Mrs. Hancock is survived by her husband Oleuss F. Pat Hancock; children Nancy J. Sharby, John P. and Patricia A. Hancock; her brother, Rev. Ramon Reno, eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. A service was held Friday at First Alliance Church, Silver Spring. Burial followed at George Washington Cemetery. Monaghan Mrs. Rita C. "Bubba" Monaghan, 81, of Montgomery Village died July 29, 2001, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Joseph Victor Monaghan, who died Feb. 1, 1987. Born June 18, 1920, in Atlantic City, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Daniel Curran and Catherine Roddy. She was a member of the St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Mrs. Monaghan worked as a hairdresser for many years. She is survived by five children, Michelle, Stephen, Victor, Roddy and Peggy Monaghan; one sister, Catherine R. Dawson; seven grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 9000 Warfield Road, Gaithersburg. The Rev. Fr. Tam Tran will officiate. Born Feb. 14, 1964 in Alexandria, Va., he was the son of Richard R. Davis of Remser, N.Y. and Bernice Davis Ball of Warrenton, Va. and the son-in-law of the late Vincent and Rena Atkins of Front Royal, Va. Mr. Davis was a devoted NASCAR, hockey and football fan. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Atkins Davis; his parents; his stepfather Larry Ball; six nieces and two great-nephews. He was recently preceded in death by his grandparents, Pauline and Bernard Westlund. A funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Washington Masonic Cemetery in Washington D.C. and will be officiated by the Rev. Aaron Miller. Burial will follow. Charles D. Kidwell Charles D. "Doc" Kidwell, 68, of Hagerstown, formerly of Rockville, died July 15 at his home. Born Aug. 18, 1932, in Maryland, he was a son of the late Joseph S. and Mary E. Curtin Kidwell. He was the husband of Joyce Drain Kidwell. Mr. Kidwell was employed at Ivy H. Smith Co./Rockingham Construction Co. for approximately 25 years and then worked in fencing and decking construction for 20 years before becoming ill with cancer. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1540 and Amvets Post 002 in Frederick. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed dancing and country-western bands. He loved fishing, the Washington Redskins, the Baltimore Orioles and horseshoes. Besides his wife, survivors include nine children, C. Michael Kidwell and wife Joyce of Hagerstown, Keith Miles of Gettysburg, Rick Miles and wife Doris of Germantown, Brian Miles and wife Peggy of Rockville, Mary McKinnon and husband Eddie of Biglerville, Pa., Margie Kidwell of Germantown, Kim Webb and husband David of Frederick, Jill Wolford and husband Steve of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Dubie Wright and husband Ronnie of Frederick; and a special son, Randy Crook and wife Mindy of Coleman, Ga. Joan Harris Lautman Joan Harris Lautman, 69, writer, theater critic and associate professor of English at Montgomery College, died July 25 at the Washington Home and Hospice in Washington, D.C. She had lung cancer. Mrs. Lautman, a resident of Takoma Park for 15 years, was born in Detroit and grew up in Indiana. She lived in the Boston area from 1957 until her move to Washington, D.C. in 1986. She received her bachelor of arts and master's degrees in theater history from Tufts University and worked as a theater critic for several magazines and newspapers in Boston, New York and Washington, including Stages, The Gazette, The Patriot-Ledger and The Montgomery Journal. She had been with Montgomery College since 1989, first as an adjunct professor and director of the Technical Preparation Program and then as Associate Professor of English. Ms. Lautman was active in numerous political campaigns in Boston and Montgomery County. She was a member of The American Theater Critics Association, The American Association of University Professors, The NAACP, B'nai B'rith, The Southern Poverty Law Center, the Kennedy Center, Parents United, The Folger Library, and Women in the Arts. Her marriage to the late Don A. Lautman ended in divorce. She is survived by three children, David Lautman of Reading, Mass., Barbara Lautman of Washington, D.C. and Rebekah Lautman of Melbourne, Australia and eight grandchildren. Miles, 90, of Burtonsville died July 26, 2001, at Montgomery General Hospital, Olney. She lived in Burtonsville for 69 years. She was born Aug. 4, 1910 in Howard County. She married Edward Miles in 1932 and they raised produce and sold vegetables at a roadside stand. They sold eggs, chickens and produce. Mrs. Miles was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fulton. She is survived by her children, Carl E. Miles and Betty E. Griffin, both of Burtonsville; a daughter- in- law, Lucille Miles, a son- in- law, Gerry Griffin, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was also the foster mother of the late Carson Ryman, grandmother of two foster grandchildren, and four foster great-grandchildren. Mary Carole Sheets Mary Carole Sheets, 67, of Burtonsville died Aug. 5, 2001, at home. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Sheets was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Washington D.C. to the late Orley B. and Frances Lane. She was a graduate of Calvin Coolidge High School, a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church, Burtonsville, and a member of the choir. She also was a member of the Burtonsville Players. Her husband, Andrew T. Sheets, preceded her in death. She is survived by her children Jennifer Sheets Hawes of Ellicott City and Russell Andrew Sheets of Laurel; a sister, . Charles H. Pogue Charles H. Pogue, 72, of Damascus died July 31 at Casey House in Rockville. Born Dec. 3, 1928 in Kentucky, he was the son of the late Rudy and Naomi Wilson Pogue. Mr. Pogue was a graduate of Tulane University where he received a master's degree. He served in the U.S. Army from Dec. 12, 1950 until Nov. 22, 1952. Mr. Pogue retired from the Food and Drug Administration as director of the States Service branch. Besides his wife, Patricia W. Pogue, he is survived by five children, Michael Pogue, Gail Perkins and Charlene Kimble of Virginia, and Richard Eisenacher and Teresa Magee of Olney; a sister, Ruth McFarland of Oklahoma; and a brother, Fred Pogue of Kentucky. Pogue is also survived by 12 grandchildren and one great- grandchild. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Muriel H. Barber funeral home in Laytonsville. Burial was at Salem Cemetery in Brookeville. Frederick A. Reyes Frederick A. Reyes of Damascus died Aug. 1 at Montgomery General Hospital from a degenerative brain disease. Reyes, a native of Detroit, served in the U.S. Army and received a business administration degree from the University of Detroit. He began his career with Western Union Telegraph Company and held many positions including director of rates and tariffs. Until 1987, he was employed at American Satellite Company and Contel ASC as assistant vice president of rates and tariffs and assistant vice president of business development. He is survived by his wife, Helen, of 37 years, his son Fred and daughter Jeanine as well as three sisters, one brother and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, father, one sister and two brothers. A Mass was held Monday at St. Paul's Church in Damascus. Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring. Thelma Larsen Hamilton Thelma Larsen Hamilton, 79, formerly of Frederick, died Saturday at the Glade Valley Nursing Home in Walkersville. She was born Aug. 2, 1922 in Washington, D.C. and was the daughter of the late Christian and Sigrid Nilsson Larsen. She was the wife of Kenneth Bingham Hamilton, who died Sept. 30, 1995. Mrs. Hamilton attended the Trinity United Methodist Church of Frederick. She is survived by five sons, Robert W. Hamilton and his wife Elena of Illinois; George C. Hamilton and his wife Phyllis of Saudi Arabia; Roger K. Hamilton and his wife Marisa of Vermont; Daniel L. Hamilton and his wife Karen of Germantown; and Kerry J. Hamilton and his wife Janet of New Market. Ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive. Burial will be in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Aug. 16. Benson Ms. Laura A. "Mickey" Benson, 73, of Gaithersburg died Aug. 2 at the Potomac Valley Nursing and Wellness Center in Rockville. Born Dec. 30, 1927, in Gaithersburg, she was the daughter of the late William S. and Nellie H. Burdette Benson. Survivors include one sister, Rebecca Benson of Silver Spring; one niece, her guardian, Mable Sizemore, of Frederick; and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilson and Gilbert Ballenger; and two sisters, Nellie Nichols and Dorothy Wynkoop. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Stevenson, 79, of Laytonsville, died Aug. 1, 2001, at his home. Born Feb. 12, 1922, in Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late William B. and Florence K. Clifford Stevenson. He was the husband of Betty J. Stevenson. Mr. Stevenson had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He had worked as an accountant for Sinclair Oil Company, the B.P. Oil Co. and then retired from N.U.S. (Energy Corp.) in Rockville. Mr. Stevenson was a charter member of the Laytonsville Lions Club. He was also active in founding the Gaithersburg Sports Association. He had also been a little league coach and was an avid tennis player who participated in the Senior Olympics. Besides his wife he is survived by four children, Thomas P. Stevenson and wife, Kim, of Virginia Beach, Va., Robert L. Stevenson and wife, Bonnie, of Mexico City, Barbara J. Sheeskin and husband, Ronnie, of Laytonsville and Sandra L. Stevenson of Laytonsville; six grandchildren, Samantha Stevenson of Virginia Beach, Roberto and Rebeca Stevenson of Mexico City, Craig and Ashley Sword and Jessica Stevenson, all of Laytonsville. Ronald Joron Mack Ronald Joron Mack of Aspen Hill died suddenly of cardiac arrest following his routine dialysis treatment on July 24. He was the husband of Virlean Hill Mack and father of Terrence J. and Marquisha M. Mack. Mr. Mack is also survived by his father, Dr. Voyce J. Mack of Washington, D.C.; three aunts, Dorothy Mack and Joyce Barnes, both of Philadelphia, and Willie Mae Mack of Ocala, Fla.; two uncles, Gilbert and Herbert, both of Ocala; and many other relatives from Florida and friends throughout the country. Wilbert I. Rice Wilbert Irving Rice, 79, of Rockville, formerly of Point Marion, Pa., died June 6 in Brownsville General Hospital. He was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Point Marion, a son of the late Irving E. and Erma L. Jennart Rice Jr. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Point Marion, a 1940 graduate of Point Marion High School and attended Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. Mr. Marion served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from the Montgomery County Police Department in 1978. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dessie Willis Rice; two daughters, Karen Seiberlich of Venice, Fla., and Rhonda Rice of Laurel; a grandson and three great-grandchildren. Herod Funeral Home in Point Marion. *****Aug. 15, 2001***** William Jack Day William Jack Day, 80, of Damascus, died Friday at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. He was the husband of Mickey Day. Born Sept. 29, 1920 in Damascus, he was a son of the late William J. Day Sr. and Sallye Jane King Day. Mr. Day was a graduate of Damascus High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He worked as a fingerprint specialist with the FBI and retired after 30 years. He was a member of Damascus American Legion Post 171, an active member of the Damascus Lions Club, VFW Post 10076, Mount Airy, Damascus United Methodist Church and the Society of FBI Alumni. Surviving besides his wife is a nephew, Mack Day of Lakeforest, Ill. and three great-nephews. Mr. Day was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Watson Day, his daughter, Lee Ellen Day, and his brother, James Kent Day. Surette, 73, a resident of Damascus for 35 years, died Aug. 8 at National Navy Medical Center in Bethesda. He was the husband of Ruby Surette. Born July 26, 1928 in Dorchester, Mass., he was a son of the late Raymond Leo and Elizabeth Hurlburt Surette. Mr. Surette served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 years. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he went to work with the U.S. Department of Defense with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the Damascus-Mount Airy Marine Corps League, where he served as adjutant paymaster. He was affiliated with numerous other Marine Corps organizations. Surviving besides his wife are seven sons, Raymond A. Surette of Abingdon, Richard J. Surette of Buckeyestown, Ronald C. Surette of Frederick, Gregory B. Surette of Sykesville, Mark G. Surette of Waldorf, Eric C. Surette of Sarasota, Fla., and Bruce D. Surette of Damascus; 12 grandchildren; one brother, James D. Surette of East Braintree, Mass.; and two sisters, Mildred R. He was a 2001 Graduate of Winston Churchill High School, and was to attend George Washington University this fall. He lived in many countries and spoke several languages. Surviving are his parents, Peter B. Lapera and Annabella Medrano Lapera; his sister, Anna E. Lapera; grandparents, Martin C. and Annelies Lapera of Walkersville, and Antonio Medrano and Maria Antonieta Zuniga of Guatemala City; and several aunts and uncles. Mary Louise McCann Mary Louise McCann, 75, a Washington-area resident since 1949, died of cancer July 17 at the Casey House hospice in Derwood. Mrs. McCann, a native of Brockton, Mass., graduated magna cum laude from Emmanuel College in 1948 and moved to Rockville in 1954 with her husband, Frederic, where they raised nine children. Mrs. McCann was a community civil rights activist appointed to the Rockville Human Relations Commission in the mid-1960s and later to the Montgomery County Human Relations Commission's Hate and Violence Committee. Her other activities included providing religious instruction at St. Mary's Parish in Rockville, teaching history at Emmanuel College and English while living abroad, and over a decade of service with the Montgomery County State's Attorney as a volunteer and staff member, where she specialized in juvenile and family law. She was an avid golfer and well-known member of Redgate Golf Course. Survivors include Frederic, her husband of 52 years; her siblings, Janet Poole of Wollaston, Mass., and Joseph Cotter of West Palm Beach, Fla.; her nine children, Charles D. McCann of Lucedale, Miss., Patrick F. McCann of Hyattsville, Bernard A. McCann of Washington, D.C., Andrew J. McCann of Rockville, Matthew J. McCann of Bethesda, Mary L. McCann of San Francisco, Rosemary McKee of Gaithersburg, Janet E. Reilly of Palm Coast, Fla., and Frederic P. McCann of Windermere, Fla.; her 13 grandchildren and one great- grandchild; and a host of friends worldwide. De Vol Funeral Home in Gaithersburg handled the arrangements. Ethel P. Shipe Ethel P. Shipe, 93, of Rockville, formally of Boyce, Va., died Aug. 4 at Hilltop House Nursing Home in Winchester, Va. She was born Jan. 5, 1908, in Millwood, Va., the daughter of the late Holmes and Orra White Hummer Cadwallader. She was the wife of the late Wilbert Wilton Shipe, who preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Shipe is also preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. She is survived by a son, Earl Shipe of Gaithersburg; two grandsons and one great-grandson. She was a homemaker and was a long-time member of Rockville Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Aug. 7 at Rockville Baptist Church. Burial took place at Forest Oak Cemetery in Gaithersburg. *****Aug. 22, 2001***** Ruth D. Berman Ruth D. Berman, 84, a native Washingtonian, died Aug. 16 at Hebrew Home of Greater Washington in Rockville. Together with her husband Clarence "Larry" Berman, she was a founding member of Ohr Kodesh Congregation of Chevy Chase. The Bermans headed the synagogue's retirees' organization for more than two decades. Until recently, Mrs. Berman was an active volunteer in several local charities. She became a volunteer for the National Capital Multiple Sclerosis Society more than 25 years ago, and she remained active in its annual fund-raising luncheon and fashion show until her recent illness. In 1993 she received the society's Bess Goodman Humanitarian Award. She was also a regular volunteer at the Kennedy Center, and a member of Hadassah, Jewish Women International, and the Women's League of Conservative Judaism. In 1992, Mr. and Mrs. Berman were the first recipients of the Jewish Council for the Aging's Jackie Unger Award for Outstanding Service. Mrs. Berman was a graduate of Central High School, the Washington School of Music, and Strayer Business College. An accomplished pianist, she was for many years a professional accompanist for several local dance schools. It was in this capacity that she was part of the White House School in 1962- 63, where one of the students was Caroline Kennedy. She performed as a volunteer for many years at Hebrew Home of Greater Washington and for other local charities. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Clarence Berman of Bethesda; two sons Stanley Berman and his wife Linda of North Potomac, and Gary Berman and his wife Beth of Durham, N.C.; one sister, Mildred Ross of Miami Beach; and two grandsons. Carolyn M. Rowles Carolyn M. Rowles, 75, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Burtonsville, died Aug. 11, 2001, in Florida. Mrs. Rowles worked as an administrative officer of personnel for the National Security Agency. She was a member of Liberty Grove United Methodist Church. She was born April 9,1926, in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Rowles graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1944. She is survived by her husband Vernon E. Rowles of Venice, Fla.; children Robert Alan Rowles of Rockville, Brenda Carol Rowles of Montgomery Village, Ronald Lee Rowles of Ranson, W.Va.; brothers, Lester Milstead of Genesse, Pa., and Wesley Milstead of Annapolis; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Rivero Maria Teresa Rivero, 37, of Germantown died Thursday at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda from Churg-Strauss syndrome and a pulmonary embolism. Born Aug. 30, 1963 in Merced, Calif., she was a daughter of Marian Camp and Mario Rivero. Ms. Rivero graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1981 and attended Montgomery College. She worked as a statistical assistant and secretary for the federal government. Her hobbies included music composition and performance, writing, poetry and textile art. Besides her parents, she is survived by one daughter, Cristina Alicia Kisonen; three sisters, Maria Elena Rivero of Frederick, Maria Alicia Rivero, of Tokyo, Maria Cristina Rivero, of Gaithersburg; and friend, Ray Algeo. Waters Hilda Scarff Waters, 91, of Damascus, formerly of Rockville, died Saturday at Lorien-Mount Airy. She was the wife of the late Bowie J. Waters. Born Feb. 6, 1910 in Adamstown, she was a daughter of the late Phillip Barton (Bart) and Mary Ogle Scarff. Mrs. Waters worked for the Supervisors of Elections Office for Montgomery County and retired in 1972. She was an associate member of Wesley Grove United Methodist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Anita Clark and her husband Bill of Damascus; three grandchildren, Rosemary Parker and her husband Keith of Rockville, Ellen Rafferty of West River, and Norris Clark and his wife Janet of Cross Junction, Va.; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Waters was preceded in death by one son, Bowie Barton "Sammy" Waters. A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Olin L. Molesworth P.A. Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. (Farley) Sampieri, 83, of Freehold, N.J. and formerly of Germantown, died Sunday at Centrastate Medical Center in Freehold, N.J. Born in Philadelphia, she was the wife of the late Spity E. Sampieri. Mrs. Sampieri was a homemaker who worked in retail sales for many years. She was also an accomplished artist who won awards for her paintings, pottery and needlepoint at various county fairs throughout the Delaware Valley and Maryland. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Rockville. Survivors include two sons, Eugene Sampieri of Freehold, N.J. and Wayne Sampieri of Germantown, Md.; one daughter, Judy Sampieri of Houston; two brothers, Eugene Farley of Riverton, N.J. and Charles Farley of Williamstown, N.J.; two sisters, Lillian Wright of Bridgeton, N.J. and Josephine Graves of Gloucester, N.J.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Colbern Betty Bennett Colbern, 76, of Damascus, formerly of Riverside, Calif., died Thursday at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda after a fall. Born Sept. 1, 1924, in Riverside, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Jewell Cassiday Bennett. Survivors include three children, Sandra Hill of Damascus, Tom Colbern of Taos, N.M. and Jim Colbern of Seattle; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Naomi Agnes Ray Naomi Agnes "Mimi" Ray, 90, of Columbia, formerly of Montgomery County, died Aug. 13 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Born Jan. 6, 1911, in Redland, she was a daughter of the late William and Virgie Belt Thompson. She was the wife of the late Thurston J. Ray. Mrs. Ray had worked for approximately 30 years for U.S. News and World Report magazine as a clerk. She was a member of Washington Grove United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. Stang Marguerite A. Stang, 85, of Mount Airy, formerly of Wheaton, died Aug. 18 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Mount Airy. Born April 20, 1916, in Baltimore, she was a daughter of the late John and Catherine Brautigan Kennard. She was the wife of the late Charles R. Stang. Mrs. Stang attended Laytonsville Elementary School and Gaithersburg High School. She retired as a secretary from McGraw Hill Publishing Co. after approximately 30 years of service. She was a life member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Wheaton VFW and the Senior Citizens of Mount Airy. She enjoyed cooking, baking, yard sales and shopping. She is survived by two children, Shirley A. Butt and husband Warner of Mount Airy and Charles R. Stang Jr. of Rockville; and five grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. Burial was at Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville. James S. Koiner James S. Koiner, 78, of Rockville died of cancer Aug. 12 at Montgomery Hospice Society's Casey House. He was married to Maxine Koiner for 55 years. Mr. Koiner was a native of Rockville and a 1941 graduate of Richard Montgomery High School. He retired in 1988 after 38 years of service with the Montgomery County Government. He was a longtime member and usher at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rockville. His hobbies included playing cards, bingo and coin collecting. He is survived by three children, Susan Whalen, Steven Koiner and Sharon Smith; three siblings, Edith Dempsey, Charles Koiner and Mary Jane Lanier; three grandchildren; and other family and friends. Born Sept. 24, 1948, in New York, she is the daughter of Ethel B. Etense of New York and the late Edward T. Etense Sr. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two children, Brian T. Jankowitz of Philadelphia and Michael S. Jankowitz of Olney; a sister, Mary Ellen Ryan of Arizona; and a brother, Edward T. Etense Jr. of Long Island, N.Y. Mrs. Etense graduated from Bay Shore High School in Long Island and Oneonta State College of New York. She was an elementary school teacher for approximately 30 years and most recently was a teacher at Cashell Elementary School in Derwood. She was of the Catholic faith and an avid reader. She enjoyed swimming, needlepoint, crocheting and Asian studies. Memorial services were held Aug. 14 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Olney. Burial was private. Born Jan. 4, 1898, in Fairfield, Neb., she was a daughter of the late John T. and Margaretha Decker Weyenberg. She was the wife of the late Ivan V. Bentz, who died in 1938. Mrs. Bentz had worked as an administrative clerk for the Central Intelligence Agency and retired in 1960. She attended Hastings Business College in Nebraska and taught in a one-room school. She and her husband also raised cattle in Montana and had lived in Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana, where he worked for oil companies. Mrs. Bentz moved to Washington, D.C., in 1941 to work for the Foreign Broadcast Information Service and later with the CIA. She liked to garden and was a member of the Potomac Chrysanthemum Society. She is survived by four children, George V. Bentz of Falls Church, Va., Warren W. Bentz of Erie, Pa., Margaret B. Johns of Rockville and Marion F.
