He was the beloved son of James W. and Bernice C. Bryant; great grandson of Edith Campbell; grandson of Ruth Clay and Bernice Campbell; brother of DeeDee McDaniel and the late James W. and Jerald W. He was 14, His death came after a nearly five-year battle against brain cancer. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Christian Life Center, 11800 Darnestown Road. The ceremony is open to all friends, classmates, teachers, hockey teammates and acquaintances. Alice B. Harding Pumphrey Alice B. Harding Pumphrey, 88, of Gaithersburg died Aug. 28, 2001, at her home. Born Feb. 23, 1913, in Boyds, she was the daughter of the late William C. and Mary Ellen Harding. She was the wife of the late George H. Pumphrey. She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Shipe, Barbara Ricketts and Mary Ann Olden, all of Gaithersburg; 16 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. One son, John W. Dodd Jr., three sisters and four brothers, preceded her in death. She was a long time member of St. Martin's Catholic Church. Kiser, 75, of Derwood, formerly of Wheaton, died Sept. 2 at Casey Hospice House in Derwood. Born Aug. 28, 1926, in Hitchins, Ken., she was a daughter of the late Leonard and Etta Waggoner Morrison. She was the wife of the late Claude A. Kiser, who died in 1994. Mrs. Kiser was a graduate of Hitchins Kentucky High School. She was a member of Redland Baptist Church and former member of the Eastern Star. Her hobbies were cooking and reading. She had retired from the Department of Transportation for the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C., where she was a financial assistant analyst for 35 years. Mrs. Kiser is survived by five children, Linda D. Tibbs of Kentucky, Robert A. Kiser of Derwood, James E. Kiser of Arizona, Donald G. Kiser of Pennsylvania and Cheryl A. He was the husband of Barbara Cashell Charles. Mr. Charles had attended Central High School in Baltimore and Drexel University in Philadelphia. He had served in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1942 to 1945 and served on the USS Iowa as a plank owner, which meant he was an original crew member. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Brookeville, Masonic Lodge 195 in Rockville, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and had helped to start the U.S. Coast Guard Flotilla in Frederick, and a former member of the Wheaton Optimist Club. Besides his wife, he is survived by four children, Richard V. Charles of Chesapeake, Va., Linda C. Tomlinson of Raleigh, N.C., Andrew J. Charles of Goldsboro, N.C., and Nancy A. Zimmerman Walter. She was the wife of the late Jesse S. Ayton Sr. Mrs. Ayton attended St. Martin's Catholic School in Gaithersburg and graduated from Gaithersburg High School. She was a homemaker. Bennett, 77, of Montgomery Village, died Sept. 2, 2001, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. He was born June 16, 1924, in Baltimore. Mr. Bennett, a 30-year resident of Montgomery Village, served on the Stedwick Homes Corporation. A retired electrical engineer, he also sold real estate locally, employed by Shannon and Luchs in Montgomery Village and Pulte Homes at Hoover Farm. Mr. Bennett attended high school at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. He earned bachelor of science and master of science degrees in engineering administration from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. A naval aviator from 1943-45 and 1951-55, he was also in the USN Reserves from 1955-69; retiring as a LCDR. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte O. Bennett and son, Randy Bennett of Montgomery Village; a daughter, Sue Caglione of Patterson, N.J.; grandson, Todd Gillespie of Kensington; grandson Jordan Bennett of Seattle, Wash.; granddaughter Jessica Bennett of Charlottesville, Va.; and two great grandsons. Dunkins Shawnte Marie Dunkins, daughter of Dion and Donna Dunkins, died Aug. 25, 2001, at Holy Cross Hospital. Dorothy Tedeschi Mazzarino Dorothy Tedeschi Mazzarino, 83, of Gaithersburg, died Aug. 28, 2001, at home. Born on Nov. 8, 1917, in New York, she was the daughter of the late Vincent and Elvira Tedeschi. Mrs. Mazzarino retired at 75 from the Gaithersburg Day Nursery where she had worked for several years, particularly with infants. Though she held other jobs in prior years, she was primarily a homemaker. Mrs. Mazzarino traveled extensively and was very talented at creating and making things, even taking up painting in her late 50s. In the immediate family, survivors include her husband Vincent of 64 years; one daughter, Patricia Carter of Damascus; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Vivian Mazzarino of Clarksville; and three grandsons, Ryan, Richard and Randall Mazzarino also of Clarksville. Born Sept. 10, 1911. in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late George L. and Orpha Haupt Miller. She was the wife of the late Clifton Kinsey Wightman to whom she had been married for 62 years. Mrs. Wightman was a graduate of Frederick High School Class of 1928 and graduated from Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1932. After several years of nursing in the Frederick area, she married and moved to Montgomery County and became a homemaker where her husband farmed for more than 40 years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg, a life member of the Damascus Travel Club, former member of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau, the Laytonsville Garden Club, the Cedar Grove Homemakers Club and former volunteer at Montgomery General Hospital gift shop. Born July 11, 1935, in Tazewell, Va., he was a son of Margaret Anderson Bailey of Fairfax, Va., and the late Issac Bailey. He was the husband of the late Barbara Sue Bailey who died in 1993. Mr. Bailey moved to Maryland in 1956. He worked as a truck driver for Southern States Petroleum Company in Gaithersburg for 30 years before retirement. Surviving besides his mother are three children, Sharon K. Bailey of Frederick, Karen S. Thurman of Mt. Airy and Robert H. Farren Edward D. "Ned" Farren, 76, of Edgewater and formerly of Montgomery County, died of heart failure Sept. 20. Mr. Farren retired in 1978 as president and chief executive officer of Seaboard Packaging Corp., A Bethesda-company founded by his late father Edward E. Farren. Mr. Farren was born April 22, 1925, in Washington, D.C., and was raised on Thornapple Street in Chevy Chase. He attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and graduated from Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va. He served in the U.S. Navy, in the Pacific Theater, during World War II. He married Ruth Small, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Lyndon Small of Bethesda. His wife died in 1963. He was a life member of American Legion Post 226 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Annapolis. He was an avid sports enthusiast who loved the outdoors. Surviving are three sons, Edward L. Farren of the Philippines, Donald B. Farren of Kensington, and Kenneth T. Farren of Hamilton, Va.; one daughter, Marianne D. Brown of Edgewater; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and devoted friends. Services were held earlier this month. Marilyn Harper King Marilyn Harper King, 74, of Silver Spring died Sept. 18, 2001, at Montgomery General Hospital, Olney. She was a homemaker and Sunday School teacher at Colesville Baptist Church, and a member of the Humane Society. She is survived by children Vernon R. King Jr. of Washington Grove, Betty A. Pearson of Columbia, J. Edward King of Mt. Airy, Arthur L. King of Springfield, Va.; a sister, Kincheloe Bernhard, of Birmingham, Ala., and 13 grandchildren. John Leland 'Jack' Acuff Jr. John Leland "Jack" Acuff Jr., 69, of Hummelstown, Pa., and formerly of Darnestown, died Sept. 17, 2001, in Homeland Center, Harrisburg, Pa. He was the president of Acuff Associates, Inc., of Gaithersburg; founded the Centennial Corporation of Gaithersburg and E.M. Spectrum, Inc., of Gaithersburg; graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and American University, Washington, D.C.; and was a member of Epworth Methodist Church, Gaithersburg. Surviving are his wife, Linda Lytle Acuff; two daughters, Susan Acuff Wolfe of Silver Spring and Karen Acuff of Miami, Fla.; one son, Michael Acuff of Silver Spring; two step daughters, Kimberly Brown of Hummelstown and Kathi Davis of Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother, Byron and Rosie Acuff of Gaithersburg; one half- sister, Donna of Knoxville, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren. Elmira B. Cooper Elmira B. Cooper, 88, of Gaithersburg, died Sept. 16, 2001, in Rockville Nursing Home, Rockville. She was born Aug. 8, 1913, in Philadelphia, Pa. She was a homemaker. She attended Ursinus College. Mrs. Cooper was involved with Cottage Hospital Auxiliary, Grosse Point, Mich., Grosse Pointe Towne Club, Questers, Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, Michigan Metro Girl Scouts, MI-Chapter English Speaking Union. Hawkins LaRue Yvonne Stevenson Hawkins, 56, died Aug. 29, 2001, at Montgomery General Hospital. She was the wife of Raymond J. Hawkins and the daughter of Louise W. and George F. Stevenson Sr. In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by one son, Jamie S. Hawkins; one daughter, Kesha Y. Hawkins; two brothers, George F. Stevenson Jr. and his wife, Deborah, and Michael Stevenson and his wife, Nancy; five sisters, Betty Thompson and her husband, Wilbert, Edna Copeland, Doris Stevenson, Cecelia Gassaway and Marie Ramey; four godchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, foster brothers and sisters, and friends. Leonard E. James Mr. Leonard E. James of Silver Spring, formerly of Gaithersburg, died Sept. 20, 2001. He was the husband of Nadine James. Surviving besides his wife are two sisters, Amanda Presley and Garnet Edith Price of Hagerstown; two brothers, Edward T. James of Gainesville, Fla., and Arbutus Langley of Hawthorne, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday at DeVol Funeral Home, Gaithersburg. MacDonald William M. MacDonald, 73, of Potomac, a University of Maryland professor emeritus of theoretical physics, died last week at Montgomery Hospice's Casey House in Rockville. He suffered from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Dr. MacDonald was born in Salem, Ohio, and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh. He earned a doctorate from Princeton University under the guidance of Eugene P. Wigner, a Nobel Prize winner. He conducted research at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, Princeton's Project Matterhorn, and the Lawrence Berkeley Radiation Laboratory. He joined the University of Maryland faculty in 1956. During sabbatical leaves he visited scientist at the Laboratoire Joliot-Curie in Paris, the United Kingdom's Atomic Energy Establishment, and the National Bureau of Standards (currently known as NIST) in Gaithersburg. In 1967, he founded the University of Maryland's Theoretical Nuclear Physics Research Group. He was an early advocate of supercomputer centers for scientific research and served on the National Science Foundation committee that led to the establishment of four national supercomputer centers. He also directed the Consortium for Upper-Level Physics Software (CUPS) Program, supported by the National Science Foundation, and co-authored a book, "The Manual for the CUPS Utilities." He was a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the Washington Philosophical Society, the Federation of American Scientists and the International Wisemen's Club. He also was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church and helped found the church's Christmas food basket program. His first marriage to Barbara Blakeley ended in divorce. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rosemary; their two sons, Colin R. MacDonald of Arlington, Va., and Ian M. MacDonald of Stanford, Calif.; four children from his first marriage, Pamela L. Heinze of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Jeffrey D. MacDonald of Brandywine, Md., Melinda L. Harnett of Woodbridge, Va., and Todd D. MacDonald of LaPlata, Md.; and one brother, Robert B. MacDonald of Seabrook, Texas.
