Belli and Theresa Sirois; and one brother, Carmino Arena, all of New Bedford, Mass. Janota, Ph.D. Claus P. Janota, Ph.D., 59, died Nov. 4, 2000, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Born in Munich, Germany, on Sept. 6, 1941, he was the son of Betty Janota, of Wichita Falls, Texas, and the husband of Jeanette Janota of Gaithersburg. Mr. Janota earned a bachelor of science degree in math and physics from Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and a Ph.D. in acoustics from Pennsylvania State University. He earned a Penn State award for inventing a Braille interface for electronic calculators. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three sons, Nick of Lucile, Idaho, Eric of Golden, Colo., and Curt of Silver Spring; and his wife Vicki. Starkweather, 69, of Gaithersburg, died Nov. 5, 2000, at Casey House Hospice in Rockville. Born Feb. 12, 1931, in Baltimore, he was a son of the late Harry Starkweather and Helen Kelly Starkweather. He was the husband of Donna W. Starkweather. Mr. Starkweather graduated from Severn High School in Severn. He served in the U.S. Army in the European theater. He graduated from Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania and also the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. He received his degree in chemistry and worked as a biochemist in biotechnology. He was a member of the New York Academy of Science and the American Association for Advancement of Science. He published many scientific articles and had several patents in technology. Mr. Starkweather was recognized as an authority in his field. Besides his wife, he is survived by three children from his first marriage; Robert Starkweather of Texas, James Starkweather of Massachusetts and Thomas Starkweather of Utah. Jessica Chloe James Jessica Chloe James, 86, died Nov. 3 at Shady Grove Hospital following complications with emphysema. A Potomac resident since 1965, she owned Hi-Horse Farm on River Road, where she often gave bull roasts and horse shows to benefit charities. Born in Chicago, Mrs. James was a child actress who played the leading role in a production featuring her name, "Chloe's Fairy Fanices" in the New York theater district. She started a vaudeville company and later taught child actors as the director of the New Yorker School of Professional Acting. In 1949, Mrs. James met her husband, C.T. "Jimmie" James, who preceded her in death. Together, they founded the National Detective Agency, where she worked as secretary-treasurer until the firm's sale in 1987. An interest in antiques led her to found several businesses including Stuff for Sale in Bethesda and two Col. James' Auction Galleries in Laurel. She founded Chloe's Collectibles, an antique toy and doll business, with her daughter. Other interests included work with the Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary and Friends of the Humane Society. James is survived by a daughter Jaye James Younkers of Potomac; stepson Harold James of Gaithersburg; sister Patricia Ward of Des Moines, Iowa; brother Ben Thatcher of Toms River, N.J.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Daniel Coram Correll III Daniel Coram Correll III, 73, a retired analyst for the Department of Energy, died Nov. 4 from complications of Parkinson's Disease at the National Lutheran Home in Rockville. Mr. Correll, a 30-year resident of Germantown, was a business graduate of the University of Tennessee. He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves and was active in the Episcopal church and Boy Scouts. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Carrie Erline Correll of Rockville; four children, Katie Correll-Freeman of Stevensville, Md., Daniel (Cory) Correll IV of Gaithersburg, Caroline Winn of Germantown and Carl Correll of Chicago, Ill.; and four grandchildren. Services are pending. George P. Johnson II George P. Johnson II of Germantown died Nov. 2. He was the husband of Debra L. Johnson and a son of Ellen Quitne Johnson of York, Pa., and George P. Johnson of Staten Island, N.Y. Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by a sister, Lisa Steiger of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., and a brother, Paul J. Johnson of Waymart, Pa. John Lamb Mr. John Lamb, 68, of Clarksburg, died Oct. 31 at his home. He was the husband of Bernice J. Lamb. Born Dec. 5, 1931, in Liverpool, England, he was a son of the late Frederick and Marie Brunt Lamb. Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, John Daniel Lamb of Germantown, Matthew David Lamb of Germantown and Drew Michael Lamb and his wife, Elizabeth, of Charlotte, N.C. Born Nov. 10, 1924, in Seymour, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Andrew Narkevich and Eva Thomas Narkevich. She graduated from Crothersville High School in Indiana in 1942 and served in the United States Coast Guard from 1943 to 1945. Mrs. Kindred was married to Robert L. Kindred in November 1952 and became an Air Force wife. Mr. Kindred died in 1987. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia A. Williams of Gaithersburg; a son, James A. Kindred of Beaufort, S.C.; and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held Oct. 20 at the post chapel in Fort Myers in Arlington, Va., with military honors. Burkholder Health food store owner Iva Marie Goard Burkholder, 94, of Damascus died Nov. 13 at the Citizens Nursing Home, Frederick. She was the wife of the late Clifford A. Burkholder. Mrs. Burkholder owned the Good Diet Shop at 1226 H St., NW, near the White House. The health food store was a landmark from the '40s through the '60s, frequented by many notables and dignitaries. Upon retirement, she moved to Damascus. Born in Hibbing, Minn., she was the daughter of the late Lydia Melissa Brist Goard and John Goard. Surviving are a daughter, Joan Burkholder and her husband Charles Crist. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one sister, Margaret Davies. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Olin L. Burns, 101, of Etchison, died Nov. 11 at Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg, where she had been a resident for four years. Born in Etchison, Md., she was the daughter of the late Walter Parsley and Sadie Woodfield Parsley. She was the wife of the late Wilbur R. Burns, who preceded her in death in 1973. Mrs. Burns and her husband owned and operated a farm in Etchison for many years. She was also a foster parent, having raised over 26 foster children. She was a member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church in Etchison and was a Sunday school teacher there. She was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service and worked at the church fair booth at the Montgomery County Fair. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing. Mrs. Burns is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Burns Weidner, and a son-in-law, V. R. Weidner, of Etchison. She is also survived by several foster children. Funeral services were held at Mt. Robert John Ehrlinger Teacher Robert John "Biggie" "Bob" Ehrlinger, 77, formerly of Potomac, died Nov. 7 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Mr. Ehrlinger, who most recently lived at Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick, was born in Wilkinsburg, Pa. He was the son of the late Carl Henry and Marie Dorothy Wessler Ehrlinger. He served during World War II for the Merchant Marines. Mr. Ehrlinger began his education at Purdue University and earned a master's from the University of Pittsburgh. He earned his doctorate in engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He worked for Westinghouse and Johns Hopkins in the field of research, as a teacher at Johns Hopkins, and for the Social Security Administration. For many years with his wife, he worked with children who came from broken homes. He was also an accomplished musician who played trumpet and harmonica. He attended Grace Episcopal Church in New Market. Besides his wife, Mr. Ehrlinger is survived by his children Dannah Ehrlinger Fleming and husband Paul R. of Frederick, and David Justin Ehrlinger and wife Rebecca, also of Frederick; grandchildren Kyle John and Sean David Ehrlinger; a sister Mary Christine Demmler of Pittsburgh. A funeral was held Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church in New Market. Interment was at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick. Margaret Strencosky Grabowski Anesthetist Mrs. Margaret Grabowski, 74, of Darnestown, died Nov. 13, at her home. She was the wife of Walter P. Grabowski, to whom she was married on Oct. 3,1985, at Saints Peter and Paul Church, Saint Clair, Pa. Born in Saint Clair, Mrs. Grabowski was the youngest daughter of the late Eleanor and Adolph Strencosky. She attended the Saint Clair elementary schools and Saint Clair High School. She was a member of the choir and sometime organist at Saints Peter and Paul Church. Mrs. Grabowski was most recently a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Rockville. Following her graduation from high school, Mrs. Grabowski received her nurse's cap from Pottsville Hospital, where she participated in the Naval Cadet Nursing Program. She later earned her certification as a nurse anesthetist from Temple University in Philadelphia. She also attended Hunter College in Manhattan, New York. Mrs. Grabowski's professional career included five years as a nurse anesthetist at the Geisinger Clinic in Danville, Pa., after which she joined the staff of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Manhattan. Following her marriage, she transferred to the VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where she was a staff anesthetist for 26 years. During a period of residence in West Germany, she served on the staff of the U.S. Army Hospital in Furth, near Nuremburg. She was an active member of Saint Sebastian's Church in Frankfurt where she was elected to the parish council and held offices in the Military Council of Catholic Women. A member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, she was active and held offices in the District of Columbia and Maryland Associations of Nurse Anesthetists. Mrs. Grabowski was also a practicing hypnotherapist and member of the American Association of Ethical Hypnotists. Mrs. Grabowski is survived by her husband, Walter P. Grabowski; a son, Geoffrey W. Grabowski; three sisters, Joan Strencosky of Saint Clair, Pa., Katherine Walko of Hazleton, Pa., and Antoinette Goetz of Schuylkill Haven, Pa. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Rev. John J. Emerick of the Society of Mary and Joseph Emerick of Nazareth, Pa.; three sisters, Sister Estelle Emerick of the Bernardino Franciscan Order, Ann Katechis of Saint Clair, Pa., and Mary Wiley of Philadelphia, Pa. Agnes McNutt Kricker Elementary school teacher Agnes McNutt "Chicken" Kricker, 91, of Bethany Beach, Del., formerly of Montgomery County, died of heart failure at her home Nov. 3. She was a retired elementary school teacher in Montgomery County and Ocean View, Del. She was born in Crawfordsville, Ind., and attended Indiana University and the University of Maryland, where she earned two master's degrees in home economics and education and was a charter member of the Gamma Psi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was a member of the Women's Board of Olney General Hospital and an auxiliary member of Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Del. She is survived by a son, Frank McNutt Kricker; two daughters, Louise Kricker Megginson and Caroline Kricker Hussmann; and 11 grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. Services were private.
