She was the wife of the late John Newell. Born in Carlisle, Iowa, Mrs. Newell graduated from East High School in Des Moines and from Iowa State University in Ames. On April 25, 1941, she married John Newell. They lived in Illinois, Texas and New Mexico before moving to Damascus. Mrs. Newell was a homemaker and enjoyed painting, reading and writing poetry, and reading the bible. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Watkins of Hempstead and Virginia Lusch of Ft. Worth, Texas. Also surviving are one son, John Newell of Tucson, Ariz. and seven grandchildren. Services were held on Monday at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, Iowa. Memorial contributions can be made to Daughters of the American Revolution. Gary L. Noonan Sr., County resident Gary L. Noonan Sr., 55, of Damascus died Feb. 24 at the Montgomery Hospice Casey House, Derwood. He was the husband of Fayette Noonan. Born in Riverdale, he was the son of John Noonan of Damascus and the late Helen Virginia Allan Noonan. Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Christine Taylor of Rockville, Dana Tievy of Mt. Airy, Gary L. Noonan Jr. and Amanda Amlaw, both of Damascus; and five grandchildren. Florence Mae Powell, Painter Florence Mae Powell, 75, of Gaithersburg died Feb. 23. Born Florence Tomasko in Johnstown, Pa., she was the daughter of John and Olga Tomasko of Armagh, Pa. During most of her adult life, Mrs. Powell was a well-known Delmarva painter, crafter and creator of decorative arts. Surviving besides her husband, Curt, are three children, Jeffrey, Karen and Matthew; six grandchildren; and one brother, Henry Powell of Anacortes, Wash. Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by a sister, Bertha; and a brother, George. A memorial service was held Sunday at DeVol Funeral Home, which also handled the arrangements. Edith M. Schmitt, Classical organist Edith M. Schmitt, 85, of Manassas, Va., died Feb. 22 of colon cancer at her home in Manassas. Born Edith Marie Phillips on Aug. 24, 1915, in Weston Mills, N.Y., she was the daughter of Gordon D. Phillips, founder of American Olean Tile Co. Mrs. Schmitt studied classical organ with Arthur Poister at Oberlin and Andre Marchal in Paris. She played in churches around the world, most recently at the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Alexandria, Va., where she retired in 1991 after 18 years. She met and married pianist Elvin F. Schmitt in 1942. After living in Paris, France, Syracuse, N.Y., Des Moines, Iowa, and Barcelona, Spain, Mrs. Schmitt settled in Alexandria, Va., where she lived until in 1991. She was most recently a volunteer at Annanburg Manor and Birmingham Green nursing homes in Manassas. She is survived by daughters, Danielle S. Hansen of Silver Spring and Gae Schmitt Johnson of Manassas, and three grandchildren. Lillian L. Weiss, Charity worker Lillian L Weiss, 82, a longtime resident of Rockville and Silver Spring, died Feb. 19. Mrs. Weiss was born in Boston. Her parents, Isaac and Ethel Deitch, emigrated to Boston from Rigs (now Latvia) in 1912. When Ethel Deitch died in 1919, she was raised by Isaac's sister, Rose Singer. Mrs. Weiss first came to the Washington area during World War II, during which time she was employed by the Department of Wars. During the war she met and later married Dr. Peter J. Weiss. During those years, she worked for the National Institute of Mental Health, the VITRO Corp., and for a number of charitable organizations such as Hadassah Thrift Shop in Silver Spring. Together, they participated in bridge games, enjoyed travel throughout Europe, attended symphony, opera and theater productions, and held membership in the neighborhood swimming pool. They lived in Rockville from 1952 until 1961, when they moved to Silver Spring. In 1999, Mrs. Weiss moved to the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington in Rockville, following her husband's death in 1990. Mrs. Weiss was active in several Israel-focused organizations, in the Bialik Chapter of Hadassah, in Congregation Har Tzeon-Agudath Achim, and in the resettlement of Russian Jews in the Washington D.C. area. Mrs. Weiss is survived by sons, Martin, of Potomac, and Irwin, of Baltimore. Martin and his wife, Ann, have two children, Beth and George. Internment was held Tuesday at Mt. Lebanon cemetery in Adelphi. Mona Masters Wingo, Federal worker Mona Masters Wingo, 90, of Silver Spring, died Jan. 31. She was born in Erie, Mo. She was the daughter of Frank Lester Masters and Cora Boyd Masters Barrett, and the wife of the late Harold Edward Wingo, who died in 1968. She graduated from Goodman High School in Goodman, Mo., and attended business college in Joplin, Mo., then worked in local government in Springfield, Mo., and at Freeman Hospital in Joplin. She was married in 1932 and moved to Washington, D.C., in 1941, working for the Civil Aeronautics Administration and the Commerce Department. She retired to raise her family and served many years as a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed traveling, seeing much of the United States with her husband,and in her later years she traveled to Israel, the British Isles, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. She was an active participant in the swim program at Montgomery College for 15 years from 1984 to 1999, touring to Philadelphia and other cities as a proponent for the program. She was a longtime member of National City Christian Church, having served as deaconess, elder and elder emeritus. She worked at Deborah's House, an outreach program of National City Christian Church in D.C. from 1973 to 1993. Survivors include daughters, Claudia Joy Wingo and husband, Claus Haack, of Silver Spring and Sydney, Aust5ralia, and Treva Ann McLaughlin and husband, John, of Ambler, Pa.; sister, Treva Hastings of Webb City, Mo.; niece, Barbara Long of Sarcoxie, Mo.; and grandchildren, Meg Ann McLaughlin and husband, Michael Gerg, of Charles Town, W.Va., and Mark McLaughlin of Ambler, Pa. Carroll Sr. Thomas H. Carroll Sr., 79, of Inwood, W.Va., formerly of Silver Spring and Woodbine, died Jan. 19 at the Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va. He was the son of the late Clarence and Reba Hoback Carroll, and the husband of D. Lillian Carroll. Mr. Carroll served in the Army in World War II. He owned and operated Carroll and Son Home Construction before retiring in 1962. He enjoyed farming and moved to Inwood after retirement. He also liked to garden and was a lover of trees and nature. He enjoyed traveling and bird watching, and liked to draw and do art work. Besides his wife, he is survived by children, Thomas H. Carroll Jr. and David Carroll of Germantown, and Glenda Jackson and Paul D. Carroll of Rockville; sister, Dorothy Sexton of Rosehill, Va.; half sister, Mary Helen Strader of Ohio; brothers, Enis Carroll of Florida and Lewis Carroll of Pennington Gap, Va.; and five grandchildren. Services were held Jan. 23 at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home in Laytonsville. Burial followed in Salem Cemetery in Brookeville. Zigurds Levensteins Zigurds Levensteins, 71, of Silver Spring, died of a massive heart attack Jan. 22 at the Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth, N.H. Born in Riga, Latvia, Jan. 12, 1930, he was the second son of Aleksandrs and Erna Levensteins. Mr. Levensteins came to the United States in 1949 as a displaced person after spending five years in Displaced Persons camps in Germany. He was a longtime resident of the West Hillandale area and made Waterville Valley, N.H., his second residence after retiring from the Naval Service Warfare Center where he served as an aeronautical engineer for 32 years. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Valda of Silver Spring; daughter, Astrida, of Silver Spring; and son, Andris, and grandson, Niklavs, of Denver, Colo. Mr. Levensteins was an active leader in the Latvian Organizations of Washington, D.C., for more than 30 years. A memorial service was held in the Latvian Ev.-Lutheran Church in Rockville Jan. 29. Frank Goodwyn Frank Goodwyn, 89, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Feb. 15 of heart failure and complications from a broken hip. He was born in Alice, Texas. Mr. Goodwyn moved to Florida from Silver Spring last year. He was a Spanish professor from 1950 to 1981 at the University of Maryland, and he was an author. His works included "Life on the King Ranch," "Lone Star Land," " The Devil in Texas," "Poems About the West," "The Magic of Limping John" and "The Black Bull." Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth; sons, Francis E. of Harlan, Ky., and L. Wayne of Key West and St. Petersburg; brother, Finley of Cuero, Texas; sister, Lenny Province of May, Texas; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Following services in Florida, Mr. Goodwyn was buried in a Rockville cemetery next to his daughter, Janet Ethel Goodwin who died in 1968. Richard A. Peterson Richard Alwin Peterson, 82, of Damascus died March 2, 2001, at his home. He was the husband of the late Winifred Peterson. Born in Wheaton, Ill, he was the son of the late Richard Andre and Faith Hitchcock Peterson. Mr. Peterson was in the Air Force and served in World War II and the Korean War. Surviving are sons Richard E. Peterson and his wife Joanne of Mounty Airy and Wayne C. Peterson of Damascus; grandchildren Laura, Amy and Karen Peterson, and a nephew, Mark Peterson of Minnesota. Memorial contributions may be made to charity. Harriet D. Hintz Harriet D. Hintz of Montgomery Village died March 2, 2001. She was the wife of the late William E. Hintz. She is survived by four children, Kathleen G., David J., Joy E. (Jimon) and Christopher S. Hintz; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas P. Hintz. Arrangements were made by DeVol Funeral Home. Priscilla Jane Cross Priscilla Jane Cross, 82, a resident of Glenmont for 52 years, died Feb. 27 of complications from an infection. Born Sept. 21, 1918, in Baldwin, Kansas, she was the daughter of Orville Scott Morgan and Myrnice Marcia Crysler Morgan. Mrs. Cross attended Baldwin High School, and spent two years at Baker University before transferring to Kansas University Medical Center for nurse's training. During that training, she ranked high in her class and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, a national honor society for nursing students. She received her degree in 1941. While a student at Baker, Mrs. Cross met James Lee Cross and they secretly married Aug. 25, 1941. A second wedding for family and friends was held Valentine's Day 1942. Mrs. Cross worked as a registered nurse as hospitals in Lawrence, Kansas, Urbana, Ill., and San Antonio, Texas. The Crosses moved to Washington, D.C., after World War II; they moved to Wheaton in 1949. Mrs. Cross was a member of the Glenmont Citizens Association and the Glenmont Garden Club in the community's early days. She was instrumental in the preservation of parkland surrounding the creek that passes by Glenmont's recreation center. She was active in local PTA and local bridge clubs. When her children were young, she volunteered as a class mother at Glenmont Elementary School. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, James Lee Cross; daughter, Hallie Davis of Randallstown; son, Jarrett Cross of Clarksburg; six grandchildren; and two great-children. A memorial service will be held at Glenmont United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. March 18. She was the wife of the late Dr. Irl Corley Schoonover. She is survived by three daughters, Beverly Lacy Schoonover-Scott of New Mexico; Marjory Corley Jensen of California; and Elizabeth Schoonover Chipley of Vienna, Va.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A resident of Kensington for more than half a century, she was a kindergarten teacher in Montgomery County Public Schools and an active member of the League of Women Voters. Chambers Funeral Home in Silver Spring handled the arrangements. Edward Lee 'Peanuts' Cochran Edward L. Cochran of Hedgesville, W. Va., died March 4, 2001, at his home. He was the son of the late Earl F. Cochran Sr. and the late Martha C. Cochran. Mr. Cochran was a member of the American Legion Post 211 in Hagerstown, the Elks Club BPO 684 in Frederick, the Moose Lodge No. 2435 in Funkstown and a former member of the Lions Club in Gaithersburg. Mr. Cochran served in the U. S. Marines, as a volunteer fireman at the Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department, a dispatcher for the Montgomery County fire department and retired in 1975 as Montgomery County fire marshal. Surviving Mr. Cochran are two sons, Paul E. Cochran and Steven L. Cochran; a brother, Earl F. Cochran; two grandchildren and two nieces, He was preceded in death by his sister, Grace Clagett. Patricia H. Saxton Mrs. Patricia H. Saxton, 84, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Fredericksburg, Va., died on March 5, 2001, at the Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg. Born Jan. 22, 1917, in New London, Conn., she was a daughter of the late Frank and Marion Brown Hammel. She was the wife of Donald H. Saxton. She graduated from Williams Memorial Institute in New London and attended Connecticut College for Women. Mrs. Saxton had been a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, vice chairperson and member of the Vestal New York School Board, vice chairperson and member of The United Way of Broome County, N.Y., board member and president of United Methodist Women, and hospital volunteer. She also worked as a Welcome Wagon hostess before moving to Poughkeepsie. In Poughkeepsie, she became the administrative assistant to the Psychiatrist, Psychologist and Study Counselor of Vassar College. She had been an active Methodist Church member until her illness. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg. Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Priscilla Lee DeLong and her husband, Edwin DeLong, of Laurel; a son, Donald Ralph Saxton and his wife, Marie, of New Jersey; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mildred Stube and Lillian Ross. DuVall of Gaithersburg and the late Robert E. Windsor Sr. He was the husband of Kathleen A. Windsor. Besides his mother and wife, he is survived by daughters Angela Windsor and Shelby Windsor, both of Gaithersburg, and a sister, Wendy Windsor of Gaithersburg. Sacrison, 94, of Olney, formerly of Santa Cruz, Calif., died March 8 at Potomac Valley Nursing home in Rockville. Born June 19, 1906, in Montana, she was a daughter of the late Homer and Martha Rhino Pilon. Twice married, she is predeceased by her first husband, Walter F. Engler Sr., and her second husband, Levi H. Sacrison. Mrs. Sacrison moved to the Washington area in 1988. She had worked as a waitress and was a homemaker. She was of the Protestant faith and liked to crochet, work crossword puzzles and read. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Thelma M. Engler of Olney; and three grandchildren and five great-grandsons.She was predeceased by a son, Walter F. Engler Jr. Graveside and burial services will be held at 10 a.m. March 15 at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Mrs. Gladhill was a member of the Damascus United Methodist Church and a life Member of the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was awarded the first Honey King Trophy awarded by the Maryland Fireman's Association. She was the wife of Bernard D. "Buck" Gladhill. Born Nov. 23, 1910 in Damascus, she was a daughter of the late Albert Norris and Madeline King Scott. Mrs. Gladhill graduated from Damascus High School in 1927. After graduation from Strayer College, she was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company in Washington, D.C. She returned to Damascus to marry her husband, "Buck," of 69 years. Surviving besides her husband are children Mary Gladhill Grimes and her husband Ray of McKnightstown, Pa., Bernardine Gladhill Beall of Clarksburg and Maurice Albert Gladhill and his wife Mary Lee of Frederick; 11 grandchildren and 18 great- grandchildren. Mrs. Gladhill was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Upton Gladhill, a granddaughter, Joy Beall McCallum, and a sister, Helen Scott Horman. Gonzales, 89, of Damascus died March 12, 2001 at Brooke Grove Nursing Center, Olney. She was the wife of the late Thomas E. Gonzales. Mrs. Gonzales was a retired supervisor with C & P Telephone Co. She was a member of St. Camillus Catholic Church in Silver Spring, and she was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Born May 25, 1911, in Washington D.C., she was a daughter of the late James Joseph and Mamie Hines Bell. Surviving her are nieces Alma Hughes of Damascus, Carolyn Clarke of Germantown, Margaret Thank of Nags Head, N.C., and Anne Marschall of Sun City Hilton, S.C., and a nephew, James Hart of Rohrersville. Mrs. Gonzales was preceded in death by sisters Helen G. Hunley and Alma M. Hart, a brother, James M. Bell and nephews Stephen Hart and William Hunley. Beck and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Cedar Grove. Born April 29, 1949, in Washington D.C., she was the daughter of Jane Long Betz of Rockville and the late James S. Long Sr. Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are one son, Kevin R. Beck of Rockingham, N.C.; sisters Mary Jane Euler and Patricia Danoff; and brothers James S. Long Jr. and Edwin L. Long. Brehm Emma Nelson Brehm, 92, of Germantown died March 13, 2001, at home. She was a former journalist, teacher and real estate broker. She was born Sept. 30, 1908, in Charlotte, N.C. Mrs. Brehm worked for the Dallas Morning News in the 1940s as a columnist, and lived in New Jersey and California before moving to Germantown in 1999. Mrs. Brehm was a past president and active member of many organizations, including the Girl Scouts and the Eagle Rock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in New Jersey. Mrs. Brehm was also an active supporter of organizations whose interest involved the humane treatment of animals. She attended Cedar Brook Community Church in Clarksburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank. She is survived by daughters Winnie Humphrey of North Port, Fla., Vicki Patino of Germantown and Pat Provost of Oak Ridge, N.J.; grandchildren Shawn Humphrey, Cristina Patino, Randy Humphrey, Ryan Humphrey, Holdi Humphrey, Lauren Provost and Veronica Patino; and four great-grandchildren. Frances Lydia Denham Frances Lydia Denham, 87, of Gaithersburg, died March 13, 2001, at the Lorien Nursing Home, Mt. Airy, Md. She was the daughter of the late Leou and Lydia Johnston of Manhattan, N. Y. Her mother's maiden name was Lydia Jarvela. Both parents were born in Finland. Born Jan. 1, 1914, in Manhattan, Mrs. Denham lived in North Stonington, Conn. She moved to Westerly, R.I., where she graduated from Westerly High School. Before retirement, Mrs. Denham worked as a secretary. She was married to the late Christopher J. Denham Jr. of New Bedford, Mass. Frances lived in Melbourne, Fla. before moving to Gaithersburg. She is survived by her two sons, Ronald C. Denham of Waldorf and Christopher J. Dedham III and his wife, Susan R. Denham, of Clarksburg; two grandchildren, Jason C. Denham and Charles C. Denham and his wife, Christy; and two great grandchildren, Michael and Erica Denham. Services and burial will be private. Born in Beverly, Mass., on May 21, 1923, Mr. Wykes received a Ph.D. from Purdue University and worked as a Toxicologist/Pharmacologist. His community affiliations included commander of the Rockville Power Squadron, Boating Educational and Safety Organization and a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. Mr. Wykes was a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society and former president and lifetime member of the Association of Government Toxicology. He is survived by his wife Mary; a daughter, Pamela, and her husband, William, Jr. III; a son, Paul Arthur, and his wife, Kendall; and grandchildren, Megan, Lindsey and William Jr. IV. A viewing will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Grace United Methodist Church, 119 North Frederick Ave. in Gaithersburg. Edith Z. Young Mrs. Edith Z. Young, 82, of Laytonsville died March 17, 2001, at Friends Nursing Home in Sandy Spring. Born September 12, 1918, in Union County, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Minnie Susan Sauers Zimmerman. She was the wife of John P. Young. Mrs. Young was a homemaker, as well as having worked at the National Radio Relay League office in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Gaithersburg Church of Nazarene. She enjoyed baking and traveling. She was also a seamstress. She had been the navigator for her husband when he flew his private plane. Besides her husband she is survived by two children, David Parker Young of Massachusetts and Ruth Susan Vodola of Reston, Va; two grandchildren, Bruce and Brian Yong of Massachusetts; two great grandchildren, Kayla and Kyle Yong of Massachusetts. two sisters, Evelyn Pick of Pennsylvania and Betty Davis of Kansas; and a brother, Ralph Zimmerman of Pennsylvania. He was the husband of Belva Schwartzbeck Bower for the l 48 years. He was born in Chilhowie, Va. He was the son of Dora V. Hurley and the late John Mack Bower Sr. He was employed at the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission for 34 years. After his retirement he began his own business in Bower Trucking and continued in self-employment for 13 years. After his second retirement, Mr. Bower enjoyed gardening, traveling in his motor home and other outdoor activities, such as motorcycling and boating. Mr. Bower was known for accomplishing challenges, such as building his own home, garage and patio. No task was too large for his handy work. He was a member of Dawsonville Mennonite Church. Mr. Bower was preceded in death by his oldest son, Larry Mack Bower. In addition to his wife, he was survived by two children, Michael R. Bower, Teresa Bower Witt and her husband, James S. R. Witt, all of Dickerson; a brother, Clifford Bower of Boyds; and a sister, Ann Litton of Virginia; a half-brother Rex Blevins of Germantown; two-half sisters, Barbara Jekel of North Carolina and Sandy Rife of Virginia; four grandchildren, Lawrence Bower, Amanda Bower, Andrew and Angela Witt; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Interment was in the Monocacy Cemetery, Beallesville. Julia Jeanne Bailey Julia J. Bailey, 85, of Gaithersburg, died at her son's home in Adamstown, Md., on March 20, 2001. Her husband, Horace C. Bailey of Gaithersburg, whom she married on October 5, 1940, survives her. Born June 9, 1915, in Walton, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Rosalie Baumgardner also of Walton. Mr. and Mrs. Bailey lived many years in the Sandy Spring area of Montgomery County. She worked in public relations for the old Co-op Consumer Services in Greenbelt and was active in the PTA at Sherwood High School where she later became an administrative secretary. She helped organize the Sandy Spring Theatre Group and remained an active member for many years. In 1969 she retired and moved with her husband to Amissville, Va., and returned to the Gaithersburg area in 1978. Since then she had been involved with the Montgomery County Fair in the Old Timers division where she won many blue ribbons including Grand Champion Baker of Montgomery County. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Michael C. Bailey of Brookeville, and Samuel D. Bailey and his wife, Stevie, of Adamstown, Md.; two grandchildren; and two step grandchildren. Gannon, died March 17, 2001, at Bayview Nursing Center. Mrs. Gannon was born on Jan. 10, 1925, in Woodfield, Md., to the late George Pope and Pearl Ward Pope. She was an alumnus of Loyola University, Chicago, Ill. She was a retired budget analyst for the Navy Civil Service. She attended Port Royal United Methodist Church. Besides her husband of Port Royal;, she is survived by five sons, Tom Bogley of Spokane, Wash., Al Bogley of Albany, Ga., Craig Bogley of Chester, Va., Jack Gannon of Beaufort, and Shawn Gannon of Goose Creek; a sister, Mary Esthel Boyer of Bakerton, W.Va. and seven grandchildren. Heider, 88, formerly of Gaithersburg, died March 19, 2001, at the Wilson Health Care Center of the Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg. Born in West Salem, Wis., he was a 21-year resident of Asbury Methodist Village and a 60-year resident of Washington, D.C. He graduated in 1934 from the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Heider became a member of Eta Kappa Nu fraternity in 1933, a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1962 and served as president of the D.C. Society of Professional Engineers in 1968. He worked for several government agencies during his career, as well as a civilian engineer for the Department of the Navy, Bureau of Ships, the National Science Foundation and retired from the Housing Standards section of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1980. He is survived by his son, Robert L. Heider of Gaithersburg; and three grandchildren, Robin, Kellie and Peter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his brother, Maynard; and a sister, Alta. Cremation arrangements are being done by DeVol Funeral Home of Gaithersburg. Charlotte L. Miller Charlotte L. Miller, formerly of Gaithersburg, died March 20, 2001. She was the beloved wife of Byron H. Miller. Besides her husband, Mrs. Miller is survived by two children, Karlene Y. Adams of Gettysburg, Pa., and Byron L. "Betty" Mitchell, 80, of Montgomery Village, formerly of Annandale, Va., died on March 23, 2001, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born February 15, 1921, in Illinois she was a daughter of the late Jefferson Joseph and Marie Pfeifer McGraw. She was the wife of the late John E. Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Gaithersburg. She is survived by two sons, John P. Mitchell of Laytonsville and Michael P. Mitchell of Fairfax, Va.; and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sunrise of Montgomery Village, 19310 Clubhouse Road, Montgomery Village. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville. Henrietta Elizabeth R. Costolo Henrietta Elizabeth Rossmann Costolo, 95, died March 13 at Brooke Grove Nursing Home in Sandy Spring. Mrs. Costolo was born Jan. 22, 1906, in Pittsburgh. She was a daughter of the late William Rossmann and Henrietta Elizabeth Grimm. She had 10 brothers and sisters: Frederick, Clara, August, Maria, George, Merle, Walter, Naomi, Mildred and Frieda. After high school, Mrs. Costolo went to a business school to become a secretary, and worked at Jones and Laughlin Steel Co. In 1933, she married Charles Larimer Costolo. After they were married, they built a stone house in Mt. Lebanon, Pa. Their son, Charles Larimer Jr., was born in 1935. Due to the Depression, they had to leave the house they built and move to Bridgeville, Pa. There they had a daughter, Yetta Carol, in 1939. Later, they moved back into the city to Beechview, where they lived until Mr. Costolo's death in 1958. As a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Pittsburgh, she taught Sunday School, was in charge of church dinners and participated in many other church groups. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star, which she joined in 1934. She served as its matron from 1934-35 and was secretary for her chapter for 50 years. She was a member for over 70 years. She worked for the Board of Elections in Allegheny County for many years and as a secretary for St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh. She retired in 1981 at the age of 75. In 1992, Mrs. Costolo moved to Rockville to be close to her family. She was able to live on her own until the age of 93. She moved into Brooke Grove Nursing Home in 1999 and was still active making many friends and enjoying many social activities. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, where she made many close friends. Mrs. Costolo loved to read, bake bread, do needlepoint, quilt, crochet and knit, play bingo, cards and games, and go to bible study and church. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Yetta and Joe Churilla of Olney; a daughter-in-law, Georgia Costolo of Gaithersburg; two sisters, Maria Fisher of California and Frieda Weniger of Pennsylvania; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A prayer service was held March 15 at De Vol Funeral Home in Gaithersburg. Burial was March 16 at Mt. Nutter, 89, of Silver Spring died March 12, 2001. She was a homemaker. She is survived by husband John B. Nutter; children Elinor N. Gooding, Betty H. Fulton and Patricia A. She is also survived by her niece and nephew Kathryn Gordy of Charleston, S.C., and Raymond Godman of Savannah, Ga.
