Born May 6, 1970, in Cumberland, he was the son of Charles A. and Marjorie Ann Morton Bittner of Falling Waters. Mr. Bittner was a former football player at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown during 1985-86. In addition to his parents, he is survived by brothers Charles A. Bittner and Gregory R. Bittner, both of Germantown, Ronald D. Bittner of Williamsport and Robert P. Bittner of Frederick; sisters Cheryl A. Bittner of Germantown, Deborah L. Mayer of Damascus and Susan A. Manning of Adamstown; and 18 nieces and nephews. Mr. Bittner was preceded in death by his grandparents. A service was held Dec. 27 at Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick. The Rev. Lucille Woodland Faulconer, church organist Lucille Woodland Faulconer, 79, died of cancer Dec. 25 at Casey House hospice in Derwood. Mrs. Faulconer served as church organist for St. Bernadette's Church in the Four Corners area of Silver Spring for 26 years, and in retirement served as substitute organist for Grace Episcopal Church in Port Orange, Fla. She was a 1941 honors graduate of Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where she studied piano. She was employed as a payroll clerk at the Rixon Corp. in White Oak from the mid-1970s until retirement in 1984. Born in Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Faulconer was married in Washington, D.C., in 1943 to the Richard M. Faulconer, who died July 14, 2000. The couple were longtime residents of Silver Spring. They moved to Frederick in 1989 and back to Rockville in 1999. Mrs. Faulconer gave private piano lessons at her home in Silver Spring for a number of years and was skilled at needlepoint. She made clothes and afghans for children in cancer hospitals in Florida. Other interests included membership in book clubs and playing bridge. She had been a member of the Music Commission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., and the Embroidery Guild of America. She is survived by a son, Thomas, of Central Square, N.Y.; two daughters, Ann Witty of Woodbridge, Va., and Carol Faulconer of Montgomery Village; and three grandchildren and one great-grandson. A memorial service will be held in late January at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Woodbridge. Arrangements were handled by Miller Funeral Home and Crematory in Woodbridge. George J. Flanagan, postal worker George J. Flanagan, 82, of Silver Spring, died Dec. 11 at his home. Born Jan. 7, 1918, in Washington, D.C., he was the husband of the late Ann Marie Flanagan. Mr. Flanagan served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He had worked for 15 years at a patent law firm as a researcher. He later worked as a manager in operations for the U.S. Postal Service where he retired after 32 years. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Silver Spring. Mr. Flanagan was a Washington Redskins fan. He liked to shoot pool and was a member of the Billiards Club at Leisure World as well as the Republican Club and garden club there. Survivors include son, Patrick R. Flanagan, and his wife, Meg, of Laytonsville; granddaughters, Jennifer and Molly Flanagan, both of Laytonsville; and three sisters. Sylvia Ann Horn, Housekeeper Sylvia Ann Horn, 66, of Wheaton died Dec. 26, 2000, at her home. She was employed by the housekeeping staff of Circle Manor Nursing Home in Kensington. Born Oct. 10, 1934, in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of Andrew J. Horn of Walkersville and the late Golda Rhoads Horn. Surviving beside her father are brothers Douglas M. Horn and his wife Sandra J. of Mount Airy; Eugene L. Horn and his wife Jane Cass-Horn of Annapolis; and Andrew J. James Patterson Kerr Jr., community physician Dr. James Patterson Kerr Jr., 87, of Damascus died Dec. 28, 2000, at Montgomery General Hospital, Olney. He served as a community physician in Damascus for 54 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Pentalpha Lodge 194 in Gaithersburg and a lifetime member of the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department. He graduated from the University of Maryland's medical school. He is survived by his wife, Marion M. Kerr; children Mary Lou Searing and her husband Daniel of Upper Marlboro and James P. Kerr III and his wife Kathy of Frederick; grandchildren Danile A. In 1968, she was a National Merit Scholarship finalist at Niskayuna High School, Schenectady, N.Y. Thomas E. Plummer Jr., World War II veteran Thomas E. "Tim" Plummer Jr., 80, died Dec. 15 at his home in Rockville. He was the husband of the late Gertrude H. Plummer. Born July 12, 1920, in Laytonsville, he was the son of the late Thomas E. and Winifred Watkins Plummer. Mr. Plummer was a retired owner-operator of the District Camera Shop and was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by one brother, William A. Plummer of South Port, Conn. Williams, maintenance worker Homer Edward Williams, 67, of Silver Spring, died Dec. 16 at his home. Born July 14, 1933, in Mississippi, he was the son of the late Homer and Myrtle Edwards Williams. Mr. Williams worked in maintenance for a center for the handicapped in Silver Spring. He liked to watch television, especially sports. He is survived by brothers, John B. Williams and his wife, Shirley, of Damascus, and Billy Williams of Silver Spring; and nieces and nephews. Services and interment were private. *****Jan. 12, 2001***** Ernest Richard Koth Ernest Richard Koth, 98, formerly of Bethesda, died Jan. 4 at Brooke Grove Foundation assisted living in Olney. Born Sept. 5, 1902 in Wisconsin, he was a son of the late Otto Arnold and Mary Emma Gall Koth. He was the husband of the late Vera F. Koth, who died in 1999. Mr. Koth graduated with an engineering degree from Union College in New York, where he was also a varsity lacrosse player. He began his career surveying railroads in Pennsylvania, and later moved to Washington, D.C. and spent the rest of his working life as a construction engineer for the U.S. government. Mr. Koth was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Bethesda, and enjoyed all sports, woodworking and bird watching. He is survived by two children, Carol K. Thomas of Montgomery Village and Dean Richard Koth of Florida; a sister, Dorothy K. Crow of Gaithersburg; two brothers, George F. Koth of California and Earl Koth of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren . A memorial service was held at Christ Lutheran Church Sunday. Muriel H. Marguerite Dyson Howes Higgins Marguerite Dyson Howes Higgins, 87, of Silver Spring, formerly of Damascus, died Jan. 7 at Brooke Grove Nursing Home in Olney. Born May 26, 1913, in Etchison, Md., she was the daughter of the late John G. and Mamie Watcher Howes. She was the wife of the late George C. Higgins Sr. Mrs. Higgins was a homemaker, but had worked in retail for many years. Her hobbies were cooking, gardening and canning. She was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Sunshine. Mrs. Higgins is survived by seven children, George C. Higgins Jr. of Silver Spring, Barbara A. Curtis of Kensington, Robert L. Higgins of Rockville, Joan M. Pisciotta of Heathsville, Va., Richard Higgins of Hagerstown, Henry K. Jeffrey Anthony Holmes Jeffrey Anthony Holmes, 43, of Laytonsville, died Dec. 27, 2000, at George Washington University Hospital. Born Aug. 11, 1954, he was a son of Vernon Holmes Sr. of Bronx, N.Y. He is also survived by his wife, Venecia G. Holmes, and a brother, Vernon Holmes Jr. of New Jersey. Mr. Holmes was an engineer. He received a bachelor of science degree in engineering in 1979 from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Knox Mr. Weldon R. Knox, 94, of Laytonsville, died Dec. 26, 2000, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Born Nov. 15, 1906, in Maine, he was a son of the late John and Ida Knox. He was the husband of the late Katherine H. Knox, who died in 1994. They had been married for 66 years. Mr. Knox received a bachelor of science degree from Colby College in 1928, where he was on the varsity tennis and ice hockey teams. He earned a master's degree from the University of Connecticut. He began a teaching career in New Milford, Conn., where he became Superintendent of Schools before retiring in 1959. Afterwards, he returned to teaching math at Canterbury School in New Milford. He finally retired and moved to Laytonsville in 1989. Mr. Knox was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Laytonsville and the Damascus Senior Center, where he enjoyed playing bridge. He had been inducted by the town of New Milford, Conn. into "Who's Who" and held many memberships in professional educational associations. He is survived by two daughters, Barbara K. Wood and her husband, Howard, of Tipp City, Ohio, and Phyllis K. Losaw and her husband, William, of Laytonsville. He is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Nichols Sr., 47, of Frederick, formerly of Gaithersburg, died Jan. 2, 2000, at his home. Mr. Nichols had attended Gaithersburg High School and played quarterback on the football team. He was also active with the Boy Scout troops and coached recreation football and soccer. He liked to fish and golf. He was also a Redskins fan. Mr. Nichols worked as a dry wall contractor in construction and also as a bartender in the Frederick area, as well as working at the County Market in Frederick. Besides his mother, he is survived by three children, Edward Timothy Nichols II of Frederick, Kimberly Paige of Cockeysville and Charles Scott Nichols of Baltimore. He is also survived by a sister, Joan Nichols of Gaithersburg; three brothers, Donnie Nichols and Leroy Nichols, both of Adamstown, and Tom Nichols of Gaithersburg; a half-brother, John Kemp of California; his former wife, Carol A. Carol Bell Storm Mrs. Carol Bell Storm, 96, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Baltimore, died Dec. 25, 2000, at the Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg. Born June 30, 1904, in Maryland, she was a daughter of the late George Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth Kemper Bell. She was the wife of the late Frederick Philip Storm, who died in 1989. Mrs. Storm is survived by two sons, F. Philip Storm Jr. and his wife, Dorothy, of Gaithersburg and Carlyle B. Storm of Rhode Island. Lawson, 71, of Germantown died Jan. 6, 2001 at her home. Mrs. Lawson had worked at Vitro in Silver Spring as an electronics solderer and was working as a dining room receptionist at the Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg. Born June 17, 1929, in Clifton Forge, Va. Mrs. Lawson was the daughter of the late Ernest and Ethel Ford Montgomery. She was the wife of the late Arch W. Lawson. Mrs. Lawson is survived by a daughter, Patricia M. Shaw-Johns and her husband James of Germantown; grandchildren Traci Gravely, Timothy Shaw and Richard Shaw, all of Germantown; three great-grandchildren and two brothers, Ernest Montgomery and Richard Montgomery, both of Maryland. Miller Roy M. Miller, 71, of Germantown died Jan. 7, 2001, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. Miller was the special events coordinator for the Coca-Cola Company, and worked for Coca-Cola for 36 years. He was a charter member of Moose Lodge #2473, in Mount Airy. He is survived by his wife, Margaret V. Miller of Germantown; sons Roy W. Miller of Germantown, Joe L. Miller of Burtonsville and Robert L. Miller, of Germantown; daughter Brenda J. Wright of Mount Airy; brother Daniel L. Miller of Myersville; sister Doris V. Bailey of Waycross, Ga.; a special grandson, CJ Miller, along with nine other grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was also a member of the Community Bible Study Group and Youth for Christ. She was the wife of Dwight Merrick McCallum Jr. Born March 4, 1957, in Frederick, she was the daughter of Bernardine Gladhill Beall of Clarksburg and the late Fred Parker Beall. Flanagan, 82, of Silver Spring, died Dec. 11 at his home. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the husband of the late Ann Marie Flanagan. Mr. Flanagan served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He had worked for 15 years at a patent law firm as a researcher. He later worked as a manager in operations for the U.S. Postal Service where he retired after 32 years. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Silver Spring. Mr. Flanagan was a Washington Redskins fan. He liked to shoot pool and was a member of the Billiards Club at Leisure World as well as the Republican Club and garden Club there. Survivors include son, Patrick R. Frobose, 83, formerly of Sunrise-Village House in Montgomery Village, died Dec. 8, 2000, at Casey House in Rockville. She was the wife of the late Richard H. Frobose Sr. She was the daughter of the late Haller Sr. and Anna Pope Snyder. Mrs. Frobose grew up in Cedar Grove. Alster, 85, of Boca Raton, Fla., died on Jan. 9 in Rockville. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and grew up in Orange, N.J. She lived in Boonton, N.J., for 42 years and retired in 1980 from Boonton National Bank where she was the first female vice president. She was a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, as well as a past president of the Boonton Area Chamber of Commerce. She moved to Boca Raton in 1980 and was an active volunteer in Century Village, serving as the financial secretary of Temple Beth Shalom for the past 14 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bertha and Isador Meit; and her brothers, Martin and Edward Meit. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Philipoff of Boca Raton and Rockville; her sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Ann Alster of Gaithersburg, and Ed and Roz Alster of Long Branch, N.J.; her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Robert Fogelson of Montville, N.J.; eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Wagner of Jamaica, N.Y., and Edith Gutman of Monroe Township, N.J. Leonard Irvin Cobb, nuclear physicist Leonard Irvin Cobb of Montgomery Village died Jan. 21. He is survived by his wife, Lana Cobb; one son, Brian Cobb; two daughters, Erin Matthiessen and Laura Matthiesen; one brother, Donald Cobb; and one sister, Dorothea Tompkins. He is also survived by a stepmother, Teresa Cobb; stepdaughters, Linda Flook, Patti Cornell and Kim Rhodes; a half-brother, Jorge Coop; and a half-sister, Norma Cobb. Mr. Cobb served in World War II as a Naval Communications officer. He graduated from the University of Minnesota as a physicist and the University of Oklahoma with a master's degree in public policy. He worked for 12 years as a nuclear physicist with General Electric at Richland, Wash., and in California before coming to the Atomic Energy Commission as a nuclear inspector in 1960. He remained with the AEC until 1975 and he then joined the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the choir at the Covenant United Methodist Church, Montgomery Village. He volunteered as an ESOL teacher for the Hispanic Tutoring Program at Covenant United Methodist Church. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Pentalpha Lodge OES Gaithersburg, a member of the First Baptist Church of Damascus, the Damascus Travel Club, and a member and volunteer for the American Red Cross. Hazel J. Ellis, Elementary school teacher Hazel Johnston Ellis, 83, of Damascus died Jan. 15 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. Mrs. Ellis taught 30 years at Monocacy Elementary School, Barnesville, retiring eight years ago. She was a schoolteacher most of her life, beginning at age 16 and teaching in elementary schools in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Tennessee. She held several important administrative positions within the school system. She earned a master's of science degree in education from the University of Houston and had completed extensive post-graduate work in administration. She was the wife of Glenn Keeton Ellis. Born in Tar River, Okla., she was the daughter of the late William R. and Ercell Buzzard Johnston. Gotz, 89, of Laytonsville, died Jan. 16 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. She was born in Wisconsin. She was the daughter of the late Bernard and Amelia Jacoby. Mrs. Gotz moved to Maryland in 1958. She had worked as a beautician in Wheaton before moving to Gaithersburg where she owned and operated "The Modern Miss" Beauty Shop. She also had worked at Giant Food bakery in Rockville and Montgomery Village stores until retirement. Mrs. Gotz was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Olney. She also loved to garden. Mrs. Gotz is survived by a daughter, Marion E. View United Methodist Church, Damascus, Moose Lodge #1504 of Laurel, Heart of Maryland trap shooters association and the ATA trap shooters. He was the husband of Gloria D. Johnson. Howard Donnally Shelton, Superintendent of steel construction Howard Donnally Shelton, 86, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., formerly of Germantown, died Jan. 16 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. He retired in 1979 from Blake Construction in Washington D.C. as a superintendent of steel construction. He moved from Germantown to Berkeley Springs in 1989. He was a member of American Legion Post 104 in Gaithersburg, and Rodman Local 201 in Washington D.C. Born in Tamarack, N.C., he was the son of the late Joseph Charlie and Virginia Mae Wilson Shelton. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Vivian Margaret Harden Shelton; sisters, Docia Greer and Nell Brown, both of Creston, N.C., brothers, Fred Shelton and Raymond Shelton, both of Creston, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews. Warfield, 79, of Crestwood Village, formerly of Damascus, died Jan. 16 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick. Mr. Warfield was a 1938 graduate of Lisbon High School. After 10 years in private business, he went to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a professional real estate appraiser. He was a member of several appraisal organizations and the American Right of Way Association. Mr. Warfield retired in 1986. Mr. Warfield was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Philanthropic Blue Lodge #168 A.F. & A.M., New Market. He was also a member of the Scottish Rites of Freemasonry in the Valley of Frederick and Baltimore, the Lodge of Perfection and the Rose Croix in Frederick, and a former member of the Damascus Lions Club and Moose Lodge #0371, Frederick. He was a longtime member of the Damascus United Methodist Church, serving as a trustee and member of several church committees. He served as a president of the Sugarloaf Mountain Regional Antique Car Club and a president of the Damascus Travel Club. He was the husband of the late Margaret Peggy Stanley Warfield. Born in Howard County, he was the son of the late E. Watkins and Emma Driver Warfield. Mr. Warfield is survived by a son, Terrance W. Warfield and his wife, Tana, of Frederick, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one brother, Albert W. Warfield of Damascus. He is also survived by in-laws Gertrude Stanley of Crestwood Village and Frederick and Phyllis Walker of Damascus, and a devoted friend, Marjorie McClain of Buckeystown.
