Born June 9, 1953, in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late Irving Benjamin and Mary Ellen Fiedler Hurwitz. Mr. Hurwitz served in the U.S. Navy from 1973 to 1974. He worked as an automotive parts salesman. He is survived by five children, Wesley R. Hurwitz of Fairfax, Va., Keith E. Hurwitz of Phoenix, Ariz., Michelle L. Hurwitz of Greenbelt, Chelsey A. Hurwitz and Michael R. Hurwitz of Westminster; two sisters, Beverly J. Hurwitz of Louisville, Ky., and Linda S. Howard of Gaithersburg; one brother, John W. Hurwitz of Germantown; many nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Peggy Barott of Greenbelt. Friends may visit 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Muriel H. Arrangements were made by Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home. Arthur F. Layman Mr. Arthur F. "Curly" Layman, 85, of Gaithersburg died June 28, 2001, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born Aug. 17, 1915, in Maryland, he was a son of the late Jacob Andrew and Mary Alberta Miller Layman. He was the husband of the late Dorothy L. Layman. Mr. Layman worked for Douglas Diamond Farms as a farmer and was a partner from 1949 to 1968. He was self-employed as a farmer from 1968 until 1972. He worked for Montgomery Vault Co. in Rockville from 1972 until 1988. Mr. Layman was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg for more than 40 years and served as an usher there for many years. Mr. Layman is survived by two special friends, Roberta "Bobbi" Rule of Germantown and Jennifer Casti of Gaithersburg. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters and seven brothers. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Epworth United Methodist Church, 9008 Rosemont Drive, Gaithersburg. Born Irene Wilma Helzer in Colorado, she received her degree in nursing from St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver. She was married to Edward D. Clear, a musician, until his death in 1956. She later married Kenneth R. Whittemore, an accountant, and lived in New York, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida and Wheaton until his death in 1991. A registered nurse, Irene Clear Whittemore practiced private duty, institutional and industrial nursing for more than 55 years. After retiring she relocated back to Maryland in 1992 where she resided with her son in Gaithersburg for her remaining years. She was an active member of the Gaithersburg Upcounty Senior Center and of Covenant Life Church. She is survived by brothers Gerald Helzer of Salt Lake City; Kenneth Helzer of Lakewood, Calif.; and Richard Helzer of McMinnville, Ore.; her sisters Evelyn Hall of Orange Park, Fla.; Mickie Ardissone of Lompoc, Calif.; and Vickie Debban of Burbank, Calif.; sons Taylor Jesse Clear of Spotsylvania, Va. and Paul Whittemore of Gaithersburg; stepdaughter Ruth Whittemore Kennedy of Columbus, Ohio; and stepsons Richard Roy Whittemore of Apex, N.C. and Kenneth Whittemore Jr. of Nevada City, Calif. Weiner, 65, a public relations executive and charitable fund- raiser, died of cancer June 19 at Casey House in Rockville. Since 1994, Mrs. Weiner had been the director of development for Community Psychiatric Clinic, a community mental health organization that had served Montgomery County since 1935. There, she introduced a number of innovative fund- raising events for the organization including her signature "Power Teas." Before joining the clinic, she led a successful capital campaign for St. Luke's House, an organization in Bethesda that provides housing and rehabilitation services to adults with serious and persistent mental illness. Mrs. Weiner also served as director of development for the Levine School of Music in Washington where she doubled annual giving for the school and helped secure funding for the school from the National Endowment of the Arts. In addition to her husband, Saul D. Weiner, she is survived by her mother, Frieda Hirzler of Bethesda; two sons, Jonathan W. Weiner of London and Nicolas G. Weiner of Washington, D.C.; three stepchildren, Douglas Lampman of Idaho, Claudia Lampman of Alaska and Danielle Eggers of Illinois; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Rudolph Martin Palmer Sr. Rudolph Martin Palmer Sr., 86, of Silver Spring died June 27, 2001. He was retired as a railway mail clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and also worked as an Electrolux salesman for more than 25 years. He was born Sept. 26, 1914, in Fort Defiance, Va. the son of John D. Palmer and Hazel E. Martin Palmer. He is survived by his wife, Mossie E. Palmer; children R. Martin Palmer Jr. of Hagerstown, Maynard E. Palmer of Gaithersburg, J. David Palmer of New Freedom, Pa, Richard H. Boswell Glenda Rae Boswell, 51, of Gaithersburg, died July 6, 2001, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital from complications from Lupus. Born in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of Frederick B. and Rozella Dalton Seaman. She was the wife of Harry E. Boswell. Mrs. Boswell was a 1967 graduate of Oxen Hill High School in Oxen Hill and worked as an Operations Manager for the Office of Management Administration Program Offices and the Office of the Secretary of Energy. Surviving besides her husband and parents are two sons, Andrew E. Boswell and Jeffery P. Boswell of Gaithersburg; one brother, Thomas Seaman of King George, Va.; and one sister, Carla Capozzoli of Medway, Mass. Esworthy, 60, of Gaithersburg, died July 7 at Lorien Nursing Center in Mount Airy. Born in Darnestown, he was a son of the late George Curtis and Helen Benson Esworthy. Mr. Esworthy was a 1958 graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville. He served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a dispatcher for the Maryland State Police then as a payroll specialist with IBM until his retirement. After retirement he went on to work in the security division of Lockheed Martin. Mr. Esworthy served on the Board of Directors of Villa Ridge Condominiums in Gaithersburg and also a board with the city of Gaithersburg. Surviving him are a sister Dorothy H. Magers and her husband, William T. Magers, of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a brother, George Frank Esworthy and his wife, Sue, of Ijamsville; three nieces, Pam Sneed, Joy Wilson and Kim Esworthy; two nephews, Stephen Sutherland and Ray Sutherland; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Olin L. Molesworth P.A., Funeral Home, Damascus. Burial was in Darnestown Presbyterian Cemetery, Rockville. Emmette A. Keese Mr. Emmette A. Keese, 70, of Washington Grove died of cancer July 9. Mr. Keese was a systems engineer for Lockheed Martin and formerly test manager of the original Global Position System team at IBM Gaithersburg. A graduate of Georgia Tech, Mr. Keese served a five-year stint in the United States Navy. He then became a flight test engineer for Lockheed in Marietta, Ga. He then served as vice president of Aeroscience Corporation in Atlanta, Ga. He later joined IBM's Government Services Division. Mr. Keese served the town of Washington Grove in various capacities including town councilman and chairman of the Board of Zoning Appeals. The son of Myrtis Fincher Keese and Emmette A. Keese Sr., Mr. Keese is survived by his wife, Leila Haywood Keese. He is also survived by Stephen A. Keese of Charlottesville, Va., Kimberly M. Keese of Washington, D.C., Bradley W. Christ of Bethesda, Bryan W. Christ of Woodbine, Brent F. Christ of Frederick; and grandsons Patrick A. Keese, James R. Keese and Austin A. Combs. Mr. Keese also considered his fellow townspeople in Washington Grove his extended family. Va., 25411. Joyce Mills Joyce Mills, 86, died July 4 at Shady Grove Rehabilitation Center of congestive heart failure. Mills, who was born in Underwood, Minn., moved to Maryland in 1935. She was married for more than 60 years to Sidney Lee Mills of Gaithersburg, who died in 1999. She is survived by two children, Conrad Lee Mills and his wife, Irene, and Connie Joy Hudson Zulick and her husband, James, all of Gaithersburg; one brother, Williard R. Christensen of Gaithersburg; five granddaughters; and four great grandsons. Mills was an avid reader who enjoyed poetry and could recite many verses from memory. Services were held on Monday at Travilah Baptist Church in Gaithersburg. Pastor Aaron Miller presided over services. Burial was at Forest Oak Cemetery. Marion Selby Marion "Bub" Selby, 72, of Gaithersburg, died July 2 at Casey House in Rockville. Mr. Selby was born in Gaithersburg, the son of the late Marion Wesley Selby Sr. and Naomi Selby. He was a billiard and pool table salesman. He is survived by his wife, Joan Brenk-Selby; two sons, William D. Brenk and Marion W. Selby III; two daughters, Patricia Roberts and Deborah Thrasher; four grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, Nicholas and Shane; a sister, Faye Dean; and friend John Grimes. In addition to her husband, Saul D. Weiner, she is survived by her mother, Frieda Hirzler of Bethesda; two sons, Jonathan W. Weiner of London and Nicolas G. Trattner Dorothy M. Trattner, 65, of Rockville, died July 4 at Casey House in Derwood after a lengthy battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Henry Trattner; two daughters, Sandy Keefer and Suzy Wood; a sister, Shirley Ludwick; and two grandchildren. Ciamarra Anthony Eugene "Gene" Ciamarra, 68, of Celebration, Fla., formerly of Rockville, died June 30. Born and raised in Baltimore, he lived in Rockville for many years before moving to Florida in 1990. Mr. Ciamarra serviced in a number of senior financial capacities with Martin Marietta in Baltimore, New York City, Bethesda and Orlando. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Teresa A. Ciamarra; three sons, Michael of Alabama, Mark of Illinois and Tony of Florida; a daughter, Kathleen Mullsteff of Virginia; two daughters-in-law and one son-in-law; and 10 grandchildren. Duncan James T. Duncan of Rockville died July 11 at his Twinbrook home following complications from diabetes. He was the father of Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. Mr. Duncan, 75, the son of a U.S. Army officer, was born in Paris, France, and came to Washington, D.C., in 1941. After graduating from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in 1949, he worked for the National Security Agency as a cryptanalyst for more than two decades. Upon his retirement, Mr. Duncan served for 10 years as an volunteer tutor and ESOL teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools. He was a recipient of the Nancy Dworkin Award, presented by the county Commission on Children and Youth. His was a parishioner at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rockville and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Eleanor Hughes Duncan of Rockville; six sons, the county executive, of Rockville, Dwight G. Duncan of Boston, Bruce X. Duncan of Hagerstown, James T. Duncan Jr. of England, Glenn P. Duncan of Clarksville and Brian T. Duncan of Glendale, Calif.; seven daughters, Marie Therese Frank of Boston, Lee Anne Gerrick of Rockville, Mary Joan Raff of Darnestown, Nellie Lide of Rockville, Bernadette Zabel of Ellicott City, Mary Anne Harris of England and Monica Martinson of Evanston, Ill.; a brother, Donald Duncan of Mt. Joseph "Gene" Bonin Mr. Joseph "Gene" Bonin, 83, of Damascus died of cardiomyopathy July 15, 2001, at Casey House in Rockville. Born Jan. 18, 1918, in Willimantic, Conn., he was the son of the late Emeede and Lillian Bourey Bonin. Mr. Bonin was a truck driver for Republic Oil Company and retired in 1980. His hobbies included bowling, playing pool and being a member of "The Kitchen Band." He is survived by his wife, Ann Bonin of Damascus; three sons, Thomas Bonin, Gregory Bonin and William Bonin; three daughters, Deborah, Beverly and Paula Bonin, all of Damascus,; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one sister, Lillian Bonin of Florida. Ross, 60, of Damascus died of cancer July 5, 2001, at Montgomery General Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia A. Ross. Born Aug. 17, 1940, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Sanford and Margaret Gauvreau Ross. Mr. Ross worked for Pioneer Technologies for 31 years and retired as senior vice president. Surviving in addition to his wife three are daughters, Geanann Ross, Charla Ross and Mary Margaret Ross Trickler; two brothers, Philip and John Ross; two sisters, Sandra Gaal and Geannie Hummel; and 10 grandchildren. Doyle "Sonny" Burke Doyle "Sonny" Burke, former resident of Gaithersburg and former owner of The Blackhawk Detective Agency in Gaithersburg, died of leukemia in Mesa, Ariz. He is survived by his mother, Bessie Magruder of Rockville; his wife, Shirley; five daughters, Tammie, Renee, Kelly, Melissa and Paula; five grandchildren; and four sisters, Erma, Pauline, Bernice and Janet. Any donations should go to the Leukemia Foundation. Jack D. Reid Jack D. Reid, 79, of Gaithersburg, died July 7, 2001, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born March 29, 1922, in New Jersey, he was a son of the late George T. and Emma Clayton Reid. He was the husband of Margarette Snyder Reid. Mr. Reid served in the U.S. Navy, World War II. He was a music teacher and had worked at Jordan Kitt Music Company. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Laurel Gill of Laytonsville; a sister, Janet Beith of Florida; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Heather Reid. Rineer William A. Rineer, 79, of Rockville, died July 5 at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium, Md. Born in Lancaster, Pa., he was a 1940 graduate of McCaskey High School in Lancaster. After serving in the armed forces during World War II, he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration in 1949 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree in business from Pennsylvania State University. He taught business courses at Central Dauphin High School in Harrisburg, Wheaton High School in Montgomery County and Frederick Community College in Frederick. He also taught stenotype machine at American Business School in Washington, D.C. Mr. Rineer played organ, handbells and piano at many churches in the Rockville area and sang in various choral groups. He also enjoyed tap dancing, taking lessons until age 79. He is survived by his twin brother, Robert D. Rineer of Lancaster; two sisters, Mildred and husband Harold Bechtold of Lititz, and Martha and husband T. William Waldrop of New Holland, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. July 20 at Crusader Lutheran Church, 1605 Veirs Mill Road in Rockville. Daniel J. Kohn Daniel Jeffrey Kohn, 34, of Atlanta, died from a brain tumor at Atlanta Hospice in Georgia. Mr. Kohn, who was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Rockville, was a 1985 graduate of Wootton High School. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Miami University of Ohio in 1989, a master's degree in sociology from the University of Maryland in 1992, and worked for Kaiser Permanente as a family and child therapist until he was diagnosed with brain cancer in October 1997. While battling cancer, Kohn authored a children's book, "The Cats of Inman Park," which focused on lessons of tolerance and diversity. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Rabinowitz Kohn of Atlanta; his mother, Leah Jaffee of Gaithersburg; his father, Richard Kohn of New York; his brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Andrea Kohn of Rockville; and three nephews. He was buried July 1 at Crestlawn Cemetery in Atlanta. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. July 22 at Temple Beth Ami on Travillah Road in North Potomac. He was the husband of Ruth Clifford; father of six children, Thomas Clifford and Joseph, Herbert, Steven and Daniel Wolford, and the late Timothy Clifford; and nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. Services will be held at 10 a.m. July 24 at Arlington National Cemetery. Welty Sr. Lawrence H. "Howard" Welty Sr., 64, of Bloomery, W.Va., died July 9 at the Veterans Administration Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. He was born April 10, 1937, in St. Louis, Mo., to Jesse Welty and Bernice Hanks Welty. He was a truck driver for USF Glen Moore Transportation in Carlisle, Pa., and a member of Maranatha Baptist Church in Romney, W.Va. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1963. He is survived by his wife, Anna Welty, of Bloomery; four daughters, Sarah R. Lambert of Kinston, N.C., Patrician A. McCormick of Rockville, Linda J. Adkins of Augusta, W.Va., and Viola B. Fee of Shanks, W.Va.; two sons, Lawrence H. Welty Jr. and Michael D. Welty, both of Bloomery; and 31 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Robert W. Mackey Robert Wilson Mackey, 88, most recently of Aspen Hill, formerly of Naples, Fla., died July 6 at Casey House Hospice in Derwood. Born and raised in Waterbury, Conn., he had lived in Naples for 25 years before moving to Montgomery County in April. His wife of 59 years, Jane, passed away in August 2000. He attended Amherst College and was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from the Anaconda American Brass Co. after a long career as an industrial sales manager. He was an avid bridge player and golfer. Private services will be held in Waterbury, Conn. *****July 25, 2001***** Madeline Holdsworth Mrs. Madeline Holdsworth, 72, of Clarksburg, died July 21, 2001, at Suburban Hospital. Born Feb. 24, 1929, in Lewis County, W. Va., she was the daughter of Clifford B. Taylor and Clara Smith Taylor. She was a 1954 graduate of the Union Protestant School of Nursing. Survivors include her husband, Leslie D. Holdsworth; three sons, Leslie D. Jr. of Frederick, Gerald P. of Germantown and Daryl C. of Hagerstown and his wife, Kimberly; three grandchildren, Ashley, Stephanie and Daryn; one brother, Charles W. Taylor and his wife, Melwin; two nephews; two great-nephews; one great-niece; and her father-in-law, Leslie Holdsworth of Lake Wales, Fla. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at the Hyattstown United Methodist Church at a future date. Memorial donations may be made to Hyattstown United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society. Charles L. Pfeiffer Charles L. Pfeiffer, 88, of Tampa and formerly of Gaithersburg, died July 22, 2001. He was born in Bedford, Pa., on Jan. 30, 1913. He is survived by two daughters, Sally J. Lewis of Ocala, Fla., and formerly of Damascus, and Janet A. Stair of Norcross, Ga., and formerly of Woodfield; two sons, Bruce C. Pfeiffer of Richmond, Va., and Paul R. Pfeiffer of Tampa, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren whom will affectionately and fondly remember him as "Pop." He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Clatha Lenette Moyer Pfeiffer, and his parents, Charles Edward Pfeiffer and Mary Witt Pfeiffer. Mr. Pfeiffer served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Mr. Pfeiffer resided with his family in Cumberland, Md., for nearly 50 years before relocating to Gaithersburg where he was employed at Gaithersburg Farmers Supply. Mr. Pfeiffer and his wife retired to Tampa, Fla., in June 1978. He was a member of the Palma Ceia United Methodist Church. Dorothy Ann (Kelly) Fields Dorothy Ann (Kelly) Fields of Half Moon Bay, Calif., formerly of Montgomery Village, died July 11 in Gaithersburg. She was born June 30, 1954, in Amityville, N.Y. She is survived by her daughter, Marina Rose Fields of Half Moon Bay; a sister, Nancy Kelly of Montgomery Village; and her brother, Thomas Kelly of New York. William Henry Stinson, Sr. Mr. William Henry Stinson Sr., 80, of Goshen died July 16, 2001, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born Oct. 18, 1920, in Maryland, he was a son of the late William Henry III and Achsah Waters Stinson. He was the husband of Mary Louise Riggs Stinson. Mr. Stinson was a graduate of Ellicott City High School in Ellicott City. He served in the Army in World War II. He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Laytonsville. He had retired from Ligon and Ligon Inc. in Baltimore where he had served as vice president. Mr. Stinson was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Besides his wife, he is survived by four children, William Henry Stinson Jr. of Laytonsville, Marie S. Dubel of Laytonsville, Sally S. Colella of Kensington and David R. Stinson of Clifton, Va.; a brother, McCubbin Stinson of Florida; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Glenwood. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Glenwood. The Muriel H. Barber funeral home in Laytonsville handled the arrangements. Shugarts-Abbate Joseph "Gene" Bonin Mr. Joseph "Gene" Bonin, 83, of Damascus died of cardiomyopathy July 15, 2001, at Casey House in Rockville. Born Jan. 18, 1918, in Willimantic, Conn., he was the son of the late Emeede and Lillian Bourey Bonin. Mr. Bonin was a truck driver for Republic Oil Company and retired in 1980. His hobbies included bowling, playing pool and being a member of "The Kitchen Band." He is survived by his wife, Ann Bonin of Damascus; three sons, Thomas Bonin, Gregory Bonin and William Bonin; three daughters, Deborah, Beverly and Paula Bonin, all of Damascus; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one sister, Lillian Bonin of Florida.
